Daelon and I firmly believe that somehow, whatever you wanna call it, we have a family curse. It's part bad luck, part intuition, part fate messing with us.
We can never just have a relaxing day.
Or make plans that go well.
Or get our family to chill out and stop complicating everything.
Do anything without an unwelcome interruption.
We are not pessimistic, merely realistic about what will happen in life.
Thoughts? Research evidence?

Why do thing always go wrong?
Well technically, there are hundreds, of not thousands of possiblities that would make thigs go wrong. Only one set of conditions in which things go right. Mathmatically, chances are something will go wrong.

I guess maybe my thought isn't so much that we are Literally Cursed, but merely Cursed with the Knowledge that Life is Unfair and Many things go Horribly Awry.

Therefor, no matter how much things go wrong, we will survive. i know more than a few people, whom, emotionally speaking, have not survived. life has been so overwhelming as to send them into the netherworlds, a few of which i am sure i would not even want a peek into Yes, but the thing is you can overcome it, no matter how incredibly difficult it may be. It is near to miraculous the kind of things people have recovered from, emotionally and physically. Myself, I have known people like that. As well as others who you just want to hug and make all their past and their pain go away.

Well, Murphy's Law would seem to apply. If it can go wrong, it will. The 'verse does seem to have an ironic sense of humor and a penchant for bad timing. There's also the scientific principle of Synchronicity, like when you think of a song and then you hear it on the radio, or you realize you haven't seen someone in awhile and then you bump into them. Since nature works on balances, there must be an anti-Synchronicity, something that actually messes up timing and makes things out of whack.

I know the episode you're talking about. It was Chris Sarandon (of Princess Bride xd fame) who played the rival. And funnily enough, I think it was called Rivals. Just be careful, that kind of good luck is extremely addicting.

Another piece of DS9/Princess Bride trivia. Wallace Shawn, who played the smart Vizzini in Princess Bride also played the Grand Negus. In the TNG "Q" novel written by John DeLancie there's a scene where a metaphysical representation of the Grand Negus gives an eerily similar speech to that of the, "never gamble with a Sicilian when death is on the line" rant from Princess Bride. xd

 i do believe my co-workers are actually beginning to believe in Gremlins, finally. each and every night, without fail, the machinery is always fritzing. and each piece of machinery takes a turn. you'd have to be there to truly understand, hard to explain in mere words. but, the fact it happens in such an eerie fashion. so much so the coworkers who otherwise would never believe in such nonsense kind of freak out over it.

It's odd how when things go wrong, they go wrong exactly the way you wouldn't want them to. Not just a little wrong, but completely wrong. Anything that involves other people or technology, but technology especially.
