Hey guys! I have never done dance before, but next week I'm going to a three day dance camp (only two hours each day) to see what my school's dance program is all about. I was looking into trying out for my school's dance team this year. The team is for all kinds of dancing, such as hip hop, jazz, and pom. I was a cheerleader for three years, so I'm pretty flexible, and I have confidence that I might become a great dancer someday. Do you guys have any tips for team-related dancing? How could I impress the coach? What are some tips for getting ready for try outs and this camp that's coming up?

I too am on my school's dance team. Seeing as you have some experience you've got some of the requirements already. But your attitude is very important. Here are a few tips that should help, if you have any other questions feel free to ask smile One thing I love about the dance team is we get to perform for the half-time show during football season, I'm not sure it if is the same for you there, but it is, you'll have alot of fun with it. smile good luck!!

Tryouts
- smile
- don't stop dancing
- be sharp
- focus on placement
- do it full out (110%)

Other
-If you get big headed it won't help.
-When you perform use your facials
-Practice new technique to better yourself.
-Don't be afraid to ask for help
-Most of all HAVE FUN WITH IT

Just make sure to have confidence in your dancing. Even if you've never really danced before, if you have a lot of energy and you're willing to try new things, you'll stand out in the couches mind. Just don't be timid in your dancing or give up and everything will be fine.

If the routine calls for pointed toes, POINT! (and vice versa)

pay attention 2 detail
facials r oh so important
ask questions (it shows the coach that u want 2 improve)
dont give up even if u cant get it at 1st
if the coach gives u corrections apply them immediatly and dont be offended by it!
look interested when the coach is talking and dont cross ur arms or look bored

good luck!!!

Use your body to it's full potential. If you're flexible, take advantage of it. Just move your body. Dance out. Don't hold it in at all. Even if you end up doing the wrong steps, at least your coach will see that you are putting all of yourself into it, and in dance, that counts for a lot.

Radiate emotion. When the dance is supposed to be up-beat and fun and happy make it fun and happy by smiling, laughing a little bit, and making the movement as sharp as possible. When the dance is supposed to show heartbreak or turmoil or hurt or anything along those lines, show it in your face -- a lot. Don't just do nothing with your face though. Show pain. (Just don't over do it and look like an ogre.) The same thing goes for all of the other emotions dance can put out.

HAVE FUN. People can tell, and it makes them want to watch you.

Good luck, hun!

Because you have experience with cheerleading, you are set with flexibility and probably with choreography memorization and discipline to an extent, but with cheerleading you pretty much have the same personality for everything. In dance there is a passion that you don't have in cheerleading. Work on putting a lot of emotion into your dancing.

since you are part cheerleader it helps a lot with the hard turns and other dance stuff but as i was going to say just practice the route like no other and have fun.

I am a coach and choreographer my self so I hope My knowledge can help you. I personally think being a cheerleader is worse when you are making the transition into dancer, it might not be so bad since you are doing a school dance line type, but with studio you would have a much harder transition. With dance line, you can keep some of your skills from cheerleading like execution and facials. You are only going to have happy spaztic things so just whip out the vasaline and smile!! Other than that, I think everyone else covered. DEFINITELY correct youself as soon as she mkes an adjustment or comment because that is a coaches BIGGEST pet peeve. Hope I helped!! wink

well, I'm assuming that you've already had your audition, but if you want to improve then TAKE BALLET. It is the ABCs of dance, and will help you in any kind of dance you're going to do, modern, jazz, african, hula, ANYTHING.
