Well for myself I wouldn't drink or smoke, but I'm not going to judge others if they do for its has to be their conviction about it.

Yeah, if someone drinks or smokes we can tell them it's wrong but, we should'nt judge them. That is God's job, not ours.

I agree. Defiling the temple that is our GOD-GIVEN body is a sin. I quit smoking and drinking awhile ago, myself. biggrin

Congratulations Barbie!!! *hugs! Very proud of you! Not an easy thing to do. But definatly the best thing to do for you! biggrin
I think drinking and smoking are very bad for your body. I don't believe it is my place to judge others for their bad behaviors. I have my own bad behaviors that I'm working on...and wouldn't want others pointing them out to me. sad

Smoking is bad, blah blah blah. Drinking in excess is bad; though, maybe in the future at certain times, I may drink in moderation (like wine or something). Jesus drank wine, so to say drinking is completely bad is asinine.

It's a rather touchy topic. As the Director of the Drug Counsil of my country visited my university to give a conference on drugs, he explained how even non-alcoholic beverages, such as sodas, affect our health in the long-term. The Bible condemns getting drunk, but not drinking alcoholic beverages (and with this I'm not defending the consume of alcoholic drinks). Smoking is a usual cause of severe problems in the lungs.
Now, while a Christian might be "free" to do any of these things, he is not free to violate the conscience of the weak brother. Paul says in Romans 14: "Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble." In this sense, we know that if a non-believer sees a Christian drinking alcohol or smoking, he will bring a bad testimony to the body of Christ, and this will result in stumble for weak Christians inside the Church.
The damages that drinking alcohol and smoking do to our organism, should be enough to stop us from consuming them. The possibility that, if we do one or both of them, we may cause stumble to other Christians, is a further reason to stop us from consuming them. Finally, in the same chapter of Romans Paul says: "So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves."

I definitely agree about being a stumbling block. If someone is convicted about drinking, or is recovering from alcoholism, you shouldn't drink in front of them.

I am a recovered alcoholic, and I have studied the bible's words on drinking and smoking. Smoking is wrong completely, no matter what. Drinking is wrong in excess, excess being a single drink for people like me. The bible does say that we should let people become drunk if they are dying, grieving, or are facing an incredibly difficult time in their lives. (Proverbs 31)
