This is common in manga to anime transitions. They adjust or completely get rid of colors.
Two examples would be Yuki Nagato, who's hair turned from grey to purple, and Asuka Sohryu, who's hair turned from strawberry blond to dark red-brown.
Why they do this is completely lost on me.

I'm waiting for the latest episode to download so I'll get back to you once I've watched all of it. x:
EDIT: Wtf. ._o;; Four secods of Matt. I didn't really get a good look at his hair though 'cause of my computer's stupid-dark resolution. But I think he'd look better with white and black stripes rather than red and black. :/

As much as I agree with you guys on the color choices being awful, ya gotta remember that Matt's colors that we all liked were never official, just fandom-picked and generally accepted. Madhouse probably doesn't spend much time looking at fanart, and for all we know, maybe Ohba-san and Obata-san WANT his colors the way they are in the anime, and the fandom was wrong.
Also, he was there for like 5 seconds, and the scene itself is kind of dark. So maybe it'll seem better when we see him in a better shot. Like outside.
His pants don't look green, really, to me... I think that part of it is just the lighting. confused
But his hair should be some other better color than black-brown weirdness. gonk
Oh, well... I'd love Matt even if they mess him up so badly he was a rainbow-wearing Smurf...
And I think Mello would to. wink

I just assumed his hair looked darker because of the "lighting" in the scene.
