This is from a member of the band Against Nature (excellent Trad. Doom) about the value of music.

Quote:

What if music were worthless?

What if record labels were irrelevant? What if music-money were taken from corporate hands?

What if no person were to profit from someone else's music?

What if no musician were to profit from his music? What if music-money were taken out of musicians' hands, too?

What if musicians were forced to use whatever equipment, whatever means, whatever tools they could acquire on their own?

What if musicians had to craft their music on their own time, with their own money, in home-made studios, without any hope for profit?

What if music were created at home instead of in expensive studios? What if big-time studios became money-losers instead of money-makers?

What if high "studio standards" and "quality" in recording took a backseat to high standards and quality of writing?

What if, instead of "pristine," "professional," "perfect," recordings, musicians created pure, heartfelt, sincere, do-it-yourself, authentic recordings?

What if musicians released “flawed” recordings with soul instead of “perfect” recordings without heart?

What if bands were not brands?

What if bands did not care to promote themselves in hopes of a cash-in?

What if musicians had no choice but to work day jobs, jobs they despise, jobs that kill their souls...and then come home at night to write, to play, to rehearse, to record their music?

What if music were not a product like Coke or Sony but a hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind creation by artists working alone or together, lovingly, passionately, desperately, tragically?

What if no one bothered worrying whether music were marketable? What if no one created a false "need" for the "musical product," branding and marketing it to "music consumers"?

What if music were written in the vision of the heart and mind instead of the wallet?

What if music were to consume us instead of being consumed by us?

What if music were written in blood instead of on contract?

What if file-sharing programs, music blogs, and other sources of free music are bringing all this about?

Would there be more or fewer bands making excellent music?

Would the quality of music rise or fall?

What if music were free?

What, then, would be the value of music?

i think there would be a lot less bands, and a lot better quality music if that happened. although, there are plenty of bands that do produce music just for fun and not for profit which is why i love going to local concerts. 3nodding

You know(yes going back a LONG time on this one) what if questions are worthless, I do enjoy philosophy but never the kind where people just ask What If? a billion times......that guys an idiot.

Music is, was, and never will be worthless. Humans are always looking for ways to exploit and make money off anything. As long as we find music enjoyable none of those What if? questions above will ever happen. Such foul creatures we are, can never be happy with the bare minimum.

Music comes from feelings, as long as we have feelings we will express them. We will express them through writing, music, videos, just plain old actions in general.

music with soul is always good, however, i dont think the profit aspect has to be removed from music for it to be the best it can. there's nothing wrong with making profit off of stuff that has feeling and soul. but music, and every art form, needs heart for it to be good. 3nodding

I think the main point he was getting at is that with all the illegal music downloads people are doing. And that it's almost as if it's going to get to where people don't want to pay for the music anymore, and that would lead to less money in the pockets of the musicians and record companies. So with less money going into these places, the less they can make and that in turn will further reduce the record companies. And eventually there may not be the huge money being made in the music industry anymore, so only people who truly care about it will continue to make it.

yes.

of course in an ideal world, the only people making music would be the ones who care about it anyway

This hits the nail on the head for me and this is what I listen for when I listen to any kind of music.

Yeah, and John (I'm pretty sure this is his writing) really lives up to what he says here.

DOWN WITH BUYING MUSIC! LMAO. (Not that I ever bought one).

Dude

All these statements are true here.

The last question should be something like 'What if the listeners had enough creativity as the creators to visualise the music as if it was as perfect as it would have been in the music studio'.
