So, i was listening to "Teo Torriate" (one of my personal favourites) for the umpteenth time and realized that i still can't understand the Japanese! (OK, maybe it is beyond first-year level.) But it got me to thinking- generally, when a band starts singing in some untelligible language, people don't listen to the song. Yet Queen had Teo and "Mustapha" and sort of "Palabras de Amor." What do people think about these?

What about when he sings with Montserrat? Does that count? There's alot of that with her, for example...

I think the Operatic stuff with Montserrat was okay for another language. I really like Las Palabras de Amor, and Teo Torriate. I never liked Mustapha, just because, well, the song gets on my nerves. But, the other language stuff doesn't bother me at all.

I don't think language matters. So as long as the song's enjoyable that's all that really matters. After all, you might be able to pick up a word or two wink

Numa Numa... i think they say "Quiche is sexy" at least once in that song... sadly, i've never heard any of Freddie and Monserrat. i've wanted to, though. i'm going to steal that statement about Mustapha, as well. It's so cute, though... my little sister thinks that that song's about Mufasa, from the Lion King.

I approve of this statement and take it as my own. xd Personally I adore Mustapha, probably because of the odd middle-east obsession I have going on, but when it comes to foreign language in music, I think that the whole song should be sung in one language. That way, with songs like Las Palabras, it doesn't just sound like they put a phrase or two in some online translator and sung it because it fit the song...which isn't really a bad thing because tons of non-queen songs do that as well, and it works. It's just something that bothers me a bit.

I don't like Las Palabras very much... maybe because i'm so sick of Spanish, but i agree mostly with that... however, Teo Torriate is not sung entirely in Japanese, and it (in my humble opinion) is one of Queen's most beautiful and touching songs. And it sounds amazing, too!

Well, keep in mind a lot of Asian songs tend to have a dabble of English in their songs, so I suppose it's interesting to see some English songs having some foreign languages in them as well whee
Personally, I don't mind, so as long as I can enjoy it heart

Teo Torriate makes me angry for the sole reason that it is so gorgeous, and I can't sing it with all my heart while driving down the street, because I have no idea what is being said. eek

Can anybody say yay for Japanese dictionaries and knowing people who speak it better than you?
Teo orriate konoma ma iko: to go hold hands as things are
(Teo are hands, torriate is a form of the verb to hold, konomama means as things are, and iko means to go.)
Aisuruhito yo: my dear loved one
(Aisuruhito means a loved one, yo is the address for a loved one.)
Shizukana yoi ni: in the silent night
(Shizukana means silent, yoi is a poetic word for night or dusk, and ni is a particle meaning during, at, or in.)
Hikario tomoshi: Light the lamp with fire
(A hikario is a lamp, and tomoshi is a very poetic word meaning to light a fire.)
Itoshiki oshieo idaki: Keep the lovely instructions handed down from God
(Itoshiki means lovely, oshieo is a very religious word meaing instructions, and idaki means to keep.)
Or, in other words...

I don't think language matters. Although, I did take my recording of Mustapha to my social studies teacher for deciphering, since he knows about a million languages. Sadly, he didn't know the language that Mustapha was sung in...
