Alot of people in today's society, use names they believe to be the Egyptian names of the Gods and Goddesses, but they are actually Greek names. Archeologists use primarilly the Greek names due to some Egyptian names being hard to pronounce, and since because they have been used for so long, they would have to reread everything they originally translated. Here, I'll list the Greek names and translate it into Egyptian via several sources (kemet.org, The Ancient Egyptian Prayerbook among them.)

I must say though, I have two Kemetic friends... not Orthodox Kemetic, but Kemetic nonetheless. They also use Egyptian names over Greek names, but I've noticed a little bit of variation.

For example, you call Anubis Yinepu. She calls him Anpu. She calls Osiris, Asar. Are these regional varioations, or is it spelled one way but pronounced differently?

Also, perhaps modern society uses some Greek names for some deities and some Egyptian names for others, because I've always used Ra, Sekhmet and Set over the Greek version, which I didn't learn until reading this thread.

In part, I'd venture to say (tho I'm not expert by any means) that its because ancient Egyptian was largely unknown by (western) scholars for so long. Too, later (roughly 3rd century C and for about 900 years following) Egyptian used Coptic which was largely based on the Greek alphabet. The reasons for this are a little varied, but ultimately Coptic became the national language until Arabic was instituted in the 11-1200s.

There are such cases. I've seen these variations mostly in Wiccan groups, and they are not wrong is calling Yinepu 'Anpu' or Wesir 'Asar'. One theory is that Anpu is a combination of 'An'ubis and Yine'pu', though origin-wise I need to do some research on. Asar is also used a bit as well, though that name holds two meanings: Aside from being another name to call to Wesir, it also is egyptian for the word 'tree'. This connection was more than likely made in conjunction with the murder and ressurection myth, as Aset had to leave Egypt and found Wesir's coffin in a tree or part of a tree.
As for posting it in politial, I read it to be Religion and Polotics, relating to both topics. It has nothing to do with polotics but very much to do with religion. ^.^

I watched some History Channel show today, and they didn't even call Ra by his Egyptian name.......It was kinda sad. I thought they would at least be trying to use more accurate names now... confused

Just wondering, are these the same Gods? Did the Anicent Greeks come to Anicent Eygpt or what? It is just very interesting on how there is a whole list of conversions. I noticed this yesterday too when reading something in another guild.

The Greeks did frequent to Egypt. At one point they were allies as Egypt offered gold in order to gain the Greek's naval aid when they attacked thier enemies (I can't remember right now who they were fighting at the time, but it happened after Egypt was freed from the rule of an outside country and they were at that time, not only atacking thier enemies, but also allies of those outsiders. it was also around that time that chariots began to be used by the ancient Egyptian people). The Greeks wrote about the Egyptian Gods long before the final conquest of Egypt in which the Greeks then 'melded' the Egyptian pantheon with thier own Gods
