This is one topic that many religions have vastly different views upon. Some believe in reincarnation, some don't, and some believe reincarnation only occurs under certain circumstances, criteria one needs to meet or fall short of. So what's your opinion on it?

My beliefs on reincarnation are vast. I'll try to cover the basics, and if anyone's interested, I'll explain in more detail.

  • People are reborn into a new body after they die.
  • People can stick around in the spirit world for as long as they want between lives.
  • EVERYONE has a past life. There's more people in the world today than ever before. How do we have souls to fill all these bodies? One soul can split into two to fill two vessels. That's how we get "soulmates."
  • Enlightenment is required to leave the cycle of death/rebirth.
  • There are more than one levels of enlightenment.
  • The highest levels of enlightenment cannot be achieved while in a physical body.
  • After attaining higher levels of enlightenment, a person can "connect" themselves to an archetype, and in turn take the form of an angel, god, or other celestial being and spirits to communicate with living people.
  • These gods or spirits can reincarnate in a physical body, called an avatar and live a lifetime as a mortal being. Previous examples include Jesus, Krishna, Mithras, and many others.

That's the jist of it. I'll add more if I remember more.

My faith falls along simillar lines. I believe that we do what we can to reach enlightenment here on earth through living in Ma'at and focusing on purity and order. After our mortal bodies are dead, Yinepu and nebt-het guides us to the Hall of Two Truths (Two or Double of anything in Kemet means more extreame or more serious, just as if one were to use the modern words extra or advanced) and do what are known as the 42 Negative Confessions, where one professes that they have upheld the 42 tenets of Ma'at ad calls each angel and demon by thier true names as they do so. This is to purge away any remaining darkness remaining in the ka and ba, unclouding them from conventional sin, but not of any isfet (isfet is the kemetic word for gravely unforgivable sin, such as child molestation) Then, Yinepu takes one's ka and weighs it agianst the feather of Ma'at. If the ka is enlightened and sinless (meaning all sins have been forgiven and forgotten in life and through the 42 confessions), then the ba and ka may enter into the Kingdom of Duat. If the ka is heavier, then it is devoured by Ammit and the ba is sent to be reincarnated and a new ka is made for that ba (our ba is where our memories of our past lives are stored as it is truely eternal). In either case, Djehuty records the results and Wesir pronounces judgement. The ka that passes is brought to Wesir by His Son Heru, accompanied by Aset and Nebt-het and the ba and ka recieve the title of wesir (in modern times, refering to one as 'the wesir (name)' is the same as saying 'the late (name)'. That ba and ka are now an Akh, or 'shining one' Our double-soul (which those of us who do astral projection use this double-soul for such things) remains in this world to help our decendants and any who call upon us for help.

I don't really have a religion but I do believe in reincarnation.

I've inherently believed in reincarnation ever since I was really little, though I was never taught it since I was brought up secularly. I have yet to decide if I believe in the transmigration of souls, though.

I'm not really sure. I would like to believe that there is such a thing as reincarnation, but it doesn't seem very realistic to me. How strong is a soul that it can keep moving from body to body for millions of years? And if this cycle exists, is there no escape from it, such as Brahman or Nirvana? When I die, I don't know if reincarnation would be a very comforting thought. When you die, life has worn you out. Would it be more comforting to think that the soul just vanishes?

@Murder: That sounds a lot like Hinduism. The part about a soul splitting itself into two is an interesting idea, and I think it makes sense. What faith are you, excactly?

My belief is referred to as Hermeticism. Most people have never heard of it, but basically, it is a combination of the deepest doctrines from many different religions. I wrote a fairly lengthy thread about it once:

By the way, the soul splitting idea is my own personal theory. As far as I know, no one has developed that belief to the point that I have before. At least that I know of, anyway.

I believe in reincarnation because I also believe in karma and the 3 fold law. All which apply to eventually getting what you deserve. Whether it be in this life or the next. I do not believe in heaven or hell but I do believe in an "in between" since I don't think you are "automatically" reborn. But I believe every life you live is a reflection of the one before it in one way, shape, or form.

Um, so I guess the people that are asexual have their soul in one piece?

I more or less believe in it, I recognise the possibility of reincarnation(very similar to the way Murder does) more than the possibility of nothing happening or a temporary afterlife.

I base my beliefs largely on esp experiences I've had and Newton's laws of conservation.

If you're referring to my theory on soul splitting, no, that's not quite how it works... The way I believe, the soul itself is androgynous, or rather, hermaphroditic, being both male and female. I know of at least one split in my previous lives, and before that split, both me and the person who you could call the other half of me lived as both a male and a female in previous lives.

For the sake of saying something, but being too tired to think about it at the moment, I'm just going to say that reincarnation is a large part of my spiritual belief.

This leads me to this question, how durable is a soul? For recarnation to work and a soul to survive a split, they must be tough little suckers.

For my beliefs, I believe in science. So thus, I'll apply it here to recarnation. If everything has to be conserved from energy to matter, souls would have to, wouldn't they? To follow Newton's laws, they would. That doesn't mean the soul couldn't break or rip apart, the parts just can't disappear.

Then what makes up a soul? To break down, something must be made out of pieces. Anyone have any idea what a soul is made of?

Reincarnation would be awesome... though I have a lack of belief in it.
