Right now I'm going to abuse my power as captain of this guild and beg all the members of this guild to participate in a petition to save the wolves in Northern Rockies.

I'm tired of looking around at all these ignorant people and seeing them go unpunished, or even ignored. There are and always will be ignorant people like the Idaho Governor, but... I hope there will also always be competent people with enough intelligence to know that this is an injustice.

If you wish to not sign this for a moral reason think of it from a logical standpoint. We have a deer, buffalo, and etc. wild game over-population and instead of the wolves being able to naturally pick off the small and weak parts of the packs of those animals, or being able to kill some of them to keep a balance, we send humans out in the woods with rifles to randomly hunt and kill these animals. We have been upsetting a delicate balance in nature, now we need to tip the scales to try and set that balance straight again before it's too late.

I may sound pathetic for being interested in the safety of this world, and all for ethical treatment of animals, but, the most pathetic thing is that the majority of people aren't. I'm flat out sick of this. I've done as much as I can and I'll continue that much, now I'm begging you to do the same.

Idaho Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter said that once the wolves are de-listed, his state would kill all but 100 of the wolves, making the decades-long efforts to strengthen wolf populations in vain.

I'm also going to stop production of the MPRILC website in order to try and make a website that lists organizations that are out to help nature and once I'm done uploading it, it will be linked to from the mprilc links page.
This website will include vegan recipes and ways to contribute to helping not only animals, but the ecosystem and everything.

Thank you for your time.

Yay, vegan recipes! *ahem* Anyway, good idea promoting this Lobo! As soon as I get done posting this, I'll sign. I agree with everything you said, and I think I'd like to add something also. For some reason, people think that pigs and cows and animals that humans eat are the only things killed. Well, they aren't. Why do think animals go into extinction? Ok, my arnt is done. 3nodding

Not a Vegan, but Idaho peeves me off enormously. There is plenty of game for humans and predators alike. There will never be enough game for all the humans who want to hunt every single year, and no hunter ACTUALLY wants sick, weak herds to hunt from. Humans prefer to select healthy animals to hunt, and without predators to keep the herds in shape, they will be out of luck.

Promote education and intelligence--predators help hunters, too. No one loses when you protect predators.
There are many ways to protect livestock from predation without killing predators...in fact, those ways all work tremendously better. (Look up 'predator-friendly ranching'). Animals are individuals, and many populations of predators have culture. This means you can train the animals in the area to leave livestock alone, and they will pass on the aversion to their offspring. It works.
There's an increasing push toward educating landowners on how they can actually make MORE money from their land by protecting wildlife and wildlife habitat.
Ranching, private land ownership, and hunting do not have to be at odds with conservation, and SHOULD not be, if it is to be successful. I disapprove of groups like PETA, ALF, and other organizations which promote an "all or nothing" attitude toward conservation and animal rights, and promote the myth that human use and wildlife use are mutually exclusive. There are good reasons to protect trackless wilderness, but it's a tremendous mistake to consider habitat already occupied by humans to be 'lost'.
By presenting the issue as 'all or nothing' and being so loud, people actually BELIEVE it is all or nothing--and they choose nothing. Those groups need to shut up and sit down so that some compromises can be achieved, and the public can be educated on how they CAN have their cake, and eat it too.
Hunting can benefit predators...how many people do you think know THAT?
(Why? Because sometimes prey animal populations boom. In a natural cycle, the population boom overwhelms the predator population--they reproduce more and their population rises, but much more slowly. In the meantime, the high prey animal population devastates the vegetation. The predator population catches up, winter hits, vast numbers of prey animals starve...leaving the overinflated predator population with prey in a 'bust' cycle...and thus the predators starve. In some cases, the predator 'bust' following such a cycle is so severe that the species can become locally extinct. This is natural...but in today's world, with habitat so severely reduced, the impact cannot always be absorbed--by allowing increased human hunting of prey species that are overpopulating, the predator population does not rise as high, the vegetation is not devastated, and both species make it through the winter intact).

If you want to save predators, you have to convince the people who want them gone that predators are GOOD FOR THEIR INTERESTS. What you have going for you, on your side, is that it is completely true.

All the old myths have to be torn down. Wolves are good for hunters. Prairie dogs are good for ranchers. Ranchers can be good for wildlife. Hunters can be good for predators...you see how much damage the all or nothing approach can do?

The point of this rant? Just to try to get a few more people who really do care to see the real solutions, and perhaps spread the word from there.

I totally support the saving-of-the-wolves, but like Winged-sensei I won't support PETA. So, yay wolves, boo PETA from me.

Actually, most of my family hates PETA, but they just scare they crud out of me. Mostly because I want to go hunting sometime, but I'm terrified that there might be some nature-nerd walking around with antlers on his head so that someone shoots him and badness ensuses. Oh yes, I really do fear these people. surprised

What's that Native American proverb? Something like "Only when the last tree has been cut down, the last river poisoned, and the last fish caught, will we realize that we cannot eat money."

I think that applies all too well.

Wolves shouldn't be persecuted for behaving naturally. Any threat that wolves pose to humans is because they are adapting to human encroachment on their environment. I hope we as a species can correct our mistakes before it's too late.

First let me say wolves are my favorite animal. That said...

Going with the biological/cyclical argument, wouldn't it be better for wolves to kill them?

Then the number of prey would rise, the remaining wolves "boom," and then the cycle ensues. And then, by killing prey, we help nature "deflate" the predator population.

The only reason we don't eat wolves is our aversion to dog meat. No one wants to eat rover... or his annoying cousin.

I'm fairly sure I signed this quite some time ago. I love wolves... wish I was a werewolf, actually. XD But since that's probably not happening in the near future, wolves==awesome. So I'll check. I'm not a fan of PETA myself, but something's better than nothing.

For one thing, the petition is not on PETA it is on thepetitionsite...
Second: Why the hell does everyone hate PETA?...

Some people mistake PETA for ALF. ALF people are the people who go around and dump blood on fur coats and act semi-crazy for animal rights. PETA, on the other hand, mostly promotes not hurting animals and being vegan, and avoiding, at all costs, the harming or mistreatment of any animal. Every individual member of PETA has their own ideas on what should be done, so blame them, not Newkirk.
Thank you.

...but PETA was caught in the act of mass-euthanasia when they could not find proper shelter for animals they'd "helped."

From all that I read, they do euthanize pets, because this is the real world and not all of the animals can be saved, but its better than a life of hell. And the mass euthanasia was from incompetant peta volunteers or employees and they were banned from PETA... that's what I've read.

I appreciate the clarification then... I would rather they were persecuted as well, but that would be on loose ground at best...

Thank you.

As someone in ED witfully said: "PETA is to animal rights movement as the Soviet Union is to Communism."
