No, I like the original concept where he doesn't control the TARDIS better. |

Am I the only one who hates the idea that the Doctor now has total control over the TARDIS? Seems to me that was the greatest thing about it. Also, it was the reason he was able to keep his companions because he was never able to return them to the same place and time where they came from. Now that he can it's a wonder they stay with him. Though, I must admit if you're able to see other planets and times that would make your reality a little bit mundane.
What do you think? Should the Doctor have control over the TARDIS or not? And why?

No, you're right. it was fun when the Doctor would declare they were going one place & he'd end up dumped in the middle of big trouble instead...I think he tried to take Sarah Jane to a beach planet once because they came out & SJ was all dressed for the beach, but it was Antarctica! She didn't appreciate that. lol Mind you, I think a lot of the messes he'd find himself in were because the Time Lords were redirecting his TARDIS towards them. He actively accused them of it (yelling at thin air) once or twice.

Although I'd opt for a bit of both, actually...where he can't always control it, but just give it a semblance that he can..plus now that the Time Lords are gone, there's nobody to really mess with the controls. Other than that transmat thing and the Sycorax teleporting it...but that's just to a certain destination, not some random planet...

I liked where the TARDIS wasn't quite all there (in other words, not fixed) and he couldn't know where they were going (though he'd try for certain places and would think for a while that they'd landed where they were supposed to be).
And I love when Four and Sarah Jane were ready for the beach and landed in Antarctica, too!! And of all the times Three wanted to go to Metabelis 3, he only got there in two stories!

I don't know why he kept wantig to go there. He didn't enjoy himself either trip... It was better when he couldn't control the TARDIS, a lot more random, and it took away from that godcomplex the Doctor seems to be developing...

I want it to be random, mostly to prevent companions just being able to pop home any time they feel like it!
There should be some sacrifice involved when you get to travel all over space and time with a handsome young Timelord.

Since I've only ever really seen the new series, it seems to me like he doesn't control it entirely. Well, actually... I dunno. But the first time he tried to bring Rose home he totally messed up. And in "Tooth and Claw" and "The Idiot's Lantern" it goes to the wrong place and time. But it does seem like it has this remarkable ability to do exactly what he wants it to do when it's really important! He can make it go back in time five minutes so Rose can try to save her father again, or he can get it to go to London on Christmas Eve in 2005, and then it suddenly decides at random that it's been letting him get complacent and starts giving him a hard time.

I think I prefer it when it's random.. Does anyone remember the Doctor saying the TARDIS doesn't do short distances? In the newer episodes...he can make it do whatever he wants..that can get a little frustrating..

Hmm, I think he should have some control, but the TARDIS (as usual) should be incredibly unpredictable and random, so that more than 50% of the time or whatever it doesn't do what he wants it to. But yeah, he does kinda need some control, I think.

But yeah, he does kinda need some control, I think. He needs some control over it, or else it would get completely annoying after a while. And I agree about the short distances thing. I'd make an exception for 'Father's Day', just because that had to be one of my two favorite Nine episodes, and completely amazing.

What annoys me is that he spends ninety-nine percent of the time on Earth, and yes, satellites count. He's had, what, two episodes when the TARDIS brings him to an alien planet?
And of course it's always Cardiff, unless it's Christmastime and then he can be in London. Because as we know bad stuff happens in London during Christmas.

Other than 'Impossible Planet/Satan Pit' two-parter with Ten, it's either been Cardiff, Wales, a satellite orbiting the Earth, or London. During Christmas. xp Even the really well done 'Empty Child' two-parter was done on Earth, just during WWII. Although, the 'Cybermen' two-parter was an alternate universe, albeit being one of Earth. And you notice also there's been tons of 2-parters? The two on Satellite 5 linked up, the 2-parter season enders (of course they're worth it), 'Impossible Planet/Satan Pit', not to mention the two mentioned last paragraph and then some. I want at least a three parter, with a really good plot and good character strengths. I mean, they've got the time to do it with Ten now, he's staying on the entire fourth season.

Every once in a while the TARDIS needs a good thump, or else what's the point?
And about the not going to alien planets thing. C'mon, you gotta be nice. They're doing the best they can with the budget they have. We can have some interesting adventures on earth and just IMAGINE the crazy other planets they visit, or we can have a dissappointing other planet because the special effects couldn't manage it.
