I have heard the debate about whether or not instruments should be alowed to accompany prayers and songs in Temple. I like the idea and actually went to an African drumming seminar at the last NFTY Convention I attended. However, I have heard that some Temples do not allow any instruments to be played during Services. What do you think about instrumental accompaniment in Temple?

*shrugs*
My rabbi plays the tambourine, cantor plays the guitar, and we have some Jammin Jews that play the drums and some string instrument. Maybe its another guitar.

Goes along quite nicely with the prayers, I must say.

umm...I didn't see anything wrong with it offhand, but hopefully there's nothing religiously against it? As long as it doesn't take away from the prayers or is a totally strange instrument like an electric guitar or something, I thought it was okay. sweatdrop

My cantor sings and plays a guitar, we have a choir, some people occasionally play the drums or tambourine, there's a really talented violinist, etc. Rick Recht is from our Temple, so he often does something cool.

I think it can really add to some of the prayers and really gets some of the younger kids or teenagers into it more. Just my opinion, though. sweatdrop

It's known that the levi'im would play with instruments at the entrance of the Temple while singing "Shir shel Yom"... The only problem with playing instruments during service is that it reminds of me of the Christians slightly (Organ)...

I think that if it's done right, it can be truly wonderful blaugh .

Sometimes playing instruments leads to lightheaded-ness, so people need to be careful... That may be why it's not widely accepted.

There's nothing halachic to prohibit playing an instrument. However, the gaonim (sages) put a fence around the Torah, as the saying goes, because if one plays an instrument, one might break it or put it out of tune, and mending it is prohibited. So now, we're not supposed to use instruments, until the Holy Temple is rebuilt. I think it's a shame, though, because by the time the Temple is rebuilt, we'll have forgotten how to play liturgical music appropriately.

However, there's a wonderful saying somewhere in Talmud -- a scholar, please help me with the citation? -- that anyone who sings or plays during religious services at the Temple or a synagogue shall be considered a Levite. As a professional vocal musician, this makes me smile.

I don't know if everybody is talking about weekday services.
You are not allowed to play instruments on Shabbos! You are not allowed to make music on Shabbos. Personally, when I see organs in one of those conservative or reform temples it makes me sick! The Christians use organs in churches!!!

I think its ok, my temple is very opened minded so no one seems to mind singing/ bring anything to tap to. Usually it is after prayer though. n_n'
After Shabbos we usually do music oriented song and dance.

DEFINITELY not during shabbos.
and we have music during melavah malkas, which is good enough for me.

i don't know, it might make someone lose their concentration while davening.

Thing is, and I don't think anyone else said this, but should music be played in "temple". To me, using the word Temple means Reform. For Conservative and Orthodox, there was only one Temple.

Quite right. And the Tanakh and Talmud both indicate that music was, and should be, played in the Temple. However, in synagogue, it is not permitted on Shabbat or Yom Tov, because if the instrument should break, one would be tempted to fix it.

i heard that they played harp in the ancient temple, which is why we sing when we pray, something like that. Phhh lighthead-ness, music is what hits the soul, i would definatly start going to synagogue if they hade a band playing, i would so jam in there with crazy guitar solos...... then be banned for life.

hmp why should we deprive ourselves of a little music while we pray?!
I think some music can help to be spiritual and, even a little fun for someone young and easliy bored...
But I agree and don't like the organ that much (reminds me of the Phantom of the opera too), how about a simple piano?
