Something that I find interesting, but is not really embraced in many churches are spiritual gifts. The church I go to encourages people to really seek the Holy Spirit which resulted in the fact that many people in my church have the gift of tongues. In the bible, when it mentions the gift of tongues, it also mentions that in a church there should be an interpretor so that the church may be blessed and encouraged by what is said so just a few months back, a woman discovered she had the gift of interpreting. ^-^ A gift that really stands out to me is a gift that a man in my church has where he can physically see angels and demons which is truly amazing.
So. I'm wondering, does anyone else have a spiritual gift? Does your church encourage this? What are you views on spiritual gifts? Do you know anyone or kind of vaguely know anyone who has a gift/gifts?

I personally hold the belief that the spiritual gifts are available to everyone, and that everyone has them. In fact, I have a slight suspicion that a good friend of mine (non-Christian) has prophetic tendancies...now if I can just get her saved...lol.
Being a pentecostal, the spiritual gifts are central to our doctrine. I also think that the gift of tongues (the one that requires interpretation) and the baptism of Holy Spirit with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues, are two different things.
I've seen a lot of the gifts...and it blows me away every time. Our district youth director works a lot in the gift of knowledge...it's insane. I've also seen healing at work. Prophecy is a huge one for me, simply because I have prophetic tendancies, as do a lot of people in my family. I've met a lot of people who move very strongly in the prophetic...and it's crazy. There's no other word for it.

Well, I think that my gifts are tongues, serving, and exhortation. To be honest, I rarely speak in tongues because I don't see how it helps me or others spiritually. The others I do see how it helps, so I use those more often.

I wouldn't know if I got a gift from god, or not. I just really haven't noticed yet.

Everyone has at least one spiritual gift, whether they realize it or not. Personally, I have the gifts of wisdom, discernment, and evangelism.

Everyone needs to understand something... GOD HAS PLANTED GIFTS IN ALL OF US It's just a matter of us opening up to them, and discovering them and growing in them. We're all just baby christians, we don't know a whole lot about our gifts. But one thing i know is that we have all of the gifts to some degree. Some, we are more skilled with than others. Some people are only meant to use one or two main gifts to lift up the church. I have the gift of faith, pastoring/teaching, discernment and a little bit of prophet mixed in. 3nodding

growing up, I was never taught the idea of spiritual gifts, but now that we've changed churches, I know they exist.
I had the gift of evangilism, but I believe God took that away. I think I've always had the gift of praise, and now, in place of evangilism (ok, am I spelling that right??) I have the gift of prophecy, which my dad had, but didn't believe in.

I forgot what my last spiritual gifts test said, but I do remember that I have discernment. Those of you who said that they don't have one; you do. Try taking a spiritual gifts test ^^

Everyone has gifts, talents and spiritual gifts. But we are not to put an importance of one gift over others. Unfortunately we tend to do that with"Tongues." There is no Scriptural basis for that, since healing and beaing able to get bit by poisonous snakes and not die were also gifts that the Apostles had, that aren't around today. I am not saying "Tongues" doesn't exist. I am saying too many people put too much emphasis on it, when God speaks to us through His Word, through His Church and through prayer.

I have to disagree with the whole 'these things aren't around today'. Who says? No where in the Bible does it say 'but these things were only for the early Church'. I don't really understand why people think that. Healing is very much around today. And the whole being bit by posionous snakes...that is also a figurative illustration as well. Not all snakes and poison are literal.
We are not supposed to put emphasis on some gifts over others, for all have equal importance. But some people might move in healing, where others have knowledge or prophecy. The point there was not to favour the prophetic person over the healer; they are both equally important. But not everyone has all the gifts in every way (everyone can prophesy, but not everyone's a prophet type thing).
The gift of tongues and speaking in tongues as the initial evidence of the baptism if the Holy Spirit are two different things, something that many people get confused about. The initial evidence is ready and available to everyone, and is not one of the gifts listed among the others. It is a tool, and emphasis is put on it because it is something that is so readily available. God does speak through other means...I have no idea what I'm saying while praying in tongues, which would indicate that it's not something God uses to speak to us individually. It is a sign that a believer is Spirit-filled, and therefore empowered to do God's work. It's a took for prayer, and it takes us to a deeper level with God, as our spirit communicates with His in ways we cannot understand.
