There is a lot of controversy around the subject of swearing. I myself am pro-swearing, because in my opinion:

IT SHOULDN'T MATTER WHAT WORDS YOU USE, BUT RATHER THE MESSAGE YOU ARE TRYING TO SEND.

For example.

Message One:
You are so utterly grotesque that I do believe I am about to throw up.
Message Two:
Oh wow, that shirt looks ******** amazing on you!

Which one is mean? Can you guess?
THE ONE WITHOUT SWEARING.

Funny that.

But it's not just swearing itself that's become contraversial. People swear automatically when they stub their toe, break their pen, drop their food. At home, sure, swear out your frustrations! But at school we have to make replacements. "Fugging". "Freaking". "Bugger".

But apparently, these words we are using to replace swearwords so we don't upset those who are sensitive to such things are now considered swear words themselves.

Which really pisses me off. How many years is it going to be before we aren't allowed to say something completely innocent instead of a swearword because there are those out there who consider it still swearing?

Discuss:
-Anti or pro swearing.
-Replacement swearwords.

Eh, ******** it. I still swear in school, so that doesn't do me much harm.

I don't like swearing simply because I think it's crude and it makes you sound ignorant. People who swear are people who don't have the vocabulary to express their feelings in other ways. Take your example.

Quote:
Oh wow, that shirt looks ******** amazing on you!

What does that really mean?

Quote:
Oh wow, that shirt looks sexing amazing on you!

That's the literal translation. To go around saying ******** all the time is just to go around saying a crude and rude form of the word sex. Mature. Very mature. It makes you sound rude, immature, and ignorant. A better thing to say is,

Quote:
Oh wow, that shirt looks really amazing on you!

"Really" is not a hard word but it completely changes the sentence. It makes it more polite (and contrary to popular belief I feel that you do need to be polite to your friends; in fact I feel that they're the ones you need to be the most polite, not formal, to because they're the ones you respect most) and doesn't make you sound stupid. You don't have to use a bunch of really long words like in your other example. However cursing will only make you sound stupid. I know many disagree with me on this issue, but when I hear kids my age saying the word "********" or "damn" every other sentence, I just think that they sound like fools who have no idea what they're talking about.

I resent that! I have a rather large vocabulary, I'd just prefer not to confuse people, so I speak on their level.

As I said, you don't have to use big words not to swear. You don't have to go out of your way to have a large vocabulary not to have to use swear words to express yourself. It's not hard. Again, see my examples. I simply substituted "********" for "really". Really is hardly an advanced word. Most people who are above the first grade know it. Again, you don't have to use huge words not to swear.

To be honest, I really couldn't care if someone is strongly against or supporting swearing, just as, like religion, they don't attempt to force these views on me.

I like to swear, because it better helps to express my meaning. To say that just because I swear, I can't come up with some more socially acceptable way to do the same thing is a lie, and frankly offensive. I can express myself with a huge variety of other words, simpler or more elaborate. However, a "swear" word is just a word. A number of letters arranged to make a sound that usually makes sense. To be offended by sounds is ridiculous.

But of course, that's just my view.

I'm not trying to force by views on you. I'm simply explaining mine. I feel that it makes you sound ignorant and that there are other words that you can use to express yourself in the same way. You feel differentially. I respect your opinion and your right to curse even if don't agree with it. As they say, "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." At least I think that's how that saying goes...

Oh, I wasn't saying you were. I can't dream of someone like you doing something like that, Hydra.

I just wanted to add that.

:3

But yes, I think the main thing isn't about people having the same opinion on the matter, but respecting those of others. I try not to swear too strongly (It's just so natural, it's impossible to not swear at all) around those who don't like it, but I don't like the idea of people restricting my words.

That's a good quote.
I'll have to use it sometime.

Aw. Thank you. heart

I think that you're completely right in that mannor. I may not like cursing, but I won't stop someone from doing it. It's they're right. The freedom of speech is very importaint to me and that's part of it.

It is a good quote. I don't know who said it origionally, but I really love it.

I do not do it unless I'm very irate. I use it just for emphasis and only rarely. I use other substitutes instead most of the time.

That is my opinion, so don't take offense.

No offense taken, of course. ^^ I swear occasionally when I'm very angry. I've found that swearing has a lot more effect when you don't do it very often.

It's actually more effective if you don't do it all the time. I agree with you on that point.

But if you do, tone of voice determines it's effectiveness. Me, for example. If I'm laughing and say "I'm gonna ******** kill you." I probably don't really care. However, if I say the same thing through clenched teeth, lingering on every word, running is recomended.

Yeah, but if you only say it "through clenched teeth, lingering on every word" then it's even more effective. It adds extra emphasis where as if you use it all the time it really doesn't. It's just the way you're saying it, not what you're actually saying.
