“Long ago, before the Great Cataclysm, this world was vibrant and green, or so the Shamans say. But then, through a series of devastating events, that vibrant world was completely and utterly destroyed. There are no texts, or accounts left to chronicle the end of the ancient world...Save one...The Mariners Log, our holy book. Another thing that the Mariners Log states, is that there is an island somewhere, where that paradise still remains, this island has become known as, ‘The Promised Land’. However, the monstrous species known as the Zigmaril, keep us humans from discovering this island by patrolling the seas. But hope remains that one day, the island will be found and the human race will finally live in peace...Psst! Yeah right! Like anyone would ever believe that old fairy tale!”

There’s a loud banging on a pretty crappy and flimsy looking wooden door, followed by a male voice, “HEY! AJAX! WAKE UP KID WE GOT WORK TO DO!” Inside the small two room a apartment, sleeping peacefully on a wooden cot covered in some sort of animal skins is a young man, with messy brown hair, and a metal vest and pants, along with boots, however his chest is bare. He squints his eyes as he hears the banging at his door and finally sits up, walking over to the door and pulling it open, causing the man who was banging on it to hit Ajax straight in the face. Ajax fell to the floor and yelled out, “GOD DAMN IT Sid WHAT ARE YA DOIN HITTIN ME FOR?!” The man on the other side, a man at least half a foot taller than the 5 foot 11 inches tall Ajax, and in proportion muscle wise was standing with a look of surprise and horror on his face as he yelled out, “OH MAN AJAX! Are you alright?!” He bent over to try and help his obvious friend to his feet, but Ajax merely pushed him away and said, “No, Sid, don’t do anything, I’ll get to my feet on my own...” Ajax finally got to his feet and started brushing himself off, from falling to the dusty ground. Sid was wearing no shirt or upper body armor, and merely a pair of armored pants and boots along with a red sash. Strapped to Sid’s back was an absolutely gigantic glaive, which had a giant sword blade, a long handle ending in what appeared to be a crescent shaped blade. As Ajax got to his feet Sid said, “Listen pal, we better get goin, Sargent Hilden is waiting for us at the assembly area...So get your weapons and lets get going.” Ajax nodded wearily and went back inside, picking up a pair of odd looking blades. Coming from the handles, the blades curved around the hand and went straight down for a moment, making them have a J shape when held upside-down. Once he got his J Blades, Ajax and Sid nodded to each other and ran off to meet the rest of their men.

Standing in the square of the small village was about 30 warriors, all of them wielding different weapons and wearing different classes of armor, for a battalion of soldiers, it was very ragtag. Standing in front of all of them was a young man with slicked back black hair, and wearing red plate armor. He had the strangest weapon of them all, a large sword with a metal cylinder attached to the bottom, and a trigger in the handle. When Ajax and Sid rode up, the man sighed and said, “Your late Ajax...But I suppose, better late than never...” Ajax smirked and said, “Sorry Sarg, but sleep is more interesting than your speeches...” Sargent Hilden chuckled and said with a happy sigh, “Oh Ajax...Your going to pass that cocky attitude onto your children, I’m sure of it...” He then yelled to the crowd of warriors, “ALRIGHT EVERYONE! We’ve spotted a bunch of Desert Rats calling themselves Sand Hunters out in the Dunes, and we’re gonna go flush em out! GLORY FOR THE AMSTER GUARDS!” The warriors cheered and with that, the warriors started running out of the village towards the distant sand dunes.

Upon arriving at the sandy valley made by the gargantuan dunes, the warriors, began moving slowly and low to the ground so as to avoid fire. Suddenly, the sounds of movement could be heard atop one of the dunes, and a bit of sand slid down the ridge. Ajax looked off in the direction of the movement, his J Blades at the ready, and Sid did the same. When all of a sudden, there was a cry of almost native yelps coming from the ridges, when hundreds of more warriors, all dressed in tan turbans and rusted looking armor, wielding various scimitars and sickles emerged from the sand and charged down. Hilden yelled out, “ATTACK!” With that, the Amster Guards charged towards the Sand Hunters, and within seconds, a heated battle ensued. Sid could be seen swinging his massive glaive with ease and taking out at least 3 Sand Hunters at a time. Meanwhile, Ajax was slashing away furiously with his twin J Blades. At the same time, Sargent Hilden would slash at a few Sand Hunters and then pull the trigger on his handle causing a metal orb to fly from the cylinder and hit the ground in a group of Sand Hand Hunter, wielding a sickle leaped in the air, ready to slash him from behind and slay him. Hilden turned just in time to see it, and all of a sudden, one of Ajax’s J Blades flew through the air and stuck the part of the blade where its curved into the Sand Hunter’s head, killing him instantly. Hilden looked down in surprise as Ajax ran up and grabbed his J Blade and said, “Thats the third time I’ve saved your a** Antiga...I’ll add it to the list of favors you owe me.” The two smirked at each other and ran off to continue the battle.

Within an hour the Sand Hunters began fleeing, seeing that they wouldn’t be able to defeat these warriors, even with their superior numbers. As the Amster fighters gathered together, almost all of them were there, except for about 5 fighters who fell in battle, and one very important fighter. Antiga was breathing heavily and said, “Good job everyone...That’ll keep em from taking this village for a while!” The men and women cheered for their victory, but suddenly, Sid’s voice rang out as he said, “Um...Hey Antiga...Where’s Ajax?” Antiga’s eyes widened as he realized that Ajax was suddenly missing, suddenly he yelled, “CHECK THOSE BODIES!” And with that the Amster fighters ran off to check the corpses.

Meanwhile, Ajax had his hands bound with rope as he was dragged along by the Sand Hunters and suddenly forced to his knees, his head bowed. They were in a camp full of tents, obviously the Sand Hunters forward attack camp. He was breathing heavily as well as he was held to the ground by two Sand Hunters. Slow footsteps could be heard and within seconds, Ajax could see a pair of boots in front of his eyes. A scimitar came out and rested gently under Ajax’s chin as he was forced to look up into the eyes of a very proud looking man. He had a neatly trimmed beard around his chin which was white in some areas as he said, “So...You are the only one we caught yes? What is your name Amster Guard?” Ajax gritted his teeth and looked off to the side as he said, “My name is of no importance to you, and I’m not an Amster Guard...I’m a Merc...” The Sand Hunter chuckled a bit and said, “I see...You are a mercenary...I am Saheem, Chieftain of this tribe...” Ajax scoffed and said, “Well whoopdy flippin do for you...” Saheem smirked, he respected this warriors steadfastness as he said, “I saw the way you fought in that battle...It reminded me of a cornered Rock Tiger...I respect such skill in battle...Now then, a sand storm is coming...Your friends will not find you, not for at least two weeks, so we shall take you to our village...” Saheem looked at his Sand Hunters and said something in a language sounding a lot like Arabic of today, and with that, they pulled Ajax to his feet and led him off to a tent.

As they took Ajax to the Sand Hunter village, the Amster Guards returned to their village, disheartened at the lose of one of their officers. Standing atop a tower attached to the wall, was a very lovely, if not very pale young woman, wearing a red dress with an orange sash, watching the men return. As the gates opened she ran down the steps of the tower, spotting Antiga, she ran up and said, “Antiga! You have returned, but, where is Ajax?” Antiga merely looked at her and said, “Maeta I...” He looked at her sadly and then looked away and walked off quickly. Sid meanwhile walked over to her and lay a hand on her shoulder, saying, “Maeta...Ajax...He...” Maeta looked at him and said, “Where is he Sid? Where is Ajax? Where is my cousin?” Sid sniffled for a moment and said, “He was captured...And the chances of us getting your cousin back are no...” Suddenly, Antiga yelled out, “SID! SHUT UP! She’s sick enough as it is!” Maeta than turned and ran over to Antiga, looking up at him, she said, “But...Ajax...Is he dead?” Antiga turned to her and placed his hands on her shoulders, saying, “We’ll do what we can to get him back...I promise...” With that, the men all walked off, leaving the sickly Maeta, standing there alone. It was no secret that Maeta and Antiga were lovers, and the fact that Maeta was so sick, was a point of great stress and grief for Antiga. The disease she had was, as of now, incurable, and fatal.

Several hours later, the Sand Hunters caravan, filled with the beasts known as Razorbacks, which resembled horses with reptilian features (Spines, a long reptilian tail, reptile legs etc...) pulling carts along, and Ajax, walking with his hands tied to the back of one of the Razorbacks. They finally arrived at a massive stone valley, with buildings built into the craggy stone walls. Saheem hopped off his Razorback to walk with Ajax and said, “Welcome, young warrior...To my home...” As they entered the valley, a huge gate of stone slowly closed behind them, shutting off the only entrance and exit to the valley. Saheem chuckled and said, “There is no escape now...” Ajax sighed and said, “I guess I’m here for an extended period...Call me Ajax, thats my name...” Saheem smiled and patted his shoulder, saying, “Well Ajax...Perhaps you will come to like my tribe eh?” Suddenly a young woman ran up to Saheem, and they began talking in their own language. Saheem shook his head, and she ran off crying, her face in her hands. Ajax watched the scene, confused and said, “Who was that?” Saheem sighed and said, “Her name is Sybilla...She’s my daughter...Do you remember that man you killed? To save your leader?” He looked at Ajax, a serious look on his face. Ajax nodded, and Saheem finished, saying, “He was her betrothed...He was a good man.” Ajax’s eyes widened in horror as he looked off after Sybilla, realizing how much pain this war was causing, how much pain he was causing, and said, “I...I never considered that the people I killed had families...I’m sorry for what I took from you...From her...” Saheem sort of scoffed and said, “Don’t tell me...You’ll have to apologize to her...But later, for now, I’ll show you where your staying.” Within minutes, Ajax was in a jail cell in a large building on the opposite end of the city. He looked around at his stone enclosure, then he sighed and sat down, but almost as soon as he did, he began coughing violently, but soon stopped...He was getting ill.

Within days, Ajax’s health took a turn for the worse, he had grown pale and was constantly shivering, his coughs became more frequent, and sometimes blood accompanied them. Saheem, being the caring and noble leader that he was, had grown concerned. He had placed Ajax in Sybilla’s home, much to her discontent. As Ajax lay shivering, and coughing in a closed, dark closet-like room, the voices of Saheem and Sybilla’s arguing could be heard, as she yelled in the common tongue, “WHY DOES HE HAVE TO HERE?! Father! He killed my fiancee, why do I need to have him in my home?!” Saheem replied, “Because he is ill, and you are a Shaman, this is good training for you. Put aside your anger towards him, in fact, get rid of it...He may have taken Rezal from you, but Rezal was attempting to take someone he cared about from him. I’m not saying it’s fair, but it is as the Spirits decided, do not hate him...This is a good test for you.” The door opened, and Sybilla came in, Ajax looked up at her, his eyes squinted from the light. She kneeled next to him and cradled his head in her arms as she ground some sort of powder into a cup of water and poured it in his mouth. She then gently lay his head down and stood up, pulling a blanket over him, then she left. As she did, she shot a glance at Saheem, then went on with her business of cleaning the house. Ajax settled down finally, and fell asleep, resting finally.

After a few days of Ajax and Sybilla repeating this treatment several times a day, Ajax finally woke up, not shivering, and not in a cold sweat, and not feeling as if he was going to die. He stood up in his dark little room, and walked to the door, shielding his eyes from the sunlight, which nearly blinded him due to his living in darkness for days. Upon exiting the room, he was slipping his armored vest back onto his shoulders. It was at the moment he finally left the room, that he spotted Sybilla, she was sitting on the ground, before a table, upon which, she had lit a pair of incense candles, and a sword lay in between the candles. Ajax walked up next to her and asked, “What is this for?” Sybilla didn’t look at him, she merely said, “It’s a shrine...To my betrothed...” Ajax narrowed his eyes a bit and looked down at his feet, unable to look at her as he said, “I’m sorry...For what I took from you. Also, thank you for helping me these past few days...” Suddenly, she jumped to her feet, turned towards him and yelled out, “YOUR PERFECTLY HEALTHY NOW, WHY DON’T YOU JUST LEAVE ME TO GRIEVE?!” Suddenly, a familiar voice could be heard from the door, the voice said, “Because he can’t...The Season of Sandstorms arrived while he was recovering, and if we let him go now, he would die.” It was Saheem, and at the sight of her distinguished father, Sybilla yelled out, “I DON’T CARE IF HE DIES OR NOT FATHER! I JUST WANT HIM GONE!” With that, she ran from the room in tears and anger. Ajax turned to look at Saheem who said, “Don’t listen to her...She’s just angry...Her anger, like these sandstorms, will pass in time.” Ajax looked at his feet and said, “Even if it doesn’t...Her grief is my fault...I stole someone from her, and she has every right to hate me...” Saheem sighed and lay a hand on Ajax’s shoulder and said, “Come now...I would like you to stop thinking about this for now...In fact, come with me, I’d like to show you our village...” This was a rare honor indeed, it was not very often that an enemy combatant was allowed to stay in the Southern Badlands Tribe’s city for long, unharmed and not in a jail cell, and even less often that the chief took a liking to them.

Back at the Amster village, Sid and Antiga had just returned from going out to scout again, and once more, Maeta was waiting for them. She ran up to them and said, “Any luck?” Sid shook his head and said, “It’s no good...The regional sandstorms have started...We won’t be able to scout out very far for at least two months...” Maeta looked at her feet in despair. She loved her cousin, as if he were her brother, he was all she had left, all either of them had left was each other, since both their families had been killed off by the same disease which she was now ill with. Antiga sighed and said, “Maeta...Come on, lets go home, you shouldn’t be up and walking around like this...” He put his arm around her waist and led her off towards their small house near the village square.

As they walked, Saheem had led Ajax up above the village, along a trail jutting out from the wall of the valley. Ajax was first to speak, as they looked over the city below, “This is a really beautiful place...” Saheem nodded and replied, “Yes...Tell me...Why do you serve the Amster Guards? Even if you are a mercenary...Why them? This tribe is a member of the Sand Hunters Guild, why not fight for us?” Ajax sighed and looked up at the sky, saying, “I dunno...I guess, just because I felt like the Amster Guards could afford to pay me more...Plus, I have friends who are a part of that guild...To top it all off, my cousin is in their care...My family has a history of disease, it causes us to continuously have flu-like symptoms, and eventually kill us...The leader of the Amster Guards in this region, is my cousin’s lover.” Saheem nodded and said, “Yes, the disease you were ill with...We were able to cure it I think, I believe you were having an outbreak of it...Perhaps, if we were to take this medicine to your cousin, it may help her.” Ajax looked over at him, confused and said, “And what do you want in return?” Saheem chuckled and said, “I want you to think beyond your wallet...I want you to decide for yourself, whats right, the Amster Guards, who wish us to succumb to their will, and submit to their rule. Or, the Sand hunters, who merely wish to live free, under no ones rule...Think about it...I will not force any decision on you.” Ajax looked at him, understanding what he was being told, and understood where Saheem was coming from. Lucky he was there for a month, he would need that time to think this over.
