Be a Part of the Counter Culture: Choose a Life of Sexual Purity
This Valentine’s Day is the Fourth Annual Day of Purity

ORLANDO, FL – On February 14, students around the world will celebrate the fourth annual Day of Purity. The Day of Purity, a project of Liberty Counsel, is designed for students of all ages who commit to remain sexually pure until marriage.

The Day of Purity is designed to encourage students to remain sexually pure and counter the popular message that they should have sex early, often, and with many. National advocacy organizations encourage students to explore their sexuality at an early age. Television ads encourage parents to vaccinate their 9-12 year old girls with the HPV vaccine, after reporting the shocking statistic that 6.2 million people are infected each year with HPV and an average of 3,700 women die each year in the U.S. from HPV. Not once do those ads mention that HPV is a sexually transmitted disease – in other words, the ads don’t convey the most important information: you can’t contract HPV if you choose to remain sexually pure. California has adopted the same strategy of vaccinating its students rather than educating them with a bill that requires all girls entering the sixth grade to be vaccinated for HPV.

It’s no surprise that in response to this madness, students yearn for the opportunity to choose a different path. During the first three years of the Day of Purity, students from thousands of schools joined with hundreds of organizations around the world in celebrating sexual purity. A list of some of the supporting organizations is posted at DayOfPurity.org.

When students choose to live a life of sexual purity, lives are protected from the devastating physical and psychological effects of sexual promiscuity. With more than 3 million American teenagers infected each year with sexually transmitted diseases, the only safe choice is sexual purity. The Day of Purity presents an opportunity for millions of students to stand up for self-respect and purity. It’s easy to get involved in the Day of Purity. The Day of Purity web site, DayOfPurity.org, allows anyone to download a planning manual along with informative flyers on a variety of topics, order a LivePure wristband and Day of Purity T-shirt, and link to other valuable resources.

Rena Lindevaldsen, Coordinator of the Day of Purity, said: "We are a country that kills our unborn, puts a governmental stamp of approval on sinful lifestyles, and prohibits discrimination against all religious beliefs except Christianity. Plainly, America is morally challenged, having turned from the moral traditions of our country. Yet, I'm encouraged for our future. I’ve received thousands of e-mails from students around the world who are excited to be able to make a public commitment for sexual purity and to share the message of sexual purity with their friends. Sexual purity is not just about abstinence; it's about making a commitment to try to live a morally pure life. That means making difficult decisions about what we watch, where we go, who we hang out with, what we say, and what we do. The Day of Purity gives us all an opportunity to stand together in respect for the human dignity and worth of each individual."

That's a little screwed up. I mean, I know teens should be encouraged to ignore peer pressure and make their own choices about sex, but that's just it! You don't tell teenagers to "rebel" against's society's expectations to have sex "early, often, and with many" by conforming to a strict "purity until marriage" pledge, because by doing so, you're still conforming to someone's expectations. I'm sick of these advocacy groups telling teenagers that they'll "be free from society" if they abstain from sex. The only way you'll be truly free (sexually speaking, that is) is if you make your own choices about sex and not listen to anyone. That doesn't just mean not having sex because you feel pressured, it also means not abstaining just because some conservative group tells you you should. Bullshit! No one has the right to tell me what's best for me, especially not some "Liberty" Council that is obviously misinformed about so many things. We only discriminate against Christianity? Honey, I'm Pagan, you cannot honestly say I'm not discriminated against? If anything, the government favors Christianity over all other religions, and then the Christians get all pissy when people try to stop them from stomping all over everyone else's beliefs and shoving their Holy Book's down our throats. And have you noticed that now network TV has to not only censor "bad words," they now bleep out all uses of the "Lord's name in vain" as well, so no Christians get offended. And we kill our unborn? Holy crap, not this again. And "human dignity and worth?" "Worth" is the word I have a problem with, it's like saying that my "value" is determined by whether or not I've had sex, as if it really matters.

Purity, in my opinion, has nothing to do with what's between one's legs. Purity is not found in the sexual organs, but in the heart and soul of every individual. Purity isn't about virginity, it's about how we treat each other and ourselves, and it is possible to have sex and maintain your self-respect. I know that if I folded to the pressure of one of these groups, I would only respect myself less because by doing so I would have sacrificed by own beliefs and replaced them with the beliefs of others who think they know what's best for me. Well, I have news for the Liberty Council: you don't know what's best for everyone, and you'll never ensnare those with real self-respect, because if you respect yourself, you respect your own values regardless of what other people want you to believe.

So yeah, that's my opinion on this whole "Day of Purity" bullshit. Sorry if I seem to have gotten too high on my soap box while doing so, I get all super-feminist during this time of the month. It's a Pagan belief that a woman is extra powerful during her period, I guess that's true for me.

This isn't all I'm going to post but anyways.

Dude - you can get HPV off toilet seats.
refuseing a vaccine that can save your life later on is the most ******** stupidest thing I've ever heard of.
PLUS, nobody is pushing young people to have sex, we just want to educate them so they can make healthy decisions, and not end up hurt, dieased or infertile.

How can people be so hostile when you are thinking about their wellbeing?
If you don't want to have sex, then don't. Don't pressure others into something they don't want (being oh so sexually pure rolleyes )

PS NUMBSKULLS (not you people in here)
SEX IS NATURAL.
IT IS PURE.

Don't mix your theology and assholish/sexist ideaology into my sex

Yeah, I've heard that the number of people with HPV is extemely high from what I consider reliables sources. (Talk Sex With Sue Johansen) I remember hearing 70-80%. If that many people really do have it, it's a normal thing, so why be so freaked out about it? And if it can cause cancer and horrible warts, why not make the vaccine widely available to EVERYONE?

Anyway, the good thin to be happy about on Valentine's Day is that the week surrounding it is Freedom To Marry Week. No, not another crazy-a** sex-phobic event ("Being free to marry means you have the freedom to go out and get married if because that's the only good time to have sex, ever!") but a wonderful celebration of gay couples' fight for the freedom to marry. Now THAT is a celebration of love and a way to be free from society's rigid expectations!

I propose a new holiday: Good Sex Day. Dedicate Valentine's Day to talking to your partner about sex, making sweet passionate love to them, educating yourself and others about sex, or just enjoying some good ol' fashioned self-love. heart

And pardon the pun, but where do these people get off?! You can't humanely stop people from having sex. And, like others have said, you're just being bossed around by a conservative abstinence-bully.

And they make it sound like society is out to get us or something! Or that it's bossing us into having sex! Ridiculous.

I ******** loved it. But 1. What's wrong with being super-feminist at all times of the month? and 2. I dunno about the period thing. I actually feel weaker.

EDIT: Feministe or Feminsting have been talking a lot about Purity Balls and their new counterpart, Integrity Balls. Check it out: http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2007/01/24/put-away-dem-titties-puritygirl/

Well, I'm super-feminist most of the time, but I'm extra super-feminist during my period. Not so much during PMS sometimes 'cause I'm all moody, although at the same time I get extra pissed off by sexist stuff.

Ye gods. I looked at the Feministe article, then linked the forums cited on LUELinks.

If you want to go to the forums cited in the Feministe article, be warned that they might be under invasion.

The hell?

You can also get HPV from a towel or something else. It isn't just sex.
Even if your child IS "staying pure," wouldn't you like that extra reassurance that your daughter won't have some disease that could lead to CANCER?
Of course not. Her purity is more important. Cervical cancer patients are just evil whores who strayed and are less deserving of "prodigal son" treatment than other Christians.

I might be wrong but isn't the most common way to catch HPV through Non-intercourse?

I despise all this "purity festivals" crap. This isn't about protecting your children this is about invading their privacy and shaming them for wanting something that you yourself did at some point (hence getting pregnant and having them). I'd disown anyone who actually believes in this crap and goes along with it. neutral Be proud of your virginity but please don't shove it in my face, because frankly I don't care. It doesn't make you special.

EDIT: Ok I just read the Feministe article and I agree with the one crazy person. The country DOES need a revivial. I say we hold a big "Day of Purity" event like woodstock and nuke it. That way all these crazy people will be in one place and we can kill them off before they can start infecting any future generations. rofl I'm really mad about this.

Why are you guys so angry about this? I think you're reading waaayyy too much into it. I don't think it's such a horrible thing. They're just advertising themselves and I think that many students may want to do it, which could possibly be a good thing especially if the statistic is true where they stated that over 3 million teens are contracting STDs from sex. If some people want to go along with it then that's their choice, just like it's your choice not to go along with it... *shrugs* I think they mainly just want to help teens and that to me seems like the main reason for this day of purity thing, how is that so wrong?

The only thing that I think is really silly is the part where they complain that people forget to mention that HPV is a sexually transmitted disease when they give out the vaccine. Well wouldn't you think that by saying,
Doctor: "Hey this vaccine will prevent HPV, a sexually transmitted disease!" The kid is more likely to be like, "Oh! Now I can have all the sex I want without getting that disease! mrgreen " (not that they would) but since they're so determined to fight against sexual promiscuity wouldn't it be better that they left that part out?
Doctor: "Here's a vaccine for HPV, now you can't get it."
Kid: "Yay! Vaccine! 4laugh "

Not to mention, you guys already said it, that you can get it just by rubbing off a towel or something...

Anyways...that's all I really have to say about it... *goes and hides into a little corner whilst her religion is bashed...*

I don't see anyone complaining about anything other than the HPV thing or the idea that these people believe it should be forced on other teens. Nobody is complaining that people are choosing not to have sex. It seems like you're the one reading too much into this thread.

Forced on teens? They aren't forcing anything on them. Just encouraging them to abstain. I don't know how they can force anybody to do anything at all. All they can really do is advertise their cause and hope that some people go along with it.

I wish people would stop saying that...arg oh nevermind...I don't feel like arguing. Can't even have a differing opinion without getting your head bitten off here...

Just forget I said anything. There wouldn't happen to be a delete option so that I may delete my previous post would there?

A more accurate statement is "PurityGirls.com now has 700 members brainwashed by their parents to think that having your father marry you off at a young age like this is the middle ages"

Seriously, from some of those posts on Feministe...it's not the girls that disgust me, it's their parents and how the girls just seem so effing brainwashed. They aren't even given a chance to have some semblance of a life alone to experience life, and they don't understand that they are very capable of working on their own, no, the girl always has to have a man watching over them.

And not being allowed to sit in the lap of someone else...yeesh. Did you see some of the responses that the article cited to that? Someone asked if it were all that bad and the girls were all "OMFG SIN YOU'RE INVITING SATAN." The ********? And then, of course, if you read the comments you'll find out about the dreaded "rape-cuddle," homg.
