crying Lianna has caught her first cold of the whole winter, and on her birthday no less. It is immensely unpleasant...Anyway, seriously though, I have to see my voice teacher tomorrow; does anyone know any quick cold remedies? sweatdrop

Check out the stickied thread.

There's not much you can do to make a cold go away, but try to ease the tension on your throat as much as possible

and let your voice teacher know that you have a cold too, so they'll be more sympathetic.

my teacher has a very specific, "push through it" policy. she hates when I take time off sick because I get rusty.

OMG! She's a teacher and she tells you to PUSH THORUGH IT?!?

That is possibly the worst thing you can do to your voice!

Try to get it to ease as much as possible, though, and at least try to sing, but don't force yourself too much or you'll ruin your throat and sound like you've been smoking cigarette's for 30 years.

Edit: Oh yeah! Lots and lots of Vitamin C! It's good for the immune system. Eat lots of citrus fruits and drink lots of citrus juices and hopefully you'll feel better in the morning (Be careful on the juice though.. don't pick something with super high sugar count)

I'm taking super size horse pill vitamin c right now, and yeah she does. she says that as long as I don't work too hard I should be working. Which in her mind means tapping atleast I high E in warmups gonk Yeah right I can hardly breath dangit!

Edit: do you know if un-concentrated apple juice is good for vitamins?

I know the concentrated stuff in the freezer isle is really good.. (Especially the orange and grape juice)

but if you're talking about just apple juice from a jug, then it's probably better for sugar count.

If you still have some time, or if your neighbor has some, go get some oranges/orange juice.

dang.. it sounds like I'm having a love affair with oranges or something >.<

My voice teacher always said to sing through it... I've had lessons that were almost completely warmup excercises just for the purpose of getting the phlegm out of the way. She suggested breathing in lots of steam. It's important to avoid throat losenges and cough drops because tehy numb your throat and you could hurt yourself and not realise it. It's also important to avoid clearing your throat.

Yeah, back when I started singing I had to break the habit of clearing my throat a lot that a lot of singers pick up to control nerves, I know that can do loads off harm, but mostly I don't care for cough drops much because numbing makes me kinda uncomfortable, you can't really feel the control on your soft palate as much so it effects a judge of space, plus it leaves your throat feeing kinda gunky after from all the sugar in those things

Edit: I had to miss my lesson today because I almost totally lost my voice just talking about half way through the day, and I'm kinda bummed because I have pieces I could be working on that I can't do much for. My chest voice is pretty much shot right now crying

aww sad too bad it didn't clear up. It's always bad when a singer loses their voice.

Take good care of that throat. Make sure it's warmly wraped in a scarf when you go outside so it can heal better. Cold slows the healing process (No, it doesn't make you sick if you're healthy, contrary to popular belief.. it just slows your immune system to make it easier for virus' to attack)

I really kinda enjoy scarves in general sweatdrop , but do you think that would seriously help the healing process? I've been drinking a lot of warm vanilla-chai ( vanilla so i don't have to add sugar or dairy of any sort)so as to avoid coughing and stuff and the warm seems to help if not just to sooth my throat. sweatdrop

Yeah, it does. Nothing natural works too well in the cold. (Even those adapted to cold weather can still die from the cold).

Besides, didn't you ever notice how you heal faster in the summer than in the winter?

Aww..that sucks. I know the feeling well. I had flu the whole of the week before my birthday and my throat is still clogged up from it a month later. It's not too helpful when I'm trying to prepare for my singing exam.

Also, for my birthday I went to see Avenue Q, and I annoyed everyone sat around me by coughing through the first half and everyone on the train by singing all the songs in a really croaky voice with my two friends.
