I was talking to a random person about RENT once, and the conversation naturally turned to the tragic death of Jonathan Larson. We got into talking about the "story behind RENT," and she got me thinking...

How many people would love RENT as much as they do if there wasn't the story of Jonathan Larson behind it?

I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be as much pulicity about it, but what about just the actual musical by itself?

When I first watched RENT I didn't know much about Jonathon Larson. I saw the movie, thought of it as original, and adored the music. It soared to the top of my obsession list, and as it did, I learned more about the musical, which helped it pick up speed.

Hello! I'm new here ^^

Well I seen RENT just a month ago, and of course I din't know about Jonthan Larson's death.

I love RENT since the first moment of the movie, when I was hearing the melody in the piano. And just like the other musicals who get into my heart, I think that I will love RENT always.

I didn't know squat about Rent when it came out. Litterally i needed a christmas present for my friend, saw commercials for a new musical (in movie form of course) and went she likes musicals i'll take her to that. Now we're obsessed.

But I get what you mean about that. I'm sure there are people out there where the main attraction for them is the story behind RENT. It's sad that people will judge a musical on that and not the musicals content itself but it does happen. However Rent is such a wonderful musical that i'm sure people would love it even if they didn't know the story. I know I did.

I kinda knew about Johnathin, but not really.
I got into RENT because my best friend always ranted about it.
So I finally listened to the music and loved it.
But then I watched a documentary about him...
And I appreciated the whole story a lot more.

I was into RENT long before I knew anything about Jonathan's story. Learning all of that just deepened my love for it. 4laugh

My friend told me about Johnathan after I watched the movie....so it intrigued me to explore more about it.

I had no idea about Jonathan Larson before I saw RENT, so I loved it without knowing his story.

After hearing about what happened to him, I still loved RENT just as much.

I do agree, however, with the fact that RENT was only as huge as it was because of what had happened to Jonathan. I mean, RENT is really, really, really great, but you have to admit his death was kind of convenient. And I mean no offence by that, no one's happy that he died.

Before I started getting TOTALLY into it, I just decided to watch the movie with my two best friends because we were all three starting to get into Broadway musicals, and I had heard good stuff about RENT. I wasn't expecting it to kick Avenue Q out of it's position as my favorite musical, though.

So when I first watched it, I was just expecting to be like, "Heh. Cool." I didn't even know... I'm sorry to say this, but I didn't even know Jonathon Larson's name! And even without the name behind it, I cried watching it and it became my all-time favorite... - ANYTHING. So... Yeah. But once I learned about how Jonathon died tragically before the day it opened off-broadway, how horrible it was, how RENT "was his baby," how he died before he got to see his musical acted out and performed for real, made me cry again, and made me worship this man - and this man's musical, even more. heart

BYTHEWAY, guys, tomorrow is Jonathon's death date, if anyone noticed... And the day after that (obviously), Original Off-Broadway RENT's birthday. <.<

I, unfortunately, saw the Movie first.
Which I quickly obsessed over.
..
And then learned of the Broadway Play,
And then moved more over to that.
I still have yet to have the pleasure of seeing it,
But..
Still. : D

I've bought the OBCR recently, and I LOVE listening to them.

I watched the Movie with Commentary, just to learn more about it,
And that's kinda when I learned of Jonathan's passing.

It truely is a shame.
I'm sure he could have offered more than he already did.
[Which, of course, is plenty already, but...You know. : D]

My he rest in peice! <3

When I first watched RENT, I didnt even know about Jonathon Larson's death. After I had watched the film, I looked into the Extras and watched the bonus material which included the Documentary. After knowing that, the movie became much more sadder to watch.

I knew absolutely nothing about Jonathan Larson when I saw Rent. And afterwards, even when I fell completely obsessively in love with it, I didn't know much about him. It wasn't until much later. So no matter what his story would've been, as long as Rent stayed the same, I'd still enjoy it.
