Well, I don't really like saying one is better than the other. There is a tendency for female mangaka to focus on romance, and for some people, that isn't their cup of tea. In my opinion, there are just as many female mangaka that make excellent series as there are male ones.

Liking shoujo manga isn't being "gay". I like both shoujo and shonen manga, and only because the stories are well-written, not for any kind of inclination. The same is true for most of the male otakus I've met smile

It really depends on the mangaka themselves. I mean, I've read quite a good lot of manga done by females that have made me roll my eyes and think 'for goodness sakes!', but there have also been a number of manga done by males that have made me just want to chuck the book (but I don't...the poor book hadn't done anything wrong).
So...I suppose I can't pick either.
