I've assumed for a while that FTW was an acronym for 'For The Win' but now Sin is telling me she believes it is just WTF (What The *Expletive*) inverted. What do you think FTW ish?

It's for the win, but some people one day saw it, and, not wanting to make a fool of themselves by asking, assumed it was wtf backwards. The rumor has been spreading around that it's that has spread ever since, and people are split on the subject.

I use it in a variety of ways.
Mainly, though, I find myself using it as a substitute of "BTW," By the Way. I don't know why, I just do. neutral

If FTW is just WTF backwards, like lots of people think, instead of for the win... then what would be the meaning of FTL? surely, if FTL is for the lose, FTW would be for the win, no?

I think it was supposed to be For the Win, but now it's become sorta like what "pwn" is now.

Uta Arashi I've only ever used it as "for the win" because...everything else is just stupid to me. Why the hell would someone invert WTF? Srsly. Well... maybe for a similar reason that "the" became "teh" Well... that was more of a mistype methinks... hitting the "e" key before the "h" key (i've done it by accident many MANY times...) Whereas inverting "wtf" to "ftw" is kinda... intentional... but it might have been done to look something like "teh" But, I digress. I don't really think that when whoever came up with "ftw" meant it to be an inverted "wtf" However, since enough people use it to mean an inverted wtf... it would qualify as meaning that... but it could also mean the original "for the win"... That's why I like to use it "in context" x_x stupid english class... ._.

From the desk of Wikipedia - Land of possibly questionable accuracy but ever reliable internet lingo
ftw. (Forschungszentrum Telekommunikation Wien) - Telecommunications Research Center Vienna, [1] Fort Worth Meacham International Airport, an airport whose IATA airport code is FTW. F.T.W. (film), a 1994 film about an ex-con who is a rodeo ******** The World, a tattoo seen on bikers, prison inmates, and punks. In common use since the early 1970s.[2][3] Also popular among bikers, meaning "Forever Two Wheels" A song by the psychobilly band Tiger Army entitled FTW; meaning ******** The World, from their Tiger Army II: Power Of Moonlite album. An off-shoot of the ECW World Heavyweight Championship known as the FTW World Heavyweight Championship in ECW (FTW standing for ******** The World) Used as an acronym for the sentence fragment For The Win to show preference for something over another. Most likely a reference to the television game show Hollywood Squares, in which players declare their (usually obvious) intention to win the game with a particular play.[4] Sample usage might be "Linux FTW!" or in conversation, "Appetizers are great at dinner," "Nachos FTW!" FTW, the application extension assigned to Family Tree Maker data files. F.T.W., a song by mc chris on the album dungeon master of ceremonies. F.T.W., a song by Sword on the album Metalized From The Wilderness
