I see art as a creation of expression that appeals to the senses. It could be visual (a painting), audible (music), edible (cuisine), smellable (perfume), and possibly touchable (yeah, I don't really have any examples for this one).
But there are those who don't agree. Some think that something that ISN'T art is something that doesn't appeal to them. But then that would answer the question "What is art to you?" and not "What is art?"
I'd just like to know what other people think about that. Oh, and also, what would have to be done in order to create 'art' and not just pictures or food or background noise?

Art is just one of those words, eh? I suppose, to me it would be any creation with a meaning behind it. Whether that meaning is 'deep' or not doesn't really matter. It could just be 'I made this because it looks frickin cool.'
But really, it's one of the most relative things there is. I once showed my teacher a ball of tinfoil I was collecting in order to recycle- she decided it looked like a creature and gave me extra credit. But really, I just tend to recycle a lot of things. o.O

Ohh, I love what you used as examples of art, I'd have to fully agree with all of them! But I'd like to say some other things that I believe are art, if you wouldn't mind.
Dreams; somethings that you cannot physically grasp the idea, or meaning of. Some examples of what I mean are; In literal meaning, dreams when you sleep or day-dream. A form of expression of possible theory. (i.e.; science, religion, morals, etc.)
The Human Mind, need I say any more?

"art", is basically anything a person wants it to be. ya know that saying, "what's garbage to one man is treasure to another". well, the same could be said with art[:
[to me, art is music, photography, poetry, writing, sculptures, wierd designs, images, the human race, and the list goes on]

"Appeals to the senses" is very much an opinion thing...
It may very well appeal to your senses when it doesn't appeal to someone else's. Other than that... it could be anything.

Art... hm. this is a odd one for sure, 'what is art.' Well it seems the issue is not what is art, but rather can art ever be defenied without relation to the beholder. Obviously their are somethings which we refer to as art because of our enviroment. That is, we probably all learned that painting was an art or that music is an art, so we all probably feel the same about these things being arts. If we are sure art can be defined at all, then it is clear that there must be something which is not art. Is there anything that is not art? And more importatly, would people in general agree with these things being not arts as they generally agree that painting and music and so on are arts? I think there are some polar extremes which we can call art and not art. (say a hammer, I don't think a hammer is a work of art and I don't know anyone who would.) But since there are somethings between the hammer and a peice of music, I'm not sure where the line should be drawn, nor what the universal defention of art is.
