In the later years of his life, it is rumored that Abraham Lincoln became interested in parapsychology. Perhaps that is why his spirit haunts his former Presidential residence. It is said that Eleanor Roosevelt befriended Lincoln's spirit during her time as First Lady. "Honest Abe's" ghost has been seen in many areas of the White House, and its said that he frequently frightens the maids. Mrs. Lincoln partook in seances in the Green Room after the Lincoln's son, Willie, passed away while Abe was in office. His ghost has been seen running in the halls, and unexplained child-like giggling has been reported. Both Abe and Willie haunt the Lincoln Bedroom, a room in the White House where Abe had his office and his cabinet.
When Teddy Roosevelt took office, he had many items that belonged to the Lincoln's moved into this room, including their Grand Bedroom Suite. Thus, the room became known as the Lincoln Bedroom, and with its name change, would come the spirits.
Andrew Jackson's ghost is said to inhabit the Green Room. Apparently, he appears in the evenings, and can be heard "cussing up a storm". Dolly Madison has been seen near the Rose Garden. Oddly, former Presidents and their families are not the only spirits at the White House. A mysterious and ghostly cat roams the mansion's corridors.
Witnesses have reported seeing a British soldier holding a torch in his hand walking around the lawn of the White House. Several British soldiers died on the White House lawn in 1814 when the British set fire to the large mansion during the War of 1812. Perhaps the soldier roams the grounds, still attempting to complete his mission.
