We need to love the sinners, in such a wonderful way such as God did. It's not a matter of judging someone or not: They are already condemned by God's law... it's not our duty to condemn them, but to make them see that their actions are wrong. It does not, however, give us the power to kick someone out of church because they are sinners, for God wants sinners to hear the message of forgiveness and reconciliation. That's only a part of true Christian love.
But what about those Christians that don't have any kind of empathy towards the needy? It's because people don't take things seriously. John MacArthur explained this well in his book "Hard to Believe." He said correctly that Christ demanded those who wanted to become Christians had to do three things: 1) Deny himself (not living for oneself; being tired of our own sinful nature and wanting to change, which means true repentance and converting), 2) Take his cross every day (which means, accepting to suffer in His name; doing His will instead of ours), 3) Follow Him (do what He tells us to do; obey Him). That is true Christianity, not just someone who goes, says the "sinner prayer" and that's it.
Modern evangelism has brought a lot of people who aren't true Christian, into being deceived by the illusion that they are Christians because "they accepted Christ." If a person really accepts Christ, the character of Christ will be more and more easily reflected in his life. He will desire to change, he will desire to do God's will, and he will hate sin and show disgust at the world's attitude. It's a total change, a total renewal... a true redemption, not just something that comes and goes with subjective feelings.
Also, globalization has Americanized the world, which means that people are now more propense to live for entertainment rather than for what is important. It also means people are living for what they want instead of for what they need. That's why you see people being in discontent with Socialism or Socialdemocracy: Because they all want to be rich, without having any kind of empathy towards those who don't even have a bread or a house to live in. Rampant Capitalism has only made us more selfish, and the consumist world we live in, is in constant and total opposition to God's will.
True Christian love means loving as Jesus did. It's being compassionate to those who need it. I still criticize of most Christians worldwide in our days, that they only think about themselves in our days. They prefer wasting US$300 dollars in an iPod, instead of giving that quantity to buy food for the poor; they prefer going to a resort, but you never see them bringing a homeless person to sleep at their house. And the question that should be at the top is: "Is this how Christ wants us to live?" The absolute answer is: No.
"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me'."
(Matthew 25:41-43, NIV)
