Alright, I know we've all heard it alot "Book 6 was awful! Everyone was so OOC!" Heck, I even agreed(even though my ships sailed!), up until a few days ago when something occured to me. We've never seen these characters in these sitations before. Some spoilers for book 6!!!
First of all Hermione, who's gotten the biggest changes. We were all shocked to see rule loving Hermione Granger turn into a jealous harpy and fling birds at Ron's head. But have we EVER seen Hermione get jealous before? Has she ever had REASON to get jealous before? No. I think it all lies in the the Lavender situation. All of a sudden Ron, who Hermione's had all to herself, has a GIRLFRIEND. This has never happened before, and unfortunately Hermione's rather bad side comes out. She even goes so far as to date McLaggen to get back at Ron. Harry's change of character isn't that big in my eyes, although some say his crush on Ginny was very unrealistic. Yeah well, it really wasn't. In fact, I think it's the most realistic of ALL the couples. Teenagers don't spend YEARS developing their crushes, usually it happens in a few months(or heck, days depending on the person!). So why is it so strange that Harry should develop feelings for Ginny(Who's finally opened up around him) after spending all summer with her, and then most of the school year with her? Heck, take a peak at Lavender and Ron, nobody's calling HER crush unrealistic, and it developed over the summer! Speaking of Ginny, she finally comes out of her shell and everyone screams OOC? The other Weasly's TOLD us that she acted unusual around Harry, and we even got to see a bit of the real her(CoS when she defended him against Malfoy "Harry didn't want that!"). There's a great and realistic explanation for her coming out- Hermione told her it would work better at getting Harry's attention, and it DID! As for Ron, eh he's always been a little immature. I didn't really see too much change with him. I was dissapointed in his relationship with Lavender and how he treated Hermione, but JK felt it necessary for him to mature a little and have a meaningless relationship before he'd be worthy of Hermione.
So that's all I can think of right now! Comments? Other characters OOC?

Well honestly I don't think they were OOC either. I mean if you stop and think about it who are WE to say they were OOC? We didn't create the characters so only JK Rowling knows where she wants them to go and how she wants them to develop. Who are we to tell her, "yeah this isnt how your character is supposed to act"? They're HER characters not ours.... I'm dying to read the last book though xd

Yeah, that's one of my other gripes. A character can't be OOC in cannon. Their character CAN be changed though, I was just trying to show that maybe the changes aren't as huge as they're made out to be.

seriously, how many of us have changed by how much over six years? It would be less believable (and less enjoyable to read) if all of the characters remained static.

But have we EVER seen Hermione get jealous before? Has she ever had REASON to get jealous before? actually, in book 4 she got very upset with ron who was going to ask her to the dance but didnt... she was upset cus he planned to but she went with someone else. but throughout all the books there has been slight clashes between them, its obvious they should be going out its just neither of them know how to handle it. i think book 6 just bought that toic all out into the open rather than hinting at it. and as for book 6 in general, i loved it! i think its a shame what She did to certain characters, but all in all i thought it was great!

I love the whole series. I might have to use my home time to read it now. Because things get fuzzy after it being a while since I've read them. 6 was really great to me, was like a nice drama movie or something.

I like how the characters change. People change so it's more realistic if you have your characters change. I get so sick of characters who never develop. The whole theme of the series is that they're at a school, and clearly at the most critical stage of development. I like how they get more serious as the book goes on. The books would be boring if the characters never grew or changed

Awww, I loved Harry/Ginny, I thought they were adorable together, and didn't think it was unrealistic at all, just sad at the end.

When reading book 6 I honestly was glad with what she did to most of the characters. Ginny was finally a full person, Hermione proved she was human after all, Harry finally managed to, if not get a grasp on all the crap he's been through, at least managed to put it far enough behind him that he's able to think. As for Ron, well, I saw it comming since book 2, but what the heck. He's a highschool guy, your averaged teenager, and as such he's something of a dumbass and we love him anyway. There was nothing that didn't make sense to me as far as characters.
That said, while the book it self was good, I didn't enjoy it as much as the others. To me, it felt rushed. I loved 3, 4, and 5 for how much detail was put into the relationships in general, not just the romantic ones. I was looking forward to a sprawling work at least as long as 5, watching them patch up everything that has gone bad over the past couple books, and then getting strained, if not ripped appart when at least Dumbledor (seriously, who didn't see him getting whacked so that Harry had no higher power to lean on for 7?) died. Heh, I was actually expecting at least one of the Weaslies to get it too, and several of those side characters in Diagon Alley. And some other students.
Then again, I'm something of a sadist. *shrugs*
But, yeah. I still feel that she got kinda lazy with it. I'd have gladly waited another year if she was being slowed down by all the movies and stuff, but what's done is done, and so I'll just have to hope for more in 7.

I think I'd rather just keep my eyes shut to the spoilers, I tend to wait for the movies to just abridge the stories. that way I cn understand the story without getting too lost. razz besides, I cant keep my focus on books, I'm busy writing a sprite comic for another guild.

I, too, thought the characters matured appropriately for their years. Another thing to consider is human nature; that is to say, the human nature of the audience, US. Even though in "real life" people change all the time, and sometimes much more quickly than JK's people have been, media characters tend to stay frozen in time; and much of the time, that's because people don't LIKE those characters to change. They like the familiar, the steady, the unchanging... because it can be relied upon. When they change, it causes the audience to grow a little, too, or be left behind... and everyone knows how much people like to change on their own... [/sarcasm]
As for what she did to certain characters... well... death has been a part of Rowling's little universe that she's been loaning us since the first page of the first book; and there were hints even in that first book that a certain big character would someday bite the bullet.
SPOILER SPACE! SPOILER SPACE! SPOILER SPACE! SPOILER SPACE! SPOILER SPACE! SPOILER SPACE!
After all, Dumbledor's bird is a phoenix, risen from the ashes of its death to live again. (And what a name! Those who have watched V For Vendetta probably have a better understanding of the irony of the firebird's name now...) He helped Nicholas Flamel create the Philosopher's Stone (or Sorceror's Stone for the "dumb Americans"... wink ), and after it was destroyed, said that Flamel was readying himself for the next big adventure. There have been hints all the way along, if one is paying attention. And as for Snape... well, I personally believe he's just playing his part. After all, what better way to get an "inside man" back into Voldemort's good graces than to kill Voldemort's mortal enemy--the only man Voldemort is afraid of? Of course, I could still be proven wrong... right now, there's only one person who knows for sure what's going to happen... JK herself.
Anyhoo... my 2 cents' worth. ^_^

Well I have to say I agree with aretoo on the whole, people refusing to change thing. What they need to realize though is that they have no control over other people's characters. And... wait there were hints? I feel so lame for not picking that up xd
And also... I KNEW SNAPE WAS AN a*****e I KNEW IT!
