Have any of you played these impossible Classics?

The Contra Series has been known as one of the hardest series ever made, beyond Battle Toads, which is true since in Contra hit = death.

Here's an interesting tid-bit:

wikipedia
The most likely source of the name "Contra" is from the Iran-Contra affair, which occurred during the second term of President Ronald Reagan. Subsequently, when the controversy was reaching its apex, it likely resulted in the renaming of the console ports of Super Contra that became known in the west as Super C.

The in-game use of the term "Contra" is explained in the manual of both Contra: Shattered Soldier and the Famicom port of Contra as "a title awarded to a superior soldier possessing almost super human drive and ability, while excelling in guerrilla tactics".

Contra Time Line:

arrow Contra (1987)
arrow Super Contra (198 cool
arrow Super C (1990)
arrow Operation C (1991)
arrow Contra Force (1992)
arrow Contra 3 (1992)
arrow Contra: Hard Corps (1994)
arrow Contra: Legacy of War (1996)
arrow The Contra Adventure (1997)
arrow Contra Advanced (2002)
arrow Contra: Shattered Soldier (2002)
arrow Neo Contra (2004)

So! That about does it! What are your thoughts of this legendary (and sometimes crappy) franchise?

Sometimes is an understatement, contra sort of always blows. I'll take metal slug over contra any day 3nodding

Rocket Lawncha! *shew shew*

I played them, and didn't like them not because they were hard (I always love a challenge), but because everything from the looks to the sound is annoying. It's ugly, it's repetetive, I don't like it. The absolute hardest 2d game ever I'd have to say is Metal Slug 4 in the arcade... Oh god the pain gonk

Oh, don't get me wrong, metal slug is a way better game and later incarnations of Contra were terrible. But contra 3 is regarded as one of the hardest games for super nintendo.

I heard that the first one was terribly hard. It was enjoyable to watch as a kid, but times have changed!

You know the funny thing is in Japan, the Genesis version actually had LIFE BARS but they took them away for the US versions >.>

That's odd... Usually they made things easier for the US... I wonder why they made contra harder?

For some reason, for me one of the hardest games on SNES was Super Star Wars. I never could beat that game sweatdrop

That is wierd, they made Contra easier in Japan yet they made Bayou Billy harder over here o.O So which country really enjoys a greater challange? Japan or USA? ninja

No America didn't make things any easier.

I think it's unfair to count the whole country. There are American's that love as much of a challenge as any Japanese person. But hardcore gaming is bigger in Japan so there are more people in Japan interested in a challenge.

I wonder when they have the time to play Contra when they spend a good amount of time at work or in school....

Not everyone in Japan is the stereotype of the overachieving shy buisnessman with glasses. There are plenty of high school dropouts that spend their days in the arcade. And it's much like finding the time to read. There's always time before you go to bed, on the bus/train, and on days off. Why do you think DS sales are so huge there. domokun

It's actually a fact that right now Japan is heading into an economic suicide because there's not enough of the young generation that wants to work hard and take care of the country, Japan's population in 50 years is supposed to drop by 68%. But that's another topic in its own.
