I think I've made a post for this before but I don't remember where. XD Basically, what really annoys you in fanfiction? Besides the obvious OOCness. Most of you admit to reading crack fanfics and all, so what WON'T you read?
For me, it's mpreg. It happens, BAM! And no one seems to say "How the ******** did this happen to me? A MALE?" Or they think that Naruto can get pregnant in Oroike no Jutsu... Ok... It's genjutsu people... Illusion... But, but! I might read one if it came highly enough reccomended by someone I know.
Second... AU! AU can be awesome when done right! I read a Gundam Wing (Shows my age?) AU long ago that kept me up for hours reading it. But I have yet to see a good Naruto AU. Anyone have any suggestions?
AU pt 2. Highschool and Prince/richman x slave/whore. OVERDONE! And also, why is Sasuke always the popular one in HS!? I know these writers are in High School, so why are they being so unrealistic! Sasuke's anti-social attitude and scholastic attributes would earn him no fans, save for the girls that think he's pretty but would never speak to him.
On my last note, I was thinking of doing a little test. Writing one of the said crack/cliche fics and seeing how much people really like that stuff. =/ My friends even came up with a list..

It's genjutsu people... Illusion... But, but! I might read one if it came highly enough reccomended by someone I know. I don't generally like mpreg, either, but Self Reliance is a very good one. Funny, too. x_LoveObject_x Second... AU! AU can be awesome when done right! I read a Gundam Wing (Shows my age?) AU long ago that kept me up for hours reading it. But I have yet to see a good Naruto AU. Anyone have any suggestions? There are tons of good AUs. If you're open to good ones, I'm surprised that you haven't found one yet; I've read plenty, and I'm a very picky reader. I can't remember any titles off of the top of my head (I'm horrible with names), but I'll look through the archives I frequent later. x_LoveObject_x AU pt 2. ^^; I tend to get a little annoyed when people don't like something because it's 'overdone.' MOST things in a fandom are overdone. There are only so many plot ideas floating around out there. But different authors add their own spin. Different writing styles, talent levels, and character interpretations all come together to make the really good stories individual. It would be really sad to bypass an awesome story just because you grouped it in with all those others written on the same topic, but by mediocre authors. As for Sasuke always being popular... hm. I never really thought about that. However, if I had to give a reason, it would be that Sasuke is popular in Konoha. If it's believable there, it could be believable in a high school setting. After all, the academy that all of the characters attended WAS a school, and Sasuke was popular there. Granted, it wasn't the typical type of pupularity, rather one where the girls all adored him, and he was this sort of unreachable idol. His popularity wasn't the type where he had a lot of friends. Likewise, that's how I usually see his popularity portrayed in high school AUs. Actually, I think that's the ONLY way I've seen it portrayed. Naruto, on the other hand, is often portrayed as being the typical type of popular, with lots of friends, occasionally as a jock. But I've never seen Sasuke that way. As for the original question, I don't really have any pet peeves or anything like that as far as the TYPE of fanfiction goes. If something is well-written, I'll give it a shot. It DOES have to be decently written, though, meaning a minimum of spelling errors and typos, and a good grasp of the English language.

confused Everything but mpreg and High School AU I've written, at least what you just listed. I've not often been proud of my work either, but I am of those, and that kind of stings. I think most stories (most... I've seen some that were horribly written, one paragraph but went on for three pages, author notes in the middle of the story...) are purely a matter of taste. I think GaiLee is kinda icky, but I just... don't read it. Unless someone I knew suggested a really good story. Even then, I probably wouldn't. I know people who love my ItaSasu stories, but won't read the SasuNaru one because it isn't what they're into. I dunno, I guess I think it's generalizing, though gladly I could suggest more than a few good Naruto AUs. (Haven't been brave enough to sit through one mpreg though, no stories to offer there)
neutral Don't doooo it. Keep writing your stories the way you want, don't write one just to see if anyone might be attracted to it because of it's 'cliche' levels. One of my favorite Naruto fan fictions is 'cliche' but still the best AU characterizations of Naruto and Sasuke that I've seen.
I think anything, done right, can work. It's really a matter of finding fan fiction that's written by talented authors. 3nodding

I have a great dislike of M-preg. Partially because of the total lack of reality, and often poor quality of writing, but also kinda because I don't really like kids.
With AU, it depends on how well it's done. I haven't personally come across many great Naruto AUs, but I'm sure they're out there. It's all in how well it's written.
Highschool fics are good when done well, but are often really bad. In some cases the rich-manxslave type thing is good, but I haven't encountered a decent Naruto fic with that storyline yet.
As you can see from above, one of my biggest deciding factors is the quality. A few times I've read things that have what would've been good plots, but were written and expressed so poorly that the fics were terrible. It saddens me.
My personal all-time biggest fanfic pet peeves are: Gender-bending. If you think the character is good paired with someone, you shouldn't change their gender just to make the pairing het. So-called 'stories' written in 'txt-talk' and chatspeak. No explanation needed. The 'long-lost-sister/female-family-member' thing. Just like gender bending, the writer thinks the personalities go well but wants a het pairing, so they insert a female version.

Mpreg used to bother me, but...not so much anymore. *points at Chieira* I rp it with her! XDDD And besides, one of my best Mpregs with another friend of mine led to two more Rps about their kids. Those kids have become some of my most well-developed characters ever. *_*
AU...I love AU. crying Most of mine are AU anyways. My best fanfiction was an AU. I enjoy reading them cause I like to see what others come up with and what kind of situations people can put the characters in. ^__^
Highschool fics..? *GUILTY* God, I have to be the cliche queen. XD Sure, it's overdone. I myself have Rped and written about 7 maybe... XD;; But every single one is different. Never have I actually repeated a storyline or a plot. I rp it with a number of people, and i have actually one going on right now. It's absolutely amazing. ^^ Cliches dont bother me one bit! <3
But. I'll tell you one thing that does bother me. OCs paired with main characters. I can not stand that. crying Usually people new to the fandom (in other words, sucky writers) do that kind of thing. It's absolutely bad. Mary-Sues EVERYWHERE. x__x I refuse to read some of my younger friends stories cause they have their characters paired with Sasuke and Naruto. It makes me very sad. T^T But that's about it. I'll give anything else a chance. XD I'm not picky at all, really.

Oh god yes. stare I've seen 'stories' that were also just script style RPs. If you say it's script style, follow through with it, make it more... scripty. ^^; It annoys me when someone posts - Sasuke: HOMG I'm so hot! Naruto: Yeah, I know! *runs around happily in circles* That isn't a story. It's fine for roleplaying, but not a story. @.@ Mary Sues and 'I'm Kakashi's long lost cousin who also is Jiraiya's niece!' kill fandoms. Yu Yu Hakusho used to have tons of good authors. I'm not against het, but really... there weren't many people to logically pair up Kurama with that weren't men. As soon as most of the YYH fandom was merely self inserts, I didn't see as many good YYH stories.

I have yet to find a highschool storyline that could keep my attention. stare
Mpreg and gender-bending should only be done humourously. I always have a preference to funny stories. xd
And I try not to bash a Mary-sue straight off the bat. They are something a writer has to grow out of. I am guilty of conjuring up one or two in my head. I've tried to evolve them into a more tolerable form. It's very difficult to have a original female character without feeling it's a bit Mary-sue-ish.

sketchfiend Mpreg and gender-bending should only be done humourously. sweatdrop Nee, I don't like people talking about what should or shouldn't be done in fanfiction, or in what context, though maybe you only meant according to your preferences, not overall. I think that just about anything can be enjoyable if it's well-written. That doesn't mean that it's going to be to your tastes, but that doesn't make it bad. I'm not a fan of the gender-bending myself, but to each his own. I can enjoy mpreg, though usually only in RP. Though, as I said earlier, Self Reliance is an awesome (and funny) mpreg fic, and I'd reccommend it to anyone. I have a friend who absolutely hates mpreg, but adores that fic. Obviously, I don't like ALL mpreg. T__T I read a Yusuke/Kurama one that scarred me for life. It was like one of those things that is awful, but you just can't look away. And it was very excellently written, but... pregnant!Yusuke just makes me cry inside. Doesn't mean it was a bad fic... just definitely not to my tastes. Though if I was going to criticize anything about it, it would have to be that the further it got into the fic, the more out of character and 'feminized' Yusuke got, which drove me insane.

I am guilty of conjuring up one or two in my head. I've tried to evolve them into a more tolerable form. It's very difficult to have a original female character without feeling it's a bit Mary-sue-ish. I'm sure there are a lot of people who have thought of humping an anime character or two. The thing is, not everyone wants to be subjected to that. I've been reading fan fiction, way before I read yaoi, and even then... Mary Sues were horrible. Yes, it's done by young writers who sometimes evolve into better authors. The thing is, most of the time when you try to even nicely give critique about spelling or grammar, or even the out of characterness of it all, that person deletes your post and rambles on and on about how much of a victim she is for having one review who didn't worship the ground she walked on. You can have original female or male characters, but really, they need to stay away from anything but original stories. If one were to write a story about a new hidden village, or maybe a original character that exisits within a established village but has little to no interaction with cannon characters, then that's fine. The best way to know if you have a Sue or not, is to make sure you have a big piece of humble pie. Perfect/ZOMG so bootiful!/unrealisticly strong characters always equal Sue. Someone who acts perfect, but has that as a weakness as well, that's fine. I'm just tired of seeing original characters who step in, b***h at Sasuke, then ignore him and he simply blushes and looks away.

It was kind of like, "...Wow... that's impossible in so many ways that I don't even know how to begin..." ^^; Oh yes... I remember her. I find it funny that while her character made no sense, she still insisted that it was just fine. That, and how she had a smaller waist than what's normal for her height and boobs that would have made a large woman fall over. >.> I don't see how people think that ninjas are built like that. If you look at any of the ninja women that have been depicted in the manga, they've all looked realistic. No stick waists and huge boobs. True, Tsunade and Hinata have *cough* nice ones, but they also have a wider hip/waist than the others.

I suppose I should be flattered that you reviewed a few of mine then? heart Oh yeah, Kabuto's glad you're keeping him company in the closet, but I had to remove Kimimaro, since he insisted it was breaking the restraining order he had on you. 3nodding Wow, shows what I get for not being on a whole day! You all have pretty much encouraged me. I'm kind of upset that a serious work of mine (Plot, no sex, kind of action/drama) was getting so little attention while my pwp's get reviews out the a**... but I thought... oh well. *Sigh* So I thought, maybe I should drop being serious and just do something fun for a while. Something I can play with, and that might boost my courage again? crying I sound so pathetic. I'm at a low, sorry. So anyway, I agree about the mpreg. Good for rp, but mostly, it's probably better to keep it that way. But! I was encouraged by all you HS AU readers. I thought about trying that since my friend handed me this long list of who like... everyone would be... a few of them= Yondaime= Single Father (Naruto's of course) Jiraiya-Lit teacher XD Gaara-We kind of decided he was the Goth/EMO no one dared to mess with since he like, messed someone up once XD Sasuke- Emo, rich but unnoticed kid Sasori- Art teacher XD (With Dei as his college student aid XD) There's so much more... I even came up with a ******** up Uchihacest plot for part of it. (*Still swears not to like it*) But you know, I always come up with these ******** up ideas and never do them >< ShadowedMoonlight Mary-sues make my soul cry.
