It's actually a mixture of all sorts of religious/spiritual/pagan rituals, including Christian, if I remember correctly. It was originally All Hallow's Eve, which was the night right before All Saints' Day. One practice was to chase away the evil spirits to make way for Christian Saints who were supposed to come and bless people the next day. Of course, there is a lot of other influences in it too. smile

We do all sorts of Korean stuff at home that we don't know the meaning to, though. XD We just do them because we're following tradition. Like eating soup to chase away evil spirits. In the Christian land, I'm not sure if there are any evil spirits...

October 31 is also Samhain (pronounced Sowen), a Wiccan Sabat, which might be what your religious leaders may be alluding to even though Wicca isn't the devil's worship. Halloween as it's known for now is just a day of getting free candy from your neighbors (as well as dolling it out) and watching scary movies.
