I'm not sure how many members here actually have tattoos, but I was wondering if anybody did.
My dog had to be put to sleep a month ago, and afterwards I suddenly had the urge to get a tattoo of him. I actually have a basic design, but I'm worried about getting it for a few different reasons.
I'm worried about if they hurt. One of my best friends is pushing me to get it (whe has quite a few tattoos herself) from her tattoo artist boyfriend, who she assures me will be very gentle if he does it. I know other people who got tattoos from him before they started dating, and I've heard nothing but good things so he would be my first choice. It's really the least of my worries.
I also live with my mom, who doesn't like tattoos. She's begged me all my teenage life to not get a tattoo, but I think this tattoo would be one of the ones she wouldn't hate so much, since it's of our sweet puppy. It was actually because she was watching Miami Ink the day before he died that I attribute to me wanting it, at least partially. This man was getting a tattoo of his girlfriend who had died before they could get married so that she would always be with him. Three days after his death I was still not coping well with it, and looking for any way to keep my dog with me forever. I was working in box office (I work at a movie theater) and I started drawing him on my hand. It made me so happy to be able to see his face, even if it was just a drawing... but obviously it didn't stay. Afterwards I realized I really wanted a tattoo of him so I could see his sweet face every day.
The way I work, I jokingly mentioned it to her a few times when she's said "Don't ever get a tattoo" for whatever reasons she finds, and she's just not seemed too thrilled with the idea. I don't really want to be kicked out of the house for a tattoo, but I don't even know for sure she'd do that since I got her "permission" to get a helix piercing. She didn't like the idea, but she wasn't about to kick me out for it. Some friends say I shouldn't worry about what my mom thinks or wants, but I'm living in her house and she can kick me out, while I have another place to go I don't want to ruin our relationship completely over a tattoo. They've also said she doesn't have to know, but I walk around half-naked often when I go downstairs. And the way my mom is, I swear she'd sense it if I got the tattoo. I don't want to lie to her, anyways, it just seems immature.
However, I do want to put it in a place where I can hide it for work and in case I need to for a future 'real' job. I don't want it super-huge, maybe the size of the palm of my hand. I really like the idea of putting it on my hip for various reasons, but I'm afraid it won't look good there due to my extra weight and if I ever lose or gain weight it getting screwed up. You can basically suggest any body part and I'd be able to rattle off a list of reasons for not putting it there.
Does anybody have any experience with tattoos in any way, and any suggestions? Also, if you have them feel free to post photos and such. I realize tattoos aren't everyone's cup of tea, they didn't used to be mine...though I've grown fonder of them. I've already bought a pendant to hold some of his ashes in that I can wear once I get a chain, but it just doesn't seem like enough to me...I just don't want to get a tattoo and regret my choice of location for it, or even getting it, or anything later so I'm trying to find out as much as I can about them. I also don't know if it sounds completely dorky to be so in love with your dog that you get a tattoo of him, although my boyfriend who doesn't like tattoos assures me this one would be alright with him and it doesn't sound dorky at all.

I have had no experience with tatoos, but have read up a lot on them and asked my friend who got one back in freshman year about it. I want at least 4-5 tats once I move out, only because I'm in the same perdicament you're in. (only most likely younger) My mom has told me "no tatoos while you live here" and i have yet to find a solution. : but I wishyou lots of luck in possibly getting your tatoo of your puppy. he's very cute in that picture. 4laugh heart

Well, I don't have a tattoo yet. It's still in the "thinking about it/saving for it" stage of the plan. I've had the concept in my head for quite a while, but every few months it changes just slightly. That's why I think it's a good idea to have a really long period of time to think about EXACTLY what you want/where you want it. On the other hand you may feel that you want it sooner to memorialize your dog. Either way it's really up to you, I just think you need to talk to your mom about it some more.

Since it's something so full of meaning instead of just a design I've made, I'm more confident in getting it. But I am still taking a long while to think about it.
I was able to describe the basic design to my friends and boyfriend, but I finally did a drawing of roughly what I'm wanting. I would describe it as being based off a picture of his face, though that's the biggest part I'm not sure about. I have three different photos I'm considering, I'm going to do rough designs of all of them and go with the best. And I wanted to have it set in a blue star. It's a very specific bright blue, I want it to be the same color as his collar. Then I want the star to have a black border.
After trying to describe it to my boyfriend, I ended up "drawing" this as an example. I used tracing paper to go over a photo of his face and then I tried my hardest to make a decent star sweatdrop

I haven't gone back and put in the colors I want or cleaned it up or anything yet.

Aw that design is really good! It's adorable.
I have a tattoo on my lower back, not because it's "hot" to have one there. But because there's not going to be a huge difference of fat on my lower back like there will be other places. My weight fluctuates so I didn't want to put it somewhere else where it would make a big difference. It's also a good location to hide the tattoo for my future 'real' job.
It has no color to it because if I do want it removed black can come out easier than colors since some colors have a bad reaction to the process they use to take it off. And I think faded color tattoos look gross.
But my tattoo means something to me. Even though it's just a simple out line of a star, it reminds me of my grandfather who passed away my junior year. He's the only person in my family that I love so it was really hard for me to lose him. I miss him like crazy but the tattoo helps me remember him because out of all his grandchildren I was his "star".
I'm thinking at a later date I might get my name wrapped around it in Korean since Hangul had a big part of my life when I took tae kwon do from one dojang for 4 years. My master and alot of the people at that dojang became my family and when I had to move a part of me died. I still to this day 3 years later miss them like crazy. I was taught to speak and write korean fluently while I was there and it's something I'm proud of, so I think I'm going to get a tattoo of it.
Meh, probably more than you wanted to know...but tadah!

Actually...I'm kinda glad someone put up a topic about this. I had been thinking about the same thing since I just got my upper ear cartilage pierced and are running out of things to pierce. lol I want a tattoo. And I think you getting one of your puppy would be cute. I don't know if I'd want to get one of my Mom, who passed 5 years ago... I am not much on tattoos with faces. But the one of your dog would be nice. I am thinking of one of a symbol or maybe a fox...or my name. As far as the pain...I have heard it really depends on where you get it.

@Kissing: That sounds really cool. I was so young when my grandfather died, but I loved him more than anybody else in my family. He wrote songs for me, none of the other grandkids got that. And the Korean thing sounds really cool, too. My friend suggested to me last night that around my tattoo, when I get it, or at the bottom of it I should put "Hi, I'm Mister" because that was a joke my friend and I always had about him. He was so sweet, if he spotted people he just wanted to be their friends and he'd always just push himself in the middle of things, so we joke that he's saying that to everybody in heaven sweatdrop
@Rosie: Thank you ^_^ I'm not quite sure yet. The design I did is about three inches tall, and I really like it that way... so it'll probably be that, maybe a little smaller depending on where I put it.
@Jinnari: Normally I'm not a huge fan of tattoos with faces, I wouldn't want one myself. Not of my grandfather or my father (my father died before I was born, but I somehow am a huge daddy's girl). But since it's a dog, it would be somewhat different. Plus, he's one of those things I took for granted as always being here, I always saw him. I've actually also considered getting a tattoo of a red panda, but I don't mind waiting for that 'til I get out of my mom's house.
My friend loves getting tattoos, she's spent over 24 hours getting work on one tattoo alone, and she has three. She used to only be able to do it as a way to relieve stress when she was angry, but now she says she doesn't really notice it, or that it's even tickled. The other day she showed me her new tattoo and was like "This is what you get to look forward to, the awkward, itchy stage!" She's gotten tattoos where I want mine, so hopefully it won't be that bad 'cause she never said it was.

I was going to get a tatoo for my 18th birthday of a scorpion but I wasn't sure where to put it, I wanted to put it on my breast, but I didn't want that when I wore a low cut shirt everyone would see it. I was thinking below it maybe, but I don't know if that would look right.

I was thinking below it maybe, but I don't know if that would look right. I considered on my breast, as that's right by my heart... or right at the top between my boobs where a lot of girls get chest pieces... but I don't want to not be able to wear anything slightly low-cut for any future jobs. I think tattoos that are pretty big that go up your side and partially under your breast or even ontp the side are totally hot. I've seen a girl with a pheonix tattoo like that and I want it so bad heart

I'd say go for it. Your hip sounds like it'd be the ideal place, despite your fears. There, it would be easy to hide from both your mother and any potential employers.
I don't have any tattoos yet, but I plan on getting the Goddess symbol on my ankle eventually. I'm just kinda poor and afraid of the pain sweatdrop

I'm just kinda poor and afraid of the pain sweatdrop I'm seriously considering there, but I'm also thinking about this one spot on my back... however, I think I have an ugly back so I'm not so sure because the location it would be in is right at the top of my butt/bottom of my back and since I neither have an amazing back or a** I'm worried about it looking dumb.
I'm afraid of the pain, but I want to get it done really bad. My friend gave me a $60 gift certificate to pay for the tattoo from the place I'm gonna get it, but my mom had sounded cool when I told her about wanting it and that I wanted to get it in December if I had scrounged up the money, but when I got the money she freaked out.

There are a lot of goddesses with a lot of symbols.
