Flowers At Your Feet
Flower power. You don't need window boxes or border gardens to spruce up your front yard with spring flowers. Just plant your favorite annuals in an old boot to set on the edge of a porch step or beside a welcome mat. Remove the lace from the boot or loosen it enough to allow the tongue to be pulled forward. Fill the bottom of the boot with a layer of pebbles or aquarium gravel to provide drainage. Then pack in a 2-inch layer of potting soil or loam.
Now fit in the root base of a small bunch of annual flowers (pansies, marigolds or impatiens work well for this project). Gently pack more soil around and on top of the roots.
Remember to water the flowers regularly (unlike those that are planted in the ground, these blooms cannot draw moisture from the surrounding soil).
