i have four fish tanks in my room containing several drifferent fish including 2 mollies, 2 plecos, 2 oscars, and a goldfish. One of my oscars just became ill with hole in the head and i have been enlightened with just how important variety is in my fishes food, i also met someone who gives thier guppys paprika to show thier colors better and i was wondering if the same would be safe for my mollies. i would like to start my sick oscar on vitamins and i was told that if the store didnt have any, to crush up regular pills into thier food, i dont know how much would be safe and i wont try that idea until i know what is, everybody says that your fish should be fed but not overfed, and that variety is important, i need to know what a good amount of food is on a daily scheduale, for instance i feed my oscars pleco wafers, bloodwroms, sticks, real worms, grasshoppers, and other frozen fish foods but i dont know how much of each should be fed in a given week, and yes now that ive made diet changes and widened my oscars range of food he has been steadily proggressing towards his perfectly healthy self

whats appropriate to feed my fish daily?

The other day i came across a site that claimed to have the best explanation for how to cure hole in head rot but I dont remember how i found it. As for feeding your fish, Oscars should NEVER be fed "feeder fish" from a pet store and if you feed frozen food or other live food make sure it is of high quality otherwise they can have diseases in the food. For all my fish I bought a thing called "TetraMenu" it has breakfast lunch, dinner and snack flake foods and gives good variety. I dont think your oscar should be eating pleco wafers since those are usualy just algae and I wouldn't mess with crushing up regular pills or feeding paprika to your fish.

If your pet store doesnt have medication see if they have aquarium salt and you can add the recomended ammount of that (on the box) to your tank and you should also increase your water changes, this is what i've always done and the only time I have lost alot of fish was to neon tetra disease (which is un treatable), I've never had a fish with hole in head rot though so I suggest getting the medication but not making up your own from tylenol or whatever you have in your bathroom.

I have oscars myself. I found that when one of them get startled ( loud, sudden noises like firecreackers or sudden light changes like a light switch on in the middle of the night) he flips out and charges running into powerheads rock or even hitting the top of the aquarium he ends up gouging the top of his head.
If that is the case and AQUARIUM salt and unless you have snails a little extra won't hurt. It helps speed up healing and helps them produce more of that slime that protects thier skin (scales?) so well.
If it is hole in the head then get medicine from the nearest petstore and treat RIGHT away! It can be lethal if not treated. It seems you are feeding them okay. I feed mine Hikari Cichlid Staple food 2 - 3 X a day depending on size of oscars.
I also give them bloodworms, Nightcrawlers (put then in water first to poop the dirt out) an occasional algea pellet (is okay in moderation, not daily) any frozen foods are good as long as they don't get frostbitten.

They get feeders from me but to do that you need a tank just for the feeders. They need to be quaranteed for two to three weeks to make sure they are not sick.
