I am going to start playing World of Warcraft, all my friends have it. So now i've decided to get it too, I used to play a Ranger on EQ, and have had alot of experience playing MMORPG's, so i was just wondering, what the smartest choice to start with is for a character.

It all depends on your playing style and preffered abilities.

Since you use to play Ranger, you'd probably like Hunter. But for most beginners that gets into WoW, the best class for them (IMO) would probably be Shaman. Shaman's have good strength, great mana, good spell casters, can heal, and have mad Damage Per Second (DPS) spells or in other terms, the "Totems". All and all, to me Shamans are for beginners since they're so powerful. They're only on one side though and it's the Horde (though that'll change in the expansion...)

For a beginner, I'd say hunter or warrior. Hunters are pure EZ mode, as they have a pet that can tank & do additional DPS, & their skills are all mostly instant cast non-channeled spells that cost little mana. You can pretty much kill non-stop on a hunter.
Warrior is a bit more complicated, since you don't have a pet to help share the dirty work, & soloing is a bit hard if you don't keep your gear up to date.
Myself, I started off with a warlock & priest & loved them both (they're still my favorite classes).

I nearly always play a priest. My priest is now lv 60 so now I'm working on a hunter(orc) and a druid(elf)
My girlfriend is used to playing a mage so she has started a mage.
I can't wait till the expansion. Can't wait to play the new races ...

I strongly suggest you playing a hunter. It probably is similar to EQ's ranger, making starting easier, and is the easiest stating class in the game. And no, warriors are not a simple starting class like most games.

Leveling a pally stinks. Hunter or mage, they're easy to level. Mages are more needed in end-game, but tranquil shot hunters are neccessary as well.
Don't roll warrior or rogue, you'll be hitting yourself later unless you have buddies that will help gear you out.

I would say take on a hunter, since you started off as a ranger from EQ. You can always do the "send out pet/ranged damage" thing, and it'll die fast. However, hunters can get expensive later on, especially when you need the good ammo. I highly suggest not going with a priest. I leveled one to 60 as my first character, and that was not easy (I leveled her holy/disc). You also can't solo most elites...and farming for mats is not easy. (As I'm farming for Hide of the Wild...) Most classes are easy to level no matter what. As long as you keep your gear halfway up to date and know the limitations it shouldn't be too hard.

to Simply put, if your looking to start, Start with the Hybrid of them all, a Druid. Get a feel for Warriors, Rogues and even casters all in one character, thats what I did, and it worked great

I wouldn't go with Druid because you will lose money really fast. Although it is a good way of teaching you what you like best it has a lot of skills you have to buy in the long run.

(How does being a druid cause you to lose money?) Speaking as a person with lots of alts whose only 60 is a druid, I would say start with a druid, get it to 20 so you can get cat form, then see which form you enjoy most. Cat, bear or caster. Then, if it's bear, go warrior, if cat, go rogue, if caster, go priest if you like to heal, or mage or lock if you like to use wrath or moonfire. If you want to be sronger but able to heal, maybe try a pally, if none of that suits you, try the hunter, or you can keep the druid if you find you like it.
