Hey guys (and gals),

I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to stop turtling or curling up behind your blocks and flinching.

remember that the best way not to get hit is to end it as fast as possible (run away or make the first strike)

I can't say there is an easy way it just takes work practice will get you used to it. Try haveing some one stand just out of reach and throw punches at you watch there elbows don't block just watch the elbows will give away what arm is punching and also what punch is coming. The elbow will move first and it moves slower than the hand so it helps you read there movements. By watching how it moves you will learn that strait punches and other punches move different and the elbow tells you before it happens. This may help you a bit you will know whats coming before they swing.

there are various ways to do it. wolfs way is good. some other ways are just to have a sparring parter through various techniques at you and you try to block them. remember you have to be fully trusting in your techniques. if it didnt work them martial artists wouldnt teach it. so try to get into the mindset that if you know it will work then you dont need to be worried. it is natural for the body to tension up. but keep it loose as well. also like i said you need to have a good sparring partner. someone you trust. a best friend a sensei someone to that nature. someone that you know wont hurt you. that does help. once you get to the point where you are relaxed with a sensei or a friend then you will be relaxed if you need it in real life or in a tournament or wherever you take your martial arts. if you are a beginner then dont worry. skill comes with time. if you are advanced then you just havent had enough time. im a 3rd degree black belt in ninjutsu, i still make mistakes. all blackbelt mean is that you are an advaced beginner. so dont worry if you mess up sometimes. you will get it. if you have anymore questions please feel free to pm me.

Well no offense to mindsage, but at times there simply aren't times you can end things quickly so learning not to turtle is a good habit to get over especially if you enter tournaments. I remember watching a tournament when I was a lower rank and I saw people turtling and I thought to myself "Why do people do that? It isn't going to help so why do it?" I was having the same problem myself, but you just have to practice and get over it. Keep in mind not to do it and force yourself to get use to it.
