I've come to an official conclusion today. Hakoda is Pakku's illegitimate child 3nodding . That's the real reason Kana left, and kept her necklace all those years. She loved him and didn't want to disgrace him. It has nothing to do with Katara's culture-bashing ideas. Look, I even made a dorky comparisons sheet sweatdrop xd .

Quote:
"She really didn't have a major reason to leave, especially not to the other side of the world, unless she was afraid of the OMG!SCANDAL." ~Troppi

On the argument that Kana is their mother’s mother: Everything official on her says their paternal grandmother, meaning Hakoda’s mother.

On the necklace:
Quote:
"I can see Kana giving it to her daughter-in-law as a present. I don't think they have the whole "carve a necklace for your fiancé" in the Southern Tribe. After all, wasn't Katara surprised when Yugoda asked her who she was engaged too? I don't think she'd be confused about that if she knew that it was a betrothal necklace.

The Northern and Southern tribes are pretty different. I'm pretty sure they have different customs about marriage. (: " ~Troppi

It's the keeping the necklace part that I can't figure it out. If she left for the reason Katara implies she did (I really hate Katara and what she did in that episode, so excuse me if I must mention that every time), there was no reason to keep it...or keep it a secret from her family like Katara says she did.

Quote:
Exactly. "Hey, I'm made 'cause my family is making me marry someone I don't want to, so I'm going to run away! But ooh! He carved me a shiny necklace! Gee, I think I'll keep this even though it's obviously a symbol of the marriage I'm supposedly running away from!" ~Troppi, Further Anti-Katara's Arguement Arguement

What about you guys? Do you buy Katara's explination? Do you buy ours? Do you have your own?

It's a very interesting idea. Though I don't think we'll ever hear about Kanna and Pakku's relationship in the show again, since it's sole purpose was to show Pakku that he was supposedly pwned by his own beliefs, hence, Katara could learn waterbending.

But if the relationship ever comes up in the show again, it's not impossible (due to the fact that it's a kid's show, it's not entirely likely, though Avatar has surprised us a little at times).

Plus, it always did seem weird to me that Kanna kept the necklace if he was supposedly nothing to her, ya'know?

This is one of my fun theories that I don't think will ever really be solved, but I want to see how many people I can get to agree with me anyway 3nodding .

It seems plausible. I wouldn't be too surprised if that was the truth since Avatar has been surprising me lately.^^''

That's an idea. It sounds likely. Pakku did seem to like Katara's grandmother, and it hints at a past relationship. It is going to be one of those mysteries that Avatar probably will not cover. xp

Ohh, a royal Katara bashing. She might be my favorite character, but your theory sounds like a good one.

It's not bashing of her so much as what she did that episode ^^.

Thank you ^^. I really like it, and may write a short one shot about it sometime.

Wait, what did Katara do in that episode that pissed you off so much?
PostPosted: Tue Aug 29, 2006 10:35 pm

Told another culture that their cultures was wrong. I hate that. It does promote awarness and acceptance of other cultures. Just because you may personally disagree with the way things are doesn't make it wrong.

Well... I think if I was trying to help save the world and someone told me they wouldn't help me b/c culture discriminates against women... I'd be pretty ticked too... and touchy subjects usually set people off. Obviously Katara has had to deal w/ sexism before. Sokka's own attitude had to be learned from somebody.

I dunno, I was kinda surprised and disturbed to see Katara's claws come out like that. I woulda thought she would've been more submissive...

I guess you're right. Katara probably should've just waited until they left and then had Aang teach her. I mean, he's not going to forget everything he learned or there'd be no point in learning.

I haven't seen the episode in a while, but I just remembered something. While the gender roles seemed to be cultural... don't the leaders tell Katara that the teacher is the one who refuses to teach women? I guess since that guy is their best teacher they aren't going to argue w/ him about his traditional bias if they don't have to. If all the boys suddenly died, I could see them approaching him about teaching the women...

Ah, I'm rambling. Sorry. Good night.
PostPosted: Thu Aug 31, 2006 9:31 pm

Oh, real quick.

What I mean is that the leaders seemed to say to Katara "Hey, we'd love to help you improve your bending, but it's not up to us, it's up to the teacher. Sorry, but we aren't going to tick him off by making him teach you b/c he'd likely refuse to teach anyone period & then we'd be screwed."

I always assumed that Kana kept the necklace to remember where she grew up (she may have disagreed with traditions, but that doesn't mean she hated her home) and she kept her past from her family because she just felt uncomfortable talking about it. But you may have something here. ^_^
