I'm surprised we don't already have a topic for this, since it's been brought up before. Well, I finally read the book. I raised myself on the movie, and for years didn't even know a book existed. eek My judgement:
I quite liked it, though I'm not sure if I liked the movie better. As with Tolkin's Lord of the Rings, I really love the story, but don't as much care for the way it was written. The only flaw I found with The Last Unicorn was that it seemed overwritten in places, which is a great pet peeve of mine. sad
I thought the movie said everything as clearly as the book, but with fewer lines. But that may be because I've seen the movie about 245 times, so I might have just let the movie seep in more than the book. I only read it once. And of course, the movie had to leave some scenes out, such as the scene at Hagsgate, which I quite enjoyed. 3nodding
Overall, I can't wait to check the book out of the library again and re-read it. But I'll simply never know what my view would have been had I not already been exposed to the movie.

I feel the same way as you do. Sometimes that's the trouble of being exposed to the film before the book. Although I'm not really sure if I wish to read it again. At least not any time soon.

I haven't had the chance to read or see it. Though I have read Tamsin, which I enjoyed. I suppose I'll have to go and search for it now.
The only movie I've felt that way about was Narnia. I really just didn't like the LotR books or movies. =/

I'm kinda like you to a point-I was raised on the movie and found out about the book later. However, I really like the book. It's been a while since I've read it so I do want to re-read it again to see how I feel now about it.
Did ya'll hear they're making a live action movie of it? It won't be out for ages though. sad I hope it'll be good, I have high hopes for it so I really don't want it to reek as bad as a pair of unwashed gym socks.

I actually have never seen the movie, I've only read the book, and it is one of my alltime favorites. And a book has to be something special to be that. I've loved it since i was much younger then I am now, And I do believe that The Last Unicorn is one of the greatest pieces of Fantasy written, Mainly because I can read it to kids, and they understand and enjoy it, and my father, who is a bit elderly, can read it an enjoy it as well. It's one of those fantasy experiences that can be enjoyed by almost all age groups.

I most definitely love it. It's tied with The Plague Dogs as my favorite book ever (as far as I can choose favorites). The movie is also one of my favorites but I like the book more. It's one of those books that I read when I'm feeling down, and it always cheers me up. Though I haven't read it the whole way through in years.
I've also read Tamsin, and really enjoyed it. There are a few other Peter S. Beagle books I've started but never finished. I just couldn't get into them.

Yeah the movie is never as good as the book, though it allows the reader to get a better idea of what the character and places look like!

I thought the book was incredibly lyrical, and found the movie somewhat lacking by comparison.
Anymore, if I know a movie is based on a book, I try to find the book before I view the movie. Conversely, there are books based on movies and I'd rather see the movie first. I like knowing how the original story source is re-interpreted.

I read it. I didn't really like it. I mean, the story itself was great, but I can't STAND the authors writing style. Its too.... flowy? Flowery? Something along those lines. I read it when I was 8, managed to struggle through it, and never read it again.

Okay, I bit the bullet and decided to reread Beagle's classic to see if my perspective had changed. Oddly enough I loved reading it this second time around. I'm not sure why...
I had bought an edition of it that also included the short story sequel "Two Hearts." I feel I would have liked this follow-up better if it was written the way of the original novel and not the first person from the perspective of that girl. I dunno, but I found her a little annoying. Still the ending was poignant and bittersweet.
