My name's Larc, I'm and aspiring concept artist ( for fantasy characters) and am both a writer and an artist. So, lets get one thing straight...I am not here for nicey-nice comments on my work. I WANT TO IMPROVE. Art is a damn cutthroat career and niceness is not the tool to getting better. I have a lot of improvements to make, and I know I have to push a lot further before my art is truly great, which is what I aspire to be. CRITIQUES ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED. Idiocy, however, will not be tolerated. Random comments without reason will be ignored because it didn't take so much thought to write them- and it's the thought that counts! So lets be intelligent? ( This is an F4 gallery!~ ) NEWS!Some stuff is finally up. There is a lot more to come, but that will be uploaded later! Recent Art Newest piece!! I love the way it came out. My favorite part I think is the wings. This picture is done entirely with markers ( save the acrylic spatter). LINK ^--- Something that I hoped I'd be proud of..but really don't like. LINK!^ --- My first Acrylic painting. Pretty nice if I do say so. Link!<-- a nice hour long sketch done in class. It came out rather well, if I do say so. Link!<--- Just to keep in shape Link! <----free commish. ( Yeah, I know about the right hand, but the form wasn't really paid attention to. I wanted to get it in before Christmas >< )) Link!<--- Just a class sketch I thought was neat. Kind of a spin off of this: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a210/SemiDodongo/LetusbeDruids.jpgLink!<-- Concept sketch for a RP. Featured!<-- A hint of architecture! The tiles took forever, and came out very well.. hence why I'm so proud of them > More to come!

It's some interesting stuff.... but a little on the boring side. The bottom two have a recycled anime feeling about them. You'd get more attention by showing off the first one to potential clients or schools. You've got some good skills, but the selection of work on your DA site is a little narrow.

Really? What makes it narrow? I showcase many different poses, some are detailed and some aren't.
And how is anime recycled? Every anime artist has their own style, therefore it cannot be recycled. It's simply an artist doing their art. I don't consider myself so much an anime artist as I have my own style which is more realistic.
The first one is a head shot. Not as detailed as it could be, but it has nice design and a cleaness about it that makes it charming. However, you think that my bottom two ( which are very much more detailed including more of the body and it's anatomy), are lesser works than a simple headshot?
That's fine. It's your opinion. I thank you for your comment anyway. ^^!

The content and subjects are are bland on those bottom two. So you made figures in different poses, that's great- but are they done well? Hmmm.... not really. If this is a portfolio to get into an art program think about including a wider breadth of content. If this is a portfolio to show a client so you can illustrate some cover work for them- um... needs work.

hmmm...
How are they not well done? What's so wrong with them to say that they are not well done? Do you know the story behind them? Did you think that they may not be just pictures, but are accompanied by something else? I stated that those were illustrations from a role play I am currently involved in, so the meaning may not be so clear to someone who is not involved in the rp, but that does not make them bad. Use your imagination. That's one of the perposes of art, anyway.
And they are not breadth pieces, they are concentration. I'm concentrating on character design. I chose to place the pictures I do have on my Deviant Art to showcase my ability in character design.
I might not have heavy action poses in my art now , but that is not to say that I have no skill and what I DO have isn't well done. Action poses will come later, when I have free time. I am a commission artist after all, and those are pictures of what people have requested in me. So I must not be so bad.
And plus, art isn't all action. If it were, so many people would not be able to relate to it. I like to focus on the emotion of the piece, which is why my art has a lot of feeling, even if there isn't so much action yet.
If you want to tell me that my art needs work, be specific. What about it needs work? What would make it more interesting? What's so clumsy in my other pictures? Don't just say it's not well done. That doesn't help me at all.
Thanks again for your imput.

Okay, if you want to argue it- but I warned you! mrgreen
Just because someone gives you money for artwork doesn't mean it's good. It also doesn't mean you're a pro. All it meant was they liked it and compensated you.
Anime, RPG's and such: the content is boring and repetitive- I'm very familiar with them in fact. If you would READ the words on the screen you will note that I did not say anything about your ability to create artworks.
The whole "I paint what I feel" thing doesn't work in the real world. If you're the glamorous all-knowing comission artist you say, then you would know this- doesn't matter how you feel, the client wants results. If I had $10,000 in my pocket to pay an artist why should I hire you over someone like Brom or Keith Parkinson? Or just do it myself?
Let's talk character design: I see 4, and two look like rip-offs of popular video games. You need a wider breadth of design work. For character design you'll be asked to design the next Freddy Krueger and after lunch asked to design the newest stuffed animal for the "Blues Clues' advert package. I don't see that versatility.
Looking at the first picture, Ms Spades impresses me. It says "talent in the rough, hire as apprentice, 6 months training needed", while the other ones say "typical 15 year old that likes video games and made a B in art class."
Now let's talk technique. Since your the business savvy commission artist then you won't mind producing work better then Brom or Keith Parkinson, or maybe Donato Giancola. Know what? This work isn't. It's beginner work, average materials usage. I see you like watercolor- but why use it like you're using Photoshop? Why should I hire your watercolor and composition skills over someone like Alan Lee?
This is what a portfolio is for- clients compare choices. Who are some of your clients?

Okay, I guess that's good construct for the future.
But I am seventeen years old. I'm not a master watercolorist or artist YET. But I am trying damn hard > Right now I aim to be the best I can be NOW as I gain experiance. Of COURSE you'd choose an artist who has years of experiance under their belt over an eager teen who is just starting out. I'm NOT arrogant. I EXPECT that. I'm not pro by any means, but I'm PROUD of the commissions I get, because I shows me that I'm making progress.
Okay..so I need to expand my horizons. Alright, I'll think about that. But please keep in mind that I am NOT a professional artist. I'm WORKING to be one and am just happy that people are commissioning me along the way.
And why can't I paint what I love once and a while? I do love videogames and I am a writer. I see no faults in illustraiting my stories and ideas. I don't plan to be a concept artist for kids items or movies, I want to bring to life characters from a script, maybe a videogame in the making? Something creative from fantasy. THAT is what I draw. I want to create what you would never find in life and still have people relate. With that, I AM painting what I'm feeling, and either way, emotions are the most important part of art.
Thanks again for being so helpful. I'll keep what you said in mind, and try out some new things!

rolleyes
Art isn't just about emotions- it's about communication. This is where you're confusing yourself. What you think you are communicating through your artwork isn't neccesarily what ends up on the other side.
Not arrogant huh? "I am a commission artist after all, and those are pictures of what people have requested in me. So I must not be so bad. "
You presented yourself as an accomplished prefessional and you recieved the treatment as one. Like I said, I warned ya! mrgreen

Well, I stand by that statement O.O. I must not be SO bad, or people wouldn't order from me. It's not arrogance , I deserve to take pride in my work xP.
And I do believe it's about emotions. Communication includes emotions. If my picture sparks something in someone, I'm happy with that. How do you think artist pull of subtlety?
Give me a break. Are you really just trying to make me feel bad? If so, take yourself elsewhere. I can't imagine you'd be giving me such harsh advice ( I use that term loosely) out of the kindness of your heart ><.

Okay, I´m sorry, but can I say something? Garkudian, drakkenmuerte is trying to give you some advice. If you were unclear on the concept in the beginning, you could have just asked to be a bit more specific. That way, an arguement could be prevented, and you can get some advice. You should excpect criticism if you´re gonna ask for advice. What´s going on is argueing on the internet, which is one of the most unnecessary things you should do. To use a messed up but true analogy, argueing on the internet is like the special olympics: even if you win, you´re still retarded.

ummmm O.O...I didn't want an argument. Honestly, I expect constructive criticism..But with intelligence. He just compared me to people twenty years older than I am. That's not intelligence, that's just cruel. He pointed out nothing specific about my work..even when I ASKED. I never wanted for an argument, ElDot. He was just persistant on discrediting me.
But honestly, it's over now. No rehash? I just want to showcase my artwork.

I liked it. No harsh feelings over that. I´m completely unfamiliar with manga and anime as it is, so I wouldn´t be the guy to ask in termns of uniqueness. The portraits good, and you use good anatomy on the men. I just don´t get the bird thing but...there you go.

hahah It's a scene from a role play I'm currently involved in. The birds are mounts to the red-haired man holding the crystal ball. As I said, those who are not involved in the role play may be a little lost, haha. Thank you. And you know, I don't expect everyone to like my artwork, I just expect people to be civilized and intelligent. Thank you for your critique.
