I am having a Birthday party for my son Garrett's first birthday heart this Sunday, and invited both families. We love our families and get along with them wonderfuly (seperately.) When there together they don't mingle well. We invited a couple of friends too to help that but I don't have high hopes. We usualy do seperate gigs because of this, but a First is special. So off I march to the firing squad. Any advice? Or hints as to get them to mingle or enjoy themselves or anything? sweatdrop

We've done both, though the mixed parties were usually when the kids were small.

Our familes don't always mingle well, either, but in our experience, the occasion is the focus, and there are always things to talk about.

Let your child be the star, and you'll be so busy chasing him and doing cake, etc, that you won't have much time to think about how well everyone is getting along.

Good luck, and happy birthday to the little guy!

First off, Happy 1st Birthday Garrett!

As for the family, it's sweet that you want to make sure that both sides are happy, but really there's not much you can do to make them get along. Having two events isn't hard when they're young, but when they get older and want to have it somewhere else, it can get costly! I say just let him be the focus and surely for one day they can put the differences aside to get along. Enjoy your sweet baby's day!

Ok I think I will make it. I will be too busy with cooking and hosting to notice anything anyway, right? Right? Wish me luck! sad

Thank you everyone for your help.

I took some excedrin before the party and wa sable to avoid the headache that I usualy get with these functions.

Garrett did need some soothing right after everyone arrived. He wouldn't let anyone hold him. Then after I got him some juice and set him on the floor, he did real well. Everyone was eating and so he was able to aproach them on his own terms.
He was held by almost everyone. But he had to instigate it. he didn't want to be handed to anyone. Once everyone figured that out we just let him crawl to everyone on his own terms. It was so cute he would crawl over climbe up the pant legs and reach up. Then when he was done he would squirm and reach down when he wanted to go. I think the initial hubub of everyone at once scared him a little.
He got startled when he grabed his cake. Everyone laughed and then he looked up realising he was the center of attention, and cryied. after his sisy took his hand to lick it off and then offerd him his own had he warmed up to digging in to his cake.
It turns out that I was worried abluot the mingling for no reason the only people that showed up from My family were my parrents and my Uncle Steve. Noone else from my family came. My husbands family all showed and our friends, even the ones whos priemy, Connar, just came home came. I'm disappointed that my family didn't even call to tell me they wouldn't show. Oh well we had a great time and so did the little man.

Thank you for all the help.
