The Significance of Episode 1 to Heero/Relena

I kept this separate from the other 1+R thread since this will feature a lot of screen caps and discusses Episode 1 in particular. Let’s get started!

The Shooting Star

User Image

As you can see, Relena’s first glimpse of Heero is of him as a shooting star. He’s in his Gundam at the time and she has no idea how the object she sees in the shuttle will forever change her life. Kind of amusing, isn’t it? She’s looking at something potentially life shattering and doesn’t even realize it. Still, she does wonder what it is but I doubt she knows how closely she’ll be interacting with this ‘shooting star.’

Meeting at the Beach

User Image

Relena’s first encounter with the ‘shooting star.’ He’s unconscious and very mysterious. She only knows him as a soldier yet helps out. You’ve got to love her for that. Besides, I think she sees him as the first form of excitement in her sheltered life. She has no idea that her sheltered life isn’t real, that her real ‘royal’ life has more excitement than a normal girl can bear.

Awakening

User Image

He awakens and all hell breaks loose. How traumatic is it if you’ve helped out a guy and the first thing he does when he wakes up is act like a military maniac? His first words to her in the series are “Did you see?” She’s confused and replies with “See what?” A unique way of meeting, I assure you. I’d be traumatized at what he does after. He tries to blow himself up! She helps him and he tries suicide! He then hijacks the ambulance she called. An ordinary girl would be horrified and screaming but Relena is just dazed and calm about it. She has nerves and grace and it shows in this first meeting. I guess Heero’s reaction is one of the reasons he’s often compared to Sousuke Sagara (Full Metal Panic). I can see Sousuke trying to blow himself up to hide a military secret just like Heero. Then again, Kaname (also from Full Metal Panic) would probably react differently from Relena and bash Sousuke on the head.

Introduction to Nobody in Particular

User Image

This is better explained by the scene in the Episode Zero manga which happens before the series. In Episode Zero, a young Relena meets a boy who resembles a young Heero and could possibly have been Heero. He is shunned by her classmates but she yearns to befriend him. Sadly, he leaves before she can introduce herself to him. Relena’s Episode Zero is set in AC 191 and she is 11 years old. This is what she says after realizing the boy is gone:

“I wish... I’d at least asked his name. This is how I should have done it. (extends hand) My... My name is Relena Darlian. What’s yours...? What’s yours...?”

It’s the same situation but with a younger Relena. Maybe she recognized him as that boy from long ago? Maybe she still wants to befriend him after all these years? To atone for not defending him against her cruel classmates?

First Class Together at St. Gabriel Institute

User Image

Relena recognizes Heero from their meeting at the beach. He introduces himself and the teacher asks him to sit next to Relena. Relena greets him but he is cold. This is a stark contrast to the panic he expressed the day before. One would think he’d be nervous upon ending up next to the girl who may or may not know his military secret. For all we know, he’s just trying to look calm and is panicking within. Maybe her greeting made him ill at ease? Made him wonder why she’s being so nice to someone who she saw hijack an ambulance? Made him wonder why she’s being nice to someone who could be a criminal? My hypothesis is that Relena is curious about him and sees something good in him. “He’s only a boy,” she had said when she first saw his face when he awoke. Perhaps she doubts one so young of being capable of anything horrible. After all, she is the same age. Mind you, this shows she’s really not a normal girl. A normal girl would have called the police and alerted the military. She has a certain unbreakable calm about her. Throughout the series, you never see her panic.

The Tearing of the Invitation

User Image

This is a pivotal point in Gundam Wing and a moment every fan remembers. He takes her on a roller coaster of emotions. I’m betting she approached him nervously and was crushed when he tore the invite. Still, he shows a bit of compassion and wipes her tears away before issuing his death threat. As I mentioned, he’s trying to send a message for her to stay away. The fact that he wiped away her tears shows that what Dr. J says about him is true. He is a kind boy deep down but the military training hides it although it comes out once in a while. I’ve only seen a bit of the Japanese version but Hikaru Midorikawa’s voice gives Heero a subtle expressiveness that English voice actor Mark Hildreth couldn’t provide. Throw away any thoughts of Heero as emotionless because he isn’t and it shows in this scene. If he’s capable of making Relena feel nervousness, sadness, joy and shock in rapid succession, don’t you think he has a lot of experience with making people feel emotion? If he can make people feel, can’t we assume that he’s felt a lot in his life too?

And here’s something extra you should see from the end of the Endless Waltz manga:

Scan 1: Heero as Relena’s bodyguard

Scan 2: End of EW

Scan 3: One last ‘shooting star’

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v112/miss_mariemaia/mangaendEW3.jpg

Gundam Wing begins with Relena seeing Heero as a shooting star. Endless Waltz ends with her watching a shooting star with Heero. It’s kind of funny. The ending is the same as the beginning. It’s just like how Heero tore Relena’s invitation in Episode 1 only to have her tear up his letter in Episode 49. I guess “The Shooting Star She Saw” changed her life forever.

So what are your thoughts? I’ve watched Episode 1 at least ten times and I’ve never gotten bored with it. There’s a lot to see especially in the 1 + R relationship. So what are your opinions? I’ve analyzed the roots of 1 + R in Episode 1 as best I could. I’d really love to hear your opinions on the matter.

I think probably there was something about her that attracted Heero, from first meeting. Because of her calm on the beach, how she just lifts his helment and tries to help him. If I were him, I probably would grasp onto any bit of kindness. Unfortunately, Heero can't allow himself this little bit of weakness.

If you guys read Epsiode Zero manga - Relena Storys you probbly will understand how she was protray in the seires , before she ever meet Heero she was a shy little girl , she never spoke even one word to her so called group of Friends more like her kiss up firends becasue she a rich and a prime minster daughter . Her adopted mother said that she wish that Relena could talk to her friends now and then in the manga .

She became more open when she meet heero , He was the one that change her life for the better good , not only for her self but for the people of both the earth and the space colonies .

I really dont know why people think she was a spoiled brat , to me she just like an normal teenager going thur in life , if people read the epsiode zero manga am sure you will under stand what Relena has went thur most of her life .

I am so glad i read Espiode Zero because to tell you the truth i was very confused the first time i watch Gundam Wing , untill i keep watching Reruin and start re reading the manga then i finally pick up epsiode zero.

I remember seeing the first episode of Wing and wondering why Relena introduces herself to someone when he can't hear her. It was only until later that I read episode Zero and went 'Oh'.

In episode six (or was it five?), before Relena leaves for Earth again, Doctor J tells her that he wanted Relena to remember that Heero used to be like her, a kind person (don't quote me on this because my memory's rusty). If, coming from a third person point of view, Heero was kind, there's no reason that the emotions aren't there. He probably just supresses them under his training.

It's not unlikely that Heero cares as well. It's open to interpretation.

Please don't quote my whole post sweatdrop
Ok, the one thing about Relena that i didnt like, not hate, didnt like, about her was that scene were she says (extends hand) My... My name is Relena Darlian. What’s yours...? What’s yours...?"
She has a creapy and an "im going to kill everyone" type of expression on her face. What the heck was with that?

*resurrects old thread* Well I have a new view on Episode 1 since the graphic novels... She doesn't introduce herself to air and actually gets to tell him her name. But bleh to that... I do prefer the lonely and mysterious air that points towards Episode Zero when she introduces herself to no one in particular.

I don't know I think that Heero definately has feelings for Relena he just doesn't show them because that'd be a weakness. I think he was somewhat attracted to her from the beginging and it developed more so as the series went on.
On that bit about her ripping up Heero's letter I think it was kind of a payback for him ripping up the invitation. Since the letter probably meant alot to him and the invitation meant alot to her at the time.

I have no doubt that Heero was a kind hearted person with feelings...it is kind of frustrating to hear that he is "emotionless" especially after having read episode zero. When Relena finds him, I think that he is simply taken aback at his circumstances. When he ends up next to her at school, I doubt that he really worried about her "knowing his secret," he was probably more concerned to avoid her for her sake than for his. He knew her getting involved with him would only be bad for her safety.

I really liked Relena's introduction scene. I got the feeling that she had immediately felt that there was something special about Heero and was almost sad to have had such a short (though dramatic) encounter. Also, it has already been made obvious he is a dangerous person and her personality automatically makes her concerned for him. I think she would have felt that way about anyone, not just Heero.

I loved the invitation scene...however, it made me wonder. If Heero was so secretive and worried about keeping himself discreet, why threaten to kill the most popular girl in school in front of a large crowd? Wouldn't it have been better to simply walk away from her and not respond? Or say no? That would have seemed normal and raised little questions...or maybe the bystanders didn't hear him??? Or he could have moved schools and disappeared like he does throughout the rest of the series. Personally, I think it was purely for the viewer's benefit. (Gotta get people interested, right?) How boring if he had just walked away. This ending for the first episode left everyone in awe....which is why we keep watching (damn you anime!!!!!!! scream rofl )

I find Heero and Relena's relationship very interesting just because at first they seem so opposite each other, but in the final episode you see just how much alike they really are. It makes you keep watching, that's for sure!

Heero is, in every way, a kind person with feelings. In fact, that's something Odin had encouraged in him. However, on orders from the Barton Foundation (actually, from Dekim himself), Dr J was forced to train Heero into an emotionless soldier. Dekim didn't like that Heero had regret over killing the civilian girl by mistake.

However, that regret is one thing that Heero never loses. When he makes the mistake of killing Noventa, he tracks down his family and seeks their verdict for his actions. He saves Relena from the falling building, despite thinking he should have killed her for knowing his secret. He never brings himself to do it the first time because he may see her as an innocent civilian who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Later, when he's fighting with several mercenaries on Earth, he purposefully moves the battle away from a town that hasn't been evacuated once he sees civilians running away from the fighting MS.

Dekim's plans to make the perfect soldier to take over in Operation Meteor's aftermath failed in every way during the series. So, he revamped his plan and tried a different method later, by using a girl he claimed to be Treize's daughter. That also failed, ending in his death.
