Around 3 years ago, back in the good old days of the anime subforum, a thread began floating around titled "Let's Talk: Akito Sohma". Started by a regular Fruits Basket fan, the thread surrounded the initial and infamous question, "So what's the deal with Akito? Why is he/she so mean to the other Juunishi?" From there, fans, skeptics, and critics alike flocked to the thread to defend, accuse, and question Akito's motives.
It gained a lot of popularity, before eventually fading into the depths of the anime subforum to be lost forever. That is of course until the lovely C chan, Ahiko, and myself brought it back. Brand new thread, moderators, and attitude.
Then gaia ate it.. again. And thanks to school and work, we left it that way for some time.
But we're back! After some exciting plot twists, new revelations surrounding our celebrity, and with only one chapter left in the manga, we're giving this thread our all!
'introduction'
Who is Akito Sohma?
Akito is the head of the Sohma family. As God to the Juunishi, Akito does not have a zodiac form. Possessive and quick-tempered, yet beautifully tragic, she is an enigma.
Let's Talk: Akito Sohma
Got a question about our star of the hour? A complaint? An opinion you'd like to express to the Fruits Basket community? Do you want to declare your unwavering devotion for her? Or utter distaste for her? Have some fanart or fanfiction you'd like to share? All are welcome here at Let's Talk: Akito Sohma.

I haven't read the manga, but do they treat Akito's being female like a secret until it's revealed in a big deal? I'm just wondering how that's treated [if at all] in the manga since Akito is male in the anime.

-Ryoko- I haven't read the manga, but do they treat Akito's being female like a secret until it's revealed in a big deal? I'm just wondering how that's treated [if at all] in the manga since Akito is male in the anime. I suppose, since the whole reason she's portrayed as a male is because Akito's mother, Ren, was jealous of Akira's love for his daughter (which you don't find out until chapter 97).
Akito's mom sucks, end.
Everything goes down hill with Akito once it's revealed she's a female. She turns into suuuuch a wuss. I mean, it's nice to see the gentler side of her, she's much kinder, deeper, more insightful after she comes out, but geeze, like, non-stop Tohru a**-kissing.
I miss my edgy, villianous Akito.
And I think Yuki x Akito would have been cuter than Shigure x Akito.
[edit:] If I remember correctly, the only reason Akito is treated as a male in the anime (with no effeminate characteristics) is because up to.. whatever point they'd gotten to in the manga, the only time Akito was ever associated with any gender was one occasion when she spoke about herself using a male connotation.
Kind of like le - masculine, la - feminine.

Interestingly enough or shocking I was talking to a friend who had another friend spoil this lovely tidbit to him, but in a really horrible way. For some reason this kid had told him that Akito was a hermaphrodite in the manga, which prompted a long lecture to my friend about what the real facts were to fix the damage this other person caused. o.oa
If for some reason this kid transmuted the anime into the manga, I might be able to understand where they were coming from, but honestly overall -- what the crap. It's like the idea of crossdressing never occurred to them. O_o That or their Japanese skills fail really badly.

Then again, way back when, when they first released a preview of the cover of chapter 97, I thought transforming into a girl might have been part of Akito's curse.
I think in the long run I would have preferred Akito being a hermaphrodite, actually. It still stings a little right he heart re to refer to her as a girl.

Akito Sohma I think in the long run I would have preferred Akito being a hermaphrodite, actually. It still stings a little right he heart re to refer to her as a girl. I would've adored the idea of her being a hermaphrodite. The literal crook between man and woman with Akito no less would've been so... Interesting. The strong woman thing is still nice, but I have to say that I prefered her as a cunning b*****d, not b***h. (Pardon the language.)
Blah to Tohru a**-kissing. x_x I haven't read much of the more recent chapters, sadly, but geez... I don't mind Tohru, but I always hoped she wouldn't get to Akito really or not nearly as easily. (Especially in the anime. I mean, what the hell?) She'd gotten to everyone else. u_u;
BTW: :33333 It's so good to have this thread back. *repressed squeal* <3333 I've missed it so freaking much. ;-;
*currently working on Haru/Yuki rant* Any day now... >_>;;;

*currently working on Haru/Yuki rant* Any day now... >_>;;; *squeezles you whee * As wierd as this may sound, being a hermaphrodite, I think, would have been totally appropriate, I mean.. feminine body structure with no sense of feminine frailty (minus the constantly being sick) is Akito in a nut shell.
I would have even settled for Akito being a strong female, but as soon as it's revealed, it's like she completely falls apart and just cries her a** off all the time. Like I said, I can appreciate her gentler side, but it engulfs her completely once the secret it out.
And Tohru, ugh, I still don't like her, but I can stand her. One of the reasons I liked Akito so much is because it seemed as though she would never succumb to Tohru's kindness, and I never thought they'd establish as close of a relationship as they end up doing. Makes me sick.
I know I know! I missed this thread terribly. I payed mucho gold for the banners w/tip and everything, even though Mentha insisted I don't. I stressed the importance of this thread to the guild, for without this thread ::Welcome to Sohma House:: never would have come into existence.
I can't wait whee ! I've got some Machi x Yuki & Haru x Rin bitching to do.

I can't wait whee ! I've got some Machi x Yuki & Haru x Rin bitching to do. X33 Squee!! *tacklecling* It would also explain her need to feel superior- even though she shows vital signs of having more of an inferiority complex shielded by her need to be important. I would've just been so much more into it if she had only been half female. It doesn't help that I'm hopelessly picky when it comes to female characters in any anime.
She cries all of the time? Man, that's not the Akito we know and love. She'd just rip someone a new one and demand their devotion. Like my beloved friend Machiavelli said, "It is better to be feared than to be loved," and I completely agree for our dear Akito.
I like Tohru okay- at least she's not trying to get into any of the Sohma's pants or deliberately led Yuki or Kyo on. THAT would've been revolting. Although her naive nature is slightly annoying, she could've been much worse. I just don't like that she can say one paragraph and solve years of mental issues. x__x;;; And it really sucks that she and Akito are close now. Maaaan... gonk
Awww, that's so cool of you! whee It's just so awesome that this thread was revived. XD I was just debating with my friend earlier about Akito's actions. <33 Fun stuff. >:3

I think in the long run I would have preferred Akito being a hermaphrodite, actually. It still stings a little right he heart re to refer to her as a girl. I definitely think it would've been much more interesting. I'm sad to hear now that she's falling apart. Not that personally I don't believe in Tohru, but to make it *that* easy and for her to fall apart so suddenly and so *MUCH* I don't really buy. Like C Chan said, it shouldn't be that she can say one paragraph and solve years of issues. It'd actually make more sense if it was like a progression of things because that's kind of how things happen in real life too when you meet people. Maybe something bothers you for a really long time, but then you just meet one person that kind of makes you think about things in a different way, but it's not instantaneous, it's a progression through hanging out with them and little things. Like you just talk about things and maybe they say one thing that makes you think a little bit differently and you gradually get more comfortable with being around them, etc. etc. But one moment doesn't necessarily do anything by itself. It's pretty much one significant moment and then a progression of little moments that kind of "continue" and "encourage" what may have been started. The same can be said of bad influences too. Like if you had a friend who just got you to experiment with smoking once, but didn't after that, you might not necessarily become an addicted or anything. Maybe after that one time they're like "Okay, that was stupid, I don't wanna do it again either" or they have a conscience and don't want to pressure you to do it. But if you have a friend who repeatedly does things that aren't really all that great, then they can really have a prolonged negative influence on you and maybe send you down the wrong track. These are probably some really horrible analogies, but I honestly can't think of something better at the moment and I'm hoping I'm getting my point across at least. XD

x___x!!!!!!!!!! Machi. Oh. Freaking. Lord. (>>;;; Save it for the thread, C chan...) I'm still dumbfounded by how much Akito changed in just a few chapters. I guess with the story wrapping up and Natsuki Takaya feeling the need to give everyone a happy ending, she felt obliged to do a 180 on Akito's character.
It was like, "Well, just about everyone else is paired off now, why not just throw Akito and Shigure together? And to make it work, let's have her cry all over him all the time to make her look meak and feminine.
As much as I love Akito, and as much as I love Shigure, in my opinion, Akito and Shigure turned out to be one of the tackiest couples in Furuba. Akito x Yuki or even Akito x Kureno would have seemed more appropriate to me. Still, my ideal ending would have been Akito standing tall all by her lonesome, maybe finding some peace of mind. *sigh* Breaks my heart.
I'm not sure if I would say Akito and Tohru are close.. more like they have an understanding of eachother now, which still isn't ok!! I don't think one could really call them friends. Thank buddha. It was more of a, "Tohru.. I'm jealous of you, that's why on more than one occasion I tried to kick your a**."

XD Definetely :C Akito’s much too complex of a character to have been disected and exploited so easily. And of all people to do it to Akito.. I’d have preferred it to be someone closer to her, like Yuki, or Kureno, Shigure, or even Hatori.
I can understand Tohru maybe giving Akito a new outlook on life, but I hate how she tried to relate Akito’s problems to her own experiences. I JUST CAN’T STAND IT WHEN SHE DOES THAT.
I can only imagine how frustrating that must be in a real life scenario.. for someone to say, “I understand what you’re going through,” when they haven’t the slightest idea. No wonder Akito opened up a can of whoopass on her so often. She practically insulted her to her face.
