An animal totem is a spirit guide that just happens to be an animal.
Here's how you can find out what your animal totem is:
If you have an animal that you feel a special connection too, be it real or mythical, then you have already chosen or it has chosen you.
If you don't have a special connection with any animal, then this is what you do:
Before going to bed, write the following text in a notebook or dream journal:
"Guardians of the dream world, I call you to my side.
Reveal my spirit animal, my protector and guide.
Show me the power, beauty and grace.
In the eyes of my guardian's face."
You might not find out the first night doing this, so keep the notebook by your bed for a few nights until you find out what your animal totem is. If you're wondering how you'll know if that animal is your animal totem, you'll just know. Keep in mind that you should be patient, it won't work as quickly for some people as it will for others.

Here's my experience with this....
About a month or 2 ago, I wrote those words in my dream journal and placed my journal right next to my pillow. I had some very strange animal themed dreams while I had the notebook there. The first dream I had was the one that revealed my animal totem.
I don't really remember much of the dream as it was so long ago, but I'll give you the stuff I remember. At the very beginning I remember there was a fluffly, white house cat in my front yard. This cat has been in my dreams before. Later in the dream, I could see everyone's animal totems. When I was looking for mine, the animal that I was looking for was a white tiger.
So, it is to my belief that my animal totem is either a white tiger or just a plain white house cat. Before doing this, I had a feeling that my animal totem would either be a white tiger, leopard, or a wolf (those are my most favorite animals).
I left the notebook on my bed the next night to see what would happen... that was probably the strangest dream I've ever had. My brother, my dog, and I were being chased through this zoo type place that had all these obstacles in it that we had to go through (they were dangerous obstacles, like the kinds in games and whatnot). The first animals I remember seeing were the tigers, although I don't remember to much of the beginning. In one of the other cages, there were 2 abnormally large, talking hippos who kept ramming their heads into the wall. That dream really had no significance, just thought I'd share it.

Eriara my animal is a reddish-gold wolf with huge red eagle wings. He shows up in my dreams all the time. He sounds pretty. I don't think I mentioned that my tiger has wings. I'm not really sure what type of wings though except for that they're white.

One of mine is the Dragonfly. They seem to follow me everywhere. I don't mean just one or two. I mean like 5 or more. They always fly around me whenever I go out. One day I bought a grab bag and in this garb bag was a dragonfly charm.

I've tried meditating, and that hasn't worked >_>;; So I guess I'll start doing this now ^^; Thanks! I've heard that you could find out by meditating... it just seems a bit complicated to me. I have a hard time meditating if there are a bunch of steps and stuff that I have to remember.

Although, when I did it the first two nights I went without rewriting it and had dreams of animals both of those nights and then the third night there weren't any animals in my dream so the night after that I rewrote it and there were animals in my dream again. So if you stop having dreams about animals or if it's been a few days since writing it and you still haven't any dreams about animals, then I would say to rewrite it. You will know what your animal totem is when you and your animal totem are ready for you to know. Just be patient.
