I can't remember the name of the other actor that they were thinking of using but ofcourse
Johnny's amahzingg ability to take on ANY obscure role landed him the part.
The production of Shantaram, which was the movie Johnny was filming, fell through.
The director walked away or something.
So our favourite director Tim Burton((yay)) called up Johnny and he said of course!
AND THEY WON'T BE DUBBING HIS VOICE!!!!
So we get to hear him sing!!!
YAY!!!!
I'm so excited! blaugh

If you haven't listened to the musical Sweeney Todd, I suggest you do.
'Tis an amahzingg musical.
You'll get a taste of what Johnny will be playing.
ofcourse he's playing the title role
Sweeney Todd himself.

that is very good news i must say. i have been waiting to hear him sing again! and sweeney todd will be a very intersting move for him.

What I heard it that the only reason Tim Burton picked up on Sweeny Todd was because he ran ouy of money to continue filming "Ripley's Believe it or not" with Jim Carey. But how do we know that this is already true that he's already been casted & who he's playing? And when does filming begin since their still finishing up pirates 3?

Lyhke woah Sweeney Todd is a major famous Broadway show. That has won many Tony's and has just been revived on Broadway. So, it shouldn't be to hard to find a soundtrack.  [._.] a n a c a d a b r a [._.] Moose Sex.

Tim Burton's version of the Stephen Sondheim musical thriller SWEENEY TODD, starring Johnny Depp as the notorious barber, will begin filming on February 5, 2007, DreamWorks Studio announced today. The DreamWorks-Warner Bros. co-production will film at Burton's favorite stomping grounds, Pinewood Studios in London. Two-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood will design the costumes, and Oscar-nominated cinematographer Dante Spinotti, who shot L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, will be Burton's director of photography.
According to Variety, the SWEENEY TODD producers said "rehearsals and pre-recordings will begin in November and December;" that gives Johnny only a short break after finishing PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3, which is currently shooting in southern California. DreamWorks spokesman Marvin Levy told the Associated Press that Johnny Depp "is expected to do his own singing" as Sweeney Todd.

*hugs everyone who has given information in this thread* I love Johnny Depp and I adore musicals so this is one of the most exciting things ever. The craziest and most eccentric pair in the world are going to scare the **** out of you. Be very afraid next time you go to the barber (especially if the barber is really hot), it just might be Sweeney Todd twisted

LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Johnny Depp is taking singing lessons from girlfriend Vanessa Paradis to prepare for his new film role.
The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' actor - who had to pass a singing test to land a part in musical 'Sweeney Todd' - has been rehearsing for the part with Vanessa at their family home.
The film's bosses have reportedly allowed Vanessa - who enjoyed a successful pop career in the 80s - to take charge of Johnny's vocal coaching so that he wouldn't have to leave his family in France to be trained in Los Angeles
A source told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "He is over the moon Vanessa can train him in the studio at their converted barn."
Johnny - who has reunited with director Tim Burton for the musical - will play demonic hairdresser Sweeney Todd, who butchers his customers and uses their remains as pie fillings.
Personally, I think that's very sweet that the two can work together. ^^ Can't wait for Sweeney Todd to come out! >w<
