I felt much more free teaching myself and you kinda learn what you want and you dont have to pay for lessons.

I started uot teaching myself. After a year of teaching myself and beginning to get real good, my parents had me start taking lessons to learn the proper way of picking and what not.

I've taught myself, but sometimes when I'm jammin with a friend or a family friend, I ask for a nice soundin riff or two...no shame in either, though.

I'm self taught, and I've become better faster than my friends who took lessons, so i think teaching yourself is good, but i think having some lessons to get rid of some bad habits would be good too.

I'm self taught, I got down all of the basic things, along with the more advanced things, though I'm going to take up lessons as soon as school starts.

Well, from what I've seen. It seems to be great to mentor each other. Say, one of your friends is really good at thrasing, but you have more of a rythm style. You can learn from each other and build on what each of you know.
Back on topic. I took lessons for about a year, but I found that my teacher would end 5 minutes early and it wasn't really worth the money to not pay for the whole time. I've been on my own and, but I have to admit it's been slow.

I've been on my own since beginning. Besides my step-dad showing me how to play songs. I taught myself to read tabs, hammer, pull-off, tap, some scale work, and though I haven't advance as fast as my friends who take lessons, I had more fun learning. I don't want lessons. They teach you the "right" way to do things. I prefer MY way of playing.

I think a good teacher is the way to go. I had one for a bit, and stopped going. I progressed a lot more in the time that he taught me. I know I could have gotten much better if I'd practiced more, but I didn't.
Really, the key to getting better is to practice. Your friends are better not because of having a teacher or not, but because they played their a** off. As long as you continue to challenge yourself or be challenged by a teacher, you'll get better. A teacher that is good will just show you the best way of doing things.

i would love to have the time to take lessons. my practice is very unstructured and i tend to jump from concept to concept and forget about what i was working on before. i would like to find an open minded teacher to help keep me on track but let the track lead where i want it to.

I have lessons, which are good for working on technique and stuff, but I've taught myself how to play chords. Having a teacher is good for if you want to be able to play well, but teaching yourself is more fun.

yeah... I taught myself and got some tips from dancing with myself and what not. I don't disapprove of getting a teacher but sometimes they can be a waste of time (No offense to teachers)

Eh, a do a bit of both. I teach myself a lot, but I get teaching from this really great guitarist every week for an hour. It also helps that I'm his only student and it's done on the side for him, no other people to worry about.
