I'm not sure what you mean, hun. neutral

Asking someone what being black is about is like asking any other person what it's like to be themselves. You'll get as many different responses as there are people on the planet who are capable of talking...

Everyone has had different experiences in their lives. There's no set way for people to live their lives.

Making a topic asking a question like that is like asking for a bunch of stereotypes. neutral

being black is being cut from a different stone.
a stone which makes us powerful and feared.
a stone that is constantly being attacked by white supremacists
a stone that must live on for ever !

'Being black' is basically another term for being a stereotype, in my opinion.

to most people being black is to be some gangster who listens to rap, and has 'grills'.

To me, theres a difference between being African-American and being black. Remember, this is my opinion, so it doesn't mean that its true.
African-American and black: someone from African descent living in America. They are just like all other ethnicites and don't always fit into the "black" category. Lives just like any other ethnicity in America; doesn't mean that they live like depicted on media.
black *****: a stereotype; basically living the "gangsta" or ghetto life; using racial slurrs like the n word, pimping out their cars, acting like a fool at times, this is basically how the media/society see African-Americans and now some people outside the African-American race are trying to act this way to be cool.
I hope I don't get flammed for this.
edited, I now see that the term black is only offensive by how its used, and I wasn't helping (although I still prefer African-American whee

Nah, we won't flame you, kasumi08. xd Flaming isn't allowed here in the guild. 3nodding

But I do disagree with you on your definition of "black." I've stated my definition of the term somewhere here before, but, mrgh. xd

I was born in America. This means I'm American; no "African" pre-fix necessary. People who were born in Africa who come to America can be considered African-American. Hence the necessity for the terms black and white. Afterall, you can be a black German, etc.

Black doesn't mean you're ghetto or gansta or frivolous. It just means you're of the African racial heritage, or whatever you'd like to call it. 3nodding
That's my take on things.

I used to use the term black, but then I learned of the stereotypes that came with the word and where I'm from, the term black has been dragged through the mud. I don't really like the word anymore, but to me, its more of what you mean when using black, and people I'm around use the word for ghetto meanings. I wish they didn't so I could call myself black, but theres life for ya.

"That's life," indeed. xp

I know that my mother tells me that back in the day you didn't want anybody calling you "black" for any reason where she was growing up. So, that word has some history, and now that I look back, I guess this isn't the first time I've heard someone saying what you're saying. 3nodding

It has in the minds of many people, have turned into a style or culture, rather then a color of skin or race. Large clothes and slang, maybe just by simply taking a one letter off a word.[/color]

... tHE WHITE SUPREMACISTS have pounded on black people since since the 15oo's and we had to be half eaten for hundreds of years before we gained our human rights an' equality stuff. And still we're discriminated against and half to work twice as hard to measure up to our white counterparts.

I agree, it bothers me when people call me african american. I wouldn't mind black american, but I feel that when a white person say it, its just a politically correct turm of saying coon, or some derogetory term

But (kasumi0 cool your defenition of being african american is my definition of being black and your definition of being black is just my definition of being a ***** ( parton my french) Its just an american rape of an other culture.

Being black is to us like a white person is to them, but we have some extra tags put on us, ppl think racism has stopped but it hasn't. The othe day me and my cuz were talking to this mixed gurl black/white and her dad was black and left her with her mom when she was little, she thinks that white ppl and black ppl are equal. To be honest that isn't true. Most of the things black ppl can only make it big time in are sports and rapping, I probably wouldn't be successful in any of those. Now that is just the majority but there are some things a black person can manke it succesful in, but you rarely see them like doctors, I'm 16 and all my life I have never had a black doctor.

I disagree. IMO, Sure we're all equal, in some aspects, not all though. but The issue with rapping and being an athlete is highly questionable. think about it man. If there where no black doctors, then wouldn't you think they would be scrambling for one due to racial discrimination in the workplace? take abacrombie, they just started hiring minorities for fear of a lawsuit. thats why in almost every job application you get you will be asked your race. so the issue about blacks in the work place cannot be true, I seen plenty of blacks be something more. Like managers, supervisers, company owners, ect ect
