They've got a transvestite, a gay & lesbian, a bisexual, and some straight people. I understand why Maureen (bisexual) was made out as the sluttiest one. It is a common misconception that bisexuality = promiscuity. Still it bothered me that they were drawing upon that stereotype...
How did you feel about how LGBTQ people were represented in the movie Rent?

I wasn't bothered by it at all. Honestly, I'm always just happy when they have Gay or Lesbian characters in a movie or whatever at all. :3 It just makes me feel less alone. -shrugs-
On another note, I'm seeing RENT next month. <3 -spazz- I'm so excited. :3

If it's not too much of a hassle would you mind giving a brief description of the movie? I haven't heard anything about it actually.

I've never seen that movie. But I've heard of it. Some people (actualy some of them don't realy class as human per se evil ) at my school have used the term "Rent boy" to describe a male prostotute, as in they rent out their... yea... so I assume that that has something to do with this movie.

I liked the stage production better...when people turn musicals into movies it loses something....in this case a couple songs, scenes, and character development (poor mark, demoted to narrator.)

I'd have to agree with Ash. The stage production is quite better. o_o I went to New York and saw it on Broadway a few months ago. It was amazing.
Oh, and the whole slutty bisexual thing didn't bother me much. I mean, as a bisexual, I don't really notice.

All of the characters in RENT are baised on sterotypes. Even the straight ones. Mark is the socialy challenged fim maker, Roger is the musician with anger problems, Mimi is the struggling drug addict, Angel is the all-knowing Drag Queen...ect... Maureen's character isn't a slut, she's just a huge flirt. She likes being the center of attention. Your basic modern prima dona.
For anyone interested in the show RENT:
Do yourself a favor. Find a way to see the stage production. be it broadway, tour, or even a bootleg. The movie version was horrible. It didn't translate from stage to screen well at ALL.

Heh, I couldn't explain it to you in any other way but maybe I'm just too hypersensative because even the gay-friendliest people I know sometimes don't understand/believe in bisexuality. emo

I haven't seen the musical yet, but I will as soon as I get a chance to. I rented the movie, watched it 4 times in as many days (and cried every single time during the funeral scene), and went out and bought it.
Um, yeah. I have the same glasses as Mark. I didn't even notice until someone pointed it out to me.

As someone who identified herself as bisexual for god knows how many years, Maureen didn't actually bug me. Then again, I'm a nymphomaniacal, sexually polygamous girl, so eh. *Shrugs* Not all bisexuals are like her, but that doesn't mean we should disclude the ones who are. Though I agree that they did stereotype a fair bit.
Also, you have to realize that this was about a bunch of bohemian people ("Bohemian: A person with artistic or literary interests who disregards conventional standards of behavior", as per dictionary.reference.com), so why expect a bunch of tight-nit conformists?
Even though they took away a couple songs, scenes, and character development, I still thought the movie was good. SarahArden because even the gay-friendliest people I know sometimes don't understand/believe in bisexuality. emo "They can't like both, they have to choose whether they're gay or straight", right? Yeah, all of those sayings about "shades of grey" comes crashing down right around then. Ugh. I hate when people do that.
