Okay, so maybe this isn't exactly POPculture... but it is cultural, and I think it makes for a funny discussion.
Nattou is made of fermented soybeans... which is to say, they're rotting. Mmm, sounds great, right? They smell bad, there's a snot-like consistancy, and the actual taste is okay, but not worth the attack on your nosehairs. It's said that most Japanese in Western Japan dislike it, where most Eastern Japanese love it, but I live in the south-western part, and most everyone eats it. Almost all my friends love it, with only a few exceptions of folks who say they don't. And they said that I wouldn't be able to eat it, pretty much because "I'm not Japanese." So you know what? I tried it.
Their expression = eek My expression = whee
So, have you tried Nattou? Do you have a funny Nattou story? Or even just a funny "gaijin" story? Please share!

I had natto once at a dinner party in Japan I went to! gonk
It was at the end! I opened it and I was completely shocked by the taste. Then I had to take it out of my mouth with a tissue. It was so, so so bad.
But that's just my pref. Funny night though, everyone was watching to see my expression. Not so good. gonk

My Japanese teacher is EVIL and made us try several Japanese foods plain:
nattou, umeboshi, takuan, wasabi, miso, etc... The only good thing was grene tea pocky! gonk Though I did like the takuan.
The nattou was okay. I wouldn't want to eat it every day. But am I wrong or is nattou often eaten with umeboshi? I had just the smallest bit of umeboshi and I was gagging. But my sensei (she is from Hokkaidou) popped the whole thing in her mouth one-two-three! I mean, I really only had an itty-bitty bit and I was dying! crying I guess it really is an acquired taste.

Um...what IS miso? I've heard of it a lot...and it seems to be really flexible in what you can put it in, but I never actually figured out what it was.

Erg. We should think up a new synonym for 'paste'. The word 'paste' itself is rather unappetizing, while the food in question may actually be good.
I'm going to call it...mush. Or maybe googallysmushstuff.

Oh my gosh. I tried miso soup today and it was AWFUL. It was more than an hour ago already, but I can still sort of sense the taste in my mouth and I cringe every time. The only time that a taste lasted this long was a few years ago when I tried a vomit-flavored Bertie Bott's Jellybeans. That...lasted for weeks.
Mum says she likes miso but not miso soup. How different are they?
