Since i've taken to listening to them a lot as of late so I though what the hell i'll make a topic.
So Nightwish is a finnish Metal band. They fit the definition of gothic metal quite well but have been credited as a main developer of symphonic(or orchestral) metal.
To date they have released 5 albums Angels fall first, Oceanborn, Wishmaster, Century Child, and Once. It's hard to choose but i'd have to go with Wishmaster partly because thats the CD that got me into the band.
Also my favorite song would have to be The Kinslayer, Crownless, or Over the hills and far away.(it's so hard to choose just one)
So let the discussion being!(if you noticed i provided a little more info then I usualy do. I'll try and make more detailed band topics from now on)

Pssh, Nightwish = power metal Symphonic backing and female vocals isn't all that makes gothic metal, compare them to some power metal band like Pyramaze and you get alot more similarity.
Anyway, I love Nightwish. They were one of my first real metal bands. Favourite album: Oceanborn Favourite song: The Pharoah Sets Sail To Orion
Watch this thread turn into a discussion of Tarja's departure. xd

Watch this thread turn into a discussion of Tarja's departure. xd Your right thats not all that makes gothic metal but as I said there more symphonic metal. Which is characterized by it's full orchestras, opera themes, vocals or keyboarding akin to that of opera or symphony music which Nightwish has all of. They do have quite a few of the elements of power metal such as the fantasy themes, and melodic lead guitar but I would say Symphonic metal fits them a lot better then power metal. If people want to mention Tarja's departue they can but I really hope it doesn't end up focusing on it.

It is constantly getting borught up in their official Gaia thread, to the point of annoyance.
I'd fight points about classification, but I'm just not aggressiv enough to be bothered about it.
What about your favourite album/song/etc?

Yeah I can see it going on and on in an endless cycle(happens with a lot of things).
Since I didn't state why those are my favorites i'll do that now.
Crownless is probably my favorite song because of the high energy/pitched guitar and heavy drums. (it doesn't hurt that it reminds me of old school megaman X music either) And the solo is pretty damn cool.
Wishmaster is my favorite album partly because it's the CD that got me into nightwish and also because it ahs a lot of my favorite songs on it(the kinslayer, wanderlust, wishmaster, crownless, deep silent complete, and FantasMic).
I don't really have a favorite member their one of those bands that I never looked into past the music.

I love Crownless, it's one of my favourites, my favourite track off Wishmaster. I find Oceanborn my preferred, because it has more of the really fast tracks like Crownless. The keyboarding in The Pharoah Sets Sail To Orion is some of the best I've heard, odd because Tuomas never usually does so, it's usually more atmospheric and whatnot and doesn't take the lead.
My order: Oceanborn>Century Child>Wishmaster/Angels Fall First>Once

Yeah once is on the bottom of my list too. I haven't listened to all of their albums a lot thought so my favorite my or may not change in the next few days since i've been listening almost exclusively to nightwish. I did notic a lot of crownless esc tracks on oceanborn(which i'm listening to as i type this).
I really love it when a song (by any artist) has really good keyboarding. More bands should use keyboards to enchance their sound even if it is for atmosphere.(like nightish as you pointed out)
Have you heard the song Buckethead by Colonel Claypools Bucket of Bernie Brains? That song has some great keyboarding (as does most of their songs if I recall correctly).(sorry to go off topic)

I love the band's latest two albums: Century Child and Once. They have a much cleaner sound in those two albums than any of their previous ones. Above all: it seems Tarja learned how to control her voice in those two albums. One thing that bothered me most about the previous albums was Tarja's inability to not sound so cheesy and overdramatic.
Many people hear the name Nightwish and immediatly think of Tarja. But when you actually see that band live, you realize she didn't have nearly the energy that made up the band as all the rest of the members. Honestly, I think a new singer is going to be better for them. I can think of plenty of better female vocalists that would fit Nightwish's sound.
I do have a t-shirt from their concert in Chicago at the House of Blues. That was, by far, the best concert I've been to.

Noboru-sama Have you heard the song Buckethead by Colonel Claypools Bucket of Bernie Brains? That song has some great keyboarding (as does most of their songs if I recall correctly).(sorry to go off topic) I am in the middle of getting a nice collection of Les Claypool stuff, I'll try and hear that song as soon as possible.
Also, I listen to Tristania, though while most of their material leaves me abit wanting, I still hold Angina as one of my favourite gothic metal songs ever.
