I suppose this is a fantasy book, right? It was in my library anyhows.

I'm about a hundred pages from being finished. It's fantastic, but really drawn out. It could be said in so much less, but I suppose that would take away the point of it being a book, rather than an essay.

Opinions?

eek That's kinda odd seeing as I just finished the book last weekend.

I enjoyed it...it was done really well, but I didn't like part of the ending. I'll wait till you finish to mention what I didn't like.

You're right in that it's drawn out, and I'm sure a lot of it is the philosophy/train of thought rambles they go on. I think the hardest part about reading it was that there's so much hype in modern society, that you kept waiting for him to do something drastically, but he didn't. It was pretty obvious how in the book, the Count took the, "Oh I do want to raise an army of the undead to be sure, but I have an eternity to do so, and thus I'll take my time about it." Instead of the raise armies of vampires in one night view the movies give you.

I just finished. It was a slower ending. I felt like I had to finish, but it was hard to...

I started reading it online years ago, but I never finished it because it's hard on the eyes to do it that way. I keep meaning to finish it.

One of the books that I am reading now is by Tim Lucas called The Book of Renfield: A Gospel of Dracula. I always did like the character of Renfield in Dracula.

Some might say vampires are fantasy, so unless Fairgrass says otherwise we'll leave this in the fantasy forum.

I remember I liked it, but I read it in the 6th grade and I just graduated from high school this year so I can't remember too many specific details. I really should read it again, but I have lots of other books on my reading list so I don't know when I'll get around to it.

That was a bit redundant...

Agreed...Renfield was very interesting towards the middle...

SPOILER: (directed to Phantomette) Highlight to see

What did you think about the rather random death of Quincey Morris at the end? And on a random note, the Texan dialogue faded away suddenly...I realized that at the end, and was curious about it.

Spoiler-ish (Mercuryangel):

I didn't quite notice the fading of Quincey's dialouge, but now that I checked it I can see it. I think Quincey's death was thrown in to capture the audience after a quick, almost dull climax. In the time period it was written, heroic deaths were quite admirable too.

Hmm...I suppose so...though in a way, (spoiler)

Quincey dying still came off as more random than anything...at least that was how I felt.

As to the dialouge, while I was reading I didn't notice it...but once I looked back, particularly in Lucy's letters, I realized that, and was surprised.

It is one creepy book, and the more often I read it, the creepier it gets.

One thing you have to take into account when reading it: It's a 19th century novel. They move at a slower pace than we're used to. It's also pretty early in the development of the fantasy novel & the conventions aren't set. Some of that extra detail is there to help convince readers that this is/could be real and happening in the modern world: the newspaper clippings, for example.

One thing that puzzles me is (highlight for spoiler)How incredibly sloppy & needlessly secretive the great Doctor Van Helsing is. If he taken the trouble to tell Lucy's mother why he was surrounding her with the "heavy scented" flowers, then she wouldn't have thrown them away & Lucy might have been saved. Ditto for the gold cross, which might have gained her a peaceful death, at least. He never tells anyone why it's there until it is too late. With Mina, it's carelessness: She is sluggish & displaying all the same signs Lucy did before she died, and VH doesn't notice--no one does until it is almost too late.

Well, from a literary point of view, I think that's there to add some suspense/reason to continue the storyline...

But practically, yes his methods are rather...lacking.

Now that I am reading The Historian, which deals with the search for the historical Vlad Dracula, I feel a twinge of desire to go and read Dracula to finish sometime soon.

The only copy that I could find in my local library was a paperback with stained pages to the point of being black toward the back. I am bothered by the fact that a book, much less something considered a classic, should have been treated like that with such little respect.

My friend lent me her copy of Dracula, which was actually really beaten up and torn crying , but i managed to read it and just finished it the other day. I thought it was really good, but certainly different to modern vampire stories.
