So this started out as an Industrial thread but while browsing I found an existing one a few pages back. I was disappointed to say the least, especially since there were few response and my question wasn't really answered and I am anti-repeat threads.
I decided to recycle this and hopefully get some blood pumping in this guild.
Most of us are young. Teenagers probably. I'm a little older, I'm about to be 20 at the end of the month (I'm an "oldbie" if you will).
Now I know that when I was in high school I couldn't wait to get piercings, tattoos, and any other mod I could think up. I got a few of them. I have a few tattoos, a handful of piercings and enjoyed every minute of it.
But I grew up.
I left school, got a job, and had to be an adult.
Sure, piercings and tattoos are becoming more accepted in the workplace, but still the acceptance isn't that widespread.
You'll see a girl at Target with a stud in her nose, the cashier at McDonalds with an eyebrow ring, and someone with pink hair at Hot Topic. When was the last time you bought a car from a man with full sleeves? How about your real estate agent? Does she have a lip ring?
Nope.
Sure, you can get jobs, but can you have a career while being pierced/tattooed?
From what I've experienced, no. You can be a tattoo artist, sure. You can be a beautician and things like that. What if I want to be a teacher? A doctor?
You cannot have a good paying job and not be "normal."
It's disgusting. It's horrible. It's completely un-American.
But it's life.
Bye-bye piercings, hello scars.
Now coming to the new point of this thread, are there any of your body modifications that you regret?
For awhile I thought I regretted my first tattoo (mainly because I gained weight and it isn't as nice as when I first got it) but quickly got over it.
I'm still in love with everything!
...except for the scars on my eyebrow. They're stuck on my face and I have nothing to show for it! How I loved that piercing...
And the little bump I have on the bottom of my tongue. That's there and isn't going away.
Rather than regret, is there something you wish you could change?
Don't get me wrong, I don't regret any of it but I still see those two litte holes whenever I get my eyebrows waxed. They're hardly noticeable but I know they're there. I feel almost like a sell-out and not quite as good as my competition (I have a great job---especially considering my age) at the same time. Do those scars mean I'm not as good of a manager and make me immature? No. But I think others might notice and think that. Why does it matter? Some day you'll understand.
Like I said, how many head honchos do you see with piercings (or scars from them)?
Maybe those scars are there for memories.

well, i don't think you should regret having the eyebrow piercing just because of the scars, cuz it was worth it wasn't it? if u could go back and undo it, would u? my first one rejected and i have the scar from it, but i don't regret doing it, and if i could go back and undo it, i wouldn't.
edit: btw what was that about industrials? did u have a question?

I don't regret it. I wish I wouldn't have lost it but I don't regret it. In fact, if I can, I plan on getting it re-done. About the Industrial, I'm getting it done Friday. I've heard some say it's better to use CBRs and some say a barbell. I'm not really sure which. That's all. Curiosity. smile

Career is the biggest reason I'm not more modified. Sure I have 16 piercings now, but they're all in my ears or hidden, and I'll continue to get those. I wish I could stretch my ears large, but that's a permanent venture there that I won't go on until I have a career where it's suitable, same with tattoos (visible ones atleast). I'm still holding back on tattoos anyway because I still believe 18 is too young to get something that permanent.
Most jobs aren't going to freak out about ears unless they're big stretched lobes, so I'm not too worried. I can always get retainers or reluctantly retire them. neutral
Right now I don't think I'll have a problem because I plan on going into the science field (specifically genetics), so most likely I'll be in a lab unless I go into genetic counselling, but probably a lab.

i've heard that if you get the industrial with cbrs that they might heal at the wrong angle. i don't know if it's 100% true though, so hopefully somebody els can ask. i have an industrial and got it done with a bar, but i never asked my piercer about the 2 cbr thing. (just because i think the bar is sexy XD)
oh and how did you lose your eyebrow piercing? my first one rejected, then i got it repierced, watching it like a hawk, PRAYING it doesn't reject whee

It was constantly infected and grew keloids that would get green and full of puss. My eyebrow was great for awhile but then turned and I waited a few months and just had to take it out. It was disgusting and in plain view on my face. Not only that, it was extremely painful. I miss it. sad I even tried titanium. Nothing worked. If my job allows I want to get it redone. I'd be happy beyond words. Let's keep our fingers crossed. (and I hope your new eyebrow piercing is working out!!) I want my Industrial with a barbell too. It's just too gorgeous. heart

I have never though about a career choice affecting my spand of bod mods. Basically every job I've ever thought of or wanted, low or high, I'd be able to have atleast some Bod mods anyway. I dont regret anything though, I love the little that I have. Truthfully, I'm highly into body modification now, but I much rather wait until I about twenty before I expand and get much more. Truth be told I want to make sure it's something I'm definately into not something I'll be over in the next year.

I personally haven't really regretted anything I've done. Sure some of the questions and looks people have given me have made me question my decision, but not enough to fully regret it.
Yes, I know that there are limitations to what people allow you to have and how fully people in the work place will accept you but they still will. My boyfriend works at a hospital as a phlebotomist (someone that performs blood draws when nurses can't make them) and he has tattoos. Not full sleeves, but still enough to notice. He also has a female co-worker that is heavily tatted. So it is becoming more and more mainstream.

I guess really, it's facial piercings that leave a statement on a person. When you deal with people, they pay attention to your face (hopefully).
I had to take my nose ring out because my work wouldn't allow it. Not even a retainer. After I took it out I was a bit upset but then I kinda stopped caring. The hole is still partially there but I just stopped caring. I wouldn't be able to keep it anyways. So instead I got others I would be able to hide. But you move on I guess.

The thing is, most of us are teenagers and don't have to deal with careers yet, but when that times comes chances are we will have changed in some ways and may not even care if we have to take out our lip rings. In the long run piercings aren't really a big deal, they come and go.
There was a science guy (I don't remember what he was. I think he worked at a University) on Inked once and he had lots of tattoos

I can't imagine a lab being that strict, unless your jewelry just falls out all the time. So hopefully I can be the perfect blend of geek and freak, the modified scientist. whee

Car salesmen wear those nice suits, you'd never know if they had full sleves. Nor would their bosses. biggrin
I personally intend to be so well edjucated and so ******** GOOD at what I do (I'd like to be an educational IT specialist) that it wouldn't be worth rejecting me because of some well paterned and inoffensive ink, or a few nifty barbells.

The generation that we're serving, and the generation that's hiring us is the problem.
They're not used to the idea of piercings.
They're seen as vulgar and wrong, for the most part.
Basically: You have piercings; you're a delinquent.
Or whatnot.
So, it's pain.
Which is basically why I haven't gone against my mom and gotten pierced anyways.
Because if I ahd to take it out, I'd miss it.
Or abhor the scar.
D=
Also, if you know piercings, you can usually see the scars.
And people can b e judgemental.

Ehhhh. There have been some piercings I have questioned having, like my labret...But, it signified a time in my life and I don't regret it a bit. I have scars all over me, one more on my face isn't going to hurt me. It adds character, right? xD.
Honestly, I still don't get why piercings are still considered 'taboo' or show to some generations that your a 'delinquent'. I just don't get it. And, I really don't care how people view me. Sure, I might care when I'm looking for a job or applying to college. But, right now do I care? Nope. Will I care when I'm an adult with a job? Nope.
I for sure plan to get more facial piercings, and even if they reject or I take them out...So what? I wanted that piercing, I got it...But, I didn't know it would turn out bad, so what it there to regret?
