Well this topic came up with my friend and I. I was trying to explain how Superman isn't Clarks secret identity, it's Clark who's Superman's secret identity. Superman is Kal'el's real personality, while Clark Kent is just a "mild mannered reporter", his alter ego. So then she asks "is it's a split personality and multipule personality dissorder?" stare ... No way that it is, but I was wondering what your thoughts were... 3nodding

PS - I explained it all to her, so she understands.

Clark Kent, as has been shown in Smallville, has always struggled with who he is and what he is capable of doing. Being able to let that part of him out for the world to see is what gives Clark the ability to be "normal". He couldn't be one without the other. Being just Superman would drive him nuts. Being just Clark would do the same.

I agree with Adam ^. I think that Superman and Clark Kent need each other in order to be sane. Though i don't think Clark would complain to be normal. But i think not being able to save people WOULD drive him crazy, knowing that there was nothing he could do to prevent crime. But personality wise Clark and Superman have their differences. Clark Kent fumbles, bumbles, stutters, and does not always seem to have a lot of self confindence. While Superman is sort of like the opposite. But having a split personality, is part of what (obviously) keeps his identity a secret.

I feel that Clark and Superman are the same person. The only differance is one wears glasses and the other has a cape. Unlike other "heros" in the DCU where they share differant morally ideals, when they are thier alter egos.

^ How I feel ^

Superman doesn't turn into a different person when he becomes Clark again... it's not a different personality (Multiple Personality Dissorder) like my friend thought, he's just not being himself, acting if you will.
He's not two different people inside. He's always the same person, just acts differently with his alter ego. 3nodding

Acting or not, he still has to play two different personalities.

With the exception of Superman having powers and Clark being mortal... what differance is there in their personalities? Note going by a differant name isn't a personality trait...

I agree with chaos and lara. what is the difference between Clark and supermans personalites. I think he has the same personality weather he has the glasses or cape on.

The fact that Clark ACTS like he is clutsy, bumbly, nervous and appears to have no self confindence. Superman on the other hand is Brave, graceful, and confindent.

I would have to say no but I think that Clack is the real thing and superman is just him exersiving his powers because he was Clark Kent before he was Superman.

True he was Clark first. But when he became Superman also, he changed how he was Clark. When he is Superman, there are no facades. He can be himself. When he's not wearing that stunning red cape, however, he need to NOT be himself. I.E. a bumbling fool. xd

I think it really depends on how you look at superman. or how you read it. In the sense that people can take things totally different ways

In Smallville, it's kind of hard to tell yet because we haven't seen Clark completely emerge in his portrayal as actually being Superman. Right now he's mostly just Clark Kent, stumbling through puberty and life, farmboy-always-at-the-crime-scene lol. I think he's slowly evolving more into the confident superhero that's Superman though, which will make him realize the need to keep the two lives separate, so his enemies can't guess and hurt him through the people he loves.
In the first Superman movie though, it felt like to me that Clark wasn't completely acting clumsy and bumbling, but that he knows he is and continues to be clutzy to protect his secret. (I thought it was so funny when he saved Lois by catching the bullet and says to her that he must've fainted. ) So really, in a way it's like it's two separate personalities, but only so that Clark can protect his loved ones - they have to stay separate to throw some people off his trail. Cause really, how many people are fooled by the glasses?
