While their firestone runs clearly needed work, Othelloth was on point when it came to paying attention to Thread! He held his flame as a large clump drifted down from above, waiting for the perfect moment before letting loose! It burned up into nothing but ash, and the blue allowed himself a short bugle of triumph!

Not everyone was having such a good time of it, and Othelloth kept an eye out....

16. Things start off slow, but you manage to catch a few strands of Thread. For the most part, you realize that things seem to be a mix of quiet followed by moments of stress. You catch a solid tangle, but another few strands fall through. You find it's tricky when there are entire groups falling overhead together, and you find yourself struggling to make the right choice on what to catch. In one instance, you almost singe a wingmate by forgetting your airspace. Rookie mistake! [If you roll this 3 times, you actually find yourself burning a wingmate. Quote a weyrling and have them take -5 HP from burn damage! The counter then resets.]

Maybe that confidence was bleeding over into arrogance? They successfully caught some more bits of Thread, but as more and more continued to rain down from above.... well, they were hard-pressed not to chase them all down! Othelloth banked sharply, flaming hard, and--

Othelloth! La'hisen realized too late that they'd left their airspace, and luckily, the blue managed not to singe his sibling! With a wordless wave of apology, Othelloth dropped back to his proper position, feeling quite irked at the slip. No harm done.... this time.

T'roi had almost found his confidence again when once more he and Destrieth were tapped for a firestone run. This time he'd do better! Once again it was up to the chaotic upper levels, and as Destrieth tried to steady himself while avoiding becoming Threadscored, T'roi tossed the sack of firestone -- completely over the head of his target. Feeling his face growing hot beneath his flight helmet, he managed to successfully toss the second bag, then ordered his bronze weyrling back to their post. He knew he was going to hear it from the Weyrlingmaster already; this had done nothing to redeem him.

18. You're doing great and feeling good! Though you wind up with a few small ashburns, and you're still feeling a little anxious, nothing has gone horribly wrong. When Thread gets close, you make your move and flame it away. When you're tapped to deliver firestone, you do so with no trouble. This isn't so bad... Not at all! You're feeling good, and that's what matters. You and your dragon surely are naturals, baby! Good job! You're certain the Weyrlingmaster's have noticed your natural skill. Gain +1 XP

Ashburns and threadscore aside, Palouseth was feeling... sure of herself. Her first foray into threadfall had gained her her first scars of soon to be many, but she had done so well. She had saved many of her siblings from harm, she had done so good. To think, perhaps a touch silly of her, that he might notice her efforts was... likely misplaced, but it had her holding her head up a touch higher, turning with the breeze with a hard push of her wings.

Threadfall was almost done, and she could do this.

17. You're blooded almost immediately by a large tangle of Thread. You suppose that's why it's called a First Blooding, after all.

No sooner had T'roi and Destrieth returned to the weyrling level than a large clump of Thread blew out of nowhere and scored the bronze dragon's rear leg. It wasn't a bad score, but he still roared and immediately blinked Between to kill the pain and the Thread. "Are you alright, Des?" T'roi asked once they were back.

I am fine, getting a little tired. But the fight is nearly over! With a bugle Destrieth flamed another patch of Thread that had gotten through, as if to demonstrate that he was in fact fine. We are almost there!

Though her shoulder was aching, and her arms positively hurt, a firestone run was needed, and she was the one to answer the call. Palouseth was careful in keeping distance from the other dragon, close enough to give her rider a little bit of an advantage -- but not wanting to risk another potential collision.

But Tuelarua was able to heft the heavy bag across the distance, clenching her fist in victory as the bag was safely caught -- and with a salute of acknowledgement, the pair was back to formation -- before Tuela gave the nudge to rejoin theirs.

4. You're suddenly having a moment of panic. This is real. This is too real. You are now face-to-face with the deadly menace that has killed so many. The silver strands wind and twist and reach out for you, and you suddenly find yourself filled with doubt and worry. Can you do this? Why are you up here? What about all those that failed? How can you do this for the rest of your life -- a life that could well be cut short!?! Thankfully, while you are having a moments panic, your dragon seems to know what to do--especially when the lurch to the side and dive to flame down a few patches of Thread. While this doesn't really calm you, and you're still sweating bullets beneath that helmet, you do begin to focus more on sweeping up the Thread.

Wings beat slowly, as Palouseth charred down a falling clump of thread. Tuelarua scanned out on the horizon, but as the quiet of the later end of threadfall settled down around her -- so did the ache of stillness, of worry, of panic. She finally had a good moment to look at Palouseth's injuries, turning to look back at the deep score across her flank, the deep one settled into the meat of her wing shoulder. Nevermind the burning of Tuelarua's arm, or the ache of her leg. No, not when her beloved dragon was so hurt -- and from her own damned foolhardiness.

I chose to stay up, too. There's pure love in her tone, though there's a soul-deep exhaustion. Oh, how she desired to sleep... I love you, and you give me such strength to fight on. We kept so many of my siblings safe, we kept Pern safe for one more day. We will rest, and we will fight on.

Tears had sprung to Tuela's eyes, though she had to blink them away -- crying could be later, certainly. But the weyrling nodded, pressing herself against Palouseth's neck in a tight hug before straightening up. Almost done, and then they could go home.

15. As you're wheeling and diving and cutting through the thread, you make some impressive moves. Your dragon takes some ash damage but it's light, and a reminder to try to avoid flying directly into the burning flames. Damage -2 HP

Thankfully, throughout, you do manage to see some thread coming right at a fellow weyrling. You call out to them and save the day! My oh my, how impressive you are! Save Quote a wingmate and nullify any damage they're to take!

With Destrieth's confidence building his own, T'roi directed the bronze weyrling back into the fray. They swooped and dove like a blue as they cut a swath through the clumps of Thread that kept falling from above. At one point Destrieth flew into the hot ash of the Thread he'd just flamed -- it stung, but the damage was minimal, so minor he didn't make a sound (though the pain of being burned slightly was transmitted to T'roi through their link). T'roi noted though that the swirls of Thread were diminishing. The end was indeed in sight!

Ash was the least of their worries, though it was still a worry and not something D'rok brushed aside simply because it hurt less. While he checked on Khazariath he spotted another Weyrling in trouble and had the bronze call out.

This is horrible. Thread is a lot more potent than you expected. While it started off relatively quiet, the wind gusts so high up are a lot stronger than you expected.

If you’re a brown whose adult size is 34’ or larger or a bronze, you’ll fight against the wind but your strength and stamina allow you to pull through. You're able to play a bit of heroics and even manage to flame some Thread from one of your struggling fellows. Save Quote a wingmate and save them from damage!

They were getting fairly good at fighting the wind, D'rok pushing Khazariath through it and towards some more Thread that obviously needed some flaming - and needed to stay away from familial hide! Hmmph! Take that!

Was the end where it got better or worse? There was a lot going on and D'rok was stressing himself over taking it all in. This seemed like the place where a lot of people could start getting lax and slipping up. Especially rookies.

He was not going to make any rookie mistakes, shardit. Before he could spiral down that line of thinking, Khazariath pushed his focus to the task in front of them - where it should have been.

Right.

Dragon Injuries: Threadscore burns and holes in right wing sail, and open gash along shoulder. Large Threadscore burn along left flank. Single strand Threadscore on neck, behind where flight straps sit. All injuries have been treated with numbweed and redwort. Bitten tongue.

Rider Injuries: Scattered Threadscore patches on back where Thread managed to burrow past flight leathers. All injuries have been treated with numbweed and redwort, as well as bandaged. Minimal Threadscore on right shoulder.

Quote:
Things got heavy, fast! Thread seems to be everywhere, or at least, slipping through more than you thought it would. Is it just your location? Are other weyrlings this unlucky? Your dragon catches some, but not all, of the strands and what's worse, you wind up getting scored in the process! Thankfully, while the damage isn't major it's enough to send a shock of pain through the link. Threadscore: Take -1 Damage from Threadscore. Every time you roll this prompt, the damage goes up +1 as you and your dragon begin to exhaust themselves. Saves can nullify some or all of the damage, but the counter will continue to go up; Encouragement will reset the counter back to -1.

Niselle was a bit surprised by the amount of Thread that was still in the skies. She had thought it would taper off as the fall began to end - and she was fairly certain Threadfall was nearly over. But maybe the upper wings were finally starting to tire out, and more Thread was slipping through their wing formations.

Whatever the case may have been, she and Uvaldoth did their best to sweep up what Thread reached them, flaming it down as it fell. But there was just so much. Uvaldoth didn't have quite the spread of flame she needed to sweep it all off, and it wasn't long before a few of the strands broke through her flame to land on Niselle's shoulder.

It was enough to make her hiss in pain, sending Uvaldoth between to kill the few strands that had managed to find the gaps in her damaged leathers. It was nothing compared to the hit she'd taken earlier, but shard it, it still stung!
