The moment the gates had cracked and released all of the souls in heaven, Mtima'safi felt it. Safely guarded beyond that gate was the bulk of her domain, those precious souls Mkodi had decreed would go beyond the Haven and remain. But now, without the gate and without Death holding them there..

At the foot of the mountain where the God's Haven sat, unable to find out what happened and having already spent too much time fighting against the rush of souls fleeing Heaven, Mtima was panicking. She paced restlessly and kept looking skyward but knew better than to try again to get through the barrier that was keeping them out. What she didn't know, though, was what to do next. Her presence here was disrupting some of the souls as they escaped but the ultimate impact was negligible and she knew it. Normally invisible, many souls gathering around her had taken the form of butterflies and formed a fluttering rainbow trail behind her as she paced.

The noise, the lights, the storm, the futility.. and still, the goddess refused to leave.

Dalila'abadi had been searching, and searching for Mtima'safi, she knew in her hearts that the Goddess she would find wasn't going to exactly be her mother, but she ached so badly to see Mtima. The world was going to wrong, something was horribly wrong and it only strengthened the goddess of remembrance's need for Souls. She was just here visiting tiny cubs and the Haven hadn't felt so alien then.

There were things out there. Lights, meteors, pieces of the Haven tumbling, all experiences she'd never seen before and had no memory of and that was terrifying. The closer they came to the foot of the mountain the more fear that rose inside of her.

"Uhai," Dalila's voice was barely a whisper as she looked to him, "Are you sure she's here?" The blue goddess should know better to question her mate's sense of tracking, he was always sure. Dalila tried her best not to shake, but small ripples of fear rolled down her spine.

Uhaijizi had always been proud of his skills as a hunter. It was, after all, basically who he was. That he and Dalila had not yet been able to pinpoint exactly where her mother had gone was a sore spot for the god for a while. His only saving grace was that time flowed differently for beings who lived forever. Tracking gods was more difficult than tracking mortals but he knew he was on the right track this time. He was sure all the gods felt it when the haven was closed off, and Dali's instinct that Mtima would be found nearby was supported by Uhai's instinct.

"I'm sure," he murmured, keeping close to his mate. He wasn't much more comfortable than she was with the strange sights and sounds around them, he was on high alert.. but keeping her safe was most important, so he was steady.

The foot of the mountain wasn't exactly diverse terrain but it was suspiciously good at hiding things. On a ledge a ways ahead of them, Uhai knew they had found what they were looking for.

"There," he nodded.

She picked up the pace heading toward the ledge ahead of them, fear be damned, she had searched for Mtima, trusting her mate's instincts to find her, and they were so close. Of course the Goddess of Souls would be near the Haven, Dalila had been searching the Haven, bumping into little godlings as she went. It had been hard to bear when Uhai couldn't find the other goddess, but not unheard of - magic and energy could hide someone, but she feared more and more she wouldn't see the yellow goddess again.

"Mother?" Dalila called, perhaps a little too loudly, as she looked through the trail of butterflies, "Mtima...?"

Mtima was pacing furiously, completely oblivious to her surroundings, still trying to think of some way she could fix everything. She had to, didn't she? There was no way this was OK! She didn't even realize there were butterflies around her, never mind approaching gods, but a familiar voice calling a familiar name brought her attention back down to earth.

She stumbled to a stop and turned to find herself facing a familiar blue lioness with a sankofa on her shoulder and the rings for nyama nnwu na mawu on her legs.

The goddess blinked and took a step backwards, finally realizing something: she remembered. Her life before this one had been a blur she had barely noticed that she forgot, but with Dalila'abadi looking back at her- and Uhaijizi behind her- she knew something had changed.

"Dali," she said, looking shocked.

Uhai followed close behind Dalila but once he caught sight of the yellow goddess he held back. She was the right colors but looked so different from the Goddess of Souls that had repaired the damage done to him. The most surprising thing was the look of confused recognition on her face when she saw them.

What had happened?

She knows me.

She looked at Uhai and then continued walking forward as he held back, there was not stopping her from this moment.

Dalila knew that memories were hard, sometimes mortals and immortals alike did not remember, the balance between remembering, memory, forgetfulness was ever there, and Dalila'abadi could do her best to bring forward memories. But it so overwhelmed Dali that Mtima'safi remembered her, she remembered. It had hurt so much when Uhai did not know her from life to life, it had torn at her and felt like fire in her heart. But, Mtima knew her, she knew. That look of recognition was one Dalila could not forget even if she tried.

The yellow goddess did not have her runes, and didn't quite look the same, but she was yellow, and she was purple, she was beautiful.

"Do you still go by Mtima?" Tears ebbed at the corners of her eyes. Do you still go by mother? She didn't say it aloud, how could she, everyone viewed their rebirth differently, some never went back to old lives, others clung tightly to them.

"It's been a long time." She looked from the yellow goddess to Uhai.

Faced with a past she hadn't realized she'd forgotten and the overwhelming confusion of the present, Mtima'safi was frozen in place staring at her daughter- and then shattered when Dalila fought back tears and asked for her name.

"What happened to me?" she said aloud, not to the others but to herself. Suddenly she could remember her previous life, her children, her mates, her death.. and she had forced herself to forget? Why would she have done that, she didn't want to forget any of them!

"Dalila, I'm sorry!" Mtima cried, stumbling forward and pushing herself right into her daughter, "I died, I was killed- he had Wahabu's feathers- I didn't remember.. and now I don't know what's happening here but they're escaping! They're all getting away and I can't stop it!"

The way gods aged was strange but Mtima seemed so much younger now than she did before and it was odd watching her reach out to Dalila the way she did. It was obviously her, even when the sky above them warned them to be careful, that something terrible was happening, this was one thing that made sense.

Mtima's rambling was of interest. He couldn't make much sense of it, though, and he wasn't going to get between Dalila and her mother now that they had finally found her.. so he just watched dumbly from the side, hoping that when she calmed down, the Goddess of Souls would have answers that Remembrance and Predators didn't.
