━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Ara watched the man, her blue eyes flashing dangerously. As he explained he had been hired, she narrowed her eyes. She would have asked by whom, but there was really no need. There was only one who would benefit from her death. The King of Lorain must have found out about the arranged marriage. That alliance would give her Kingdom of Ehbon a great advantage in this war. He must have planned to stop it before it could ever happen. Hiring bandits was a clever move. If she had died, no one would have expected it was Lorain and they could continue to play out their plans in the shadows.

As Veska lowered his weapon, Ara to began to let down her guard. She gave a quick nod to him, he wouldn't last long in the star he was in anyway. However, they had both let their guard down a moment two soon. Ara didn't have time to react as the man lunged towards her with a shout. He pulled a knife out and Aravae's hand flee to the hit of her blade, but she wouldn't be fast enough. His dagger would strike her chest before she could raise her sword to block it. Only, the blow she was expecting never came. Veska steeped upfront off her. Ara's eyes widened as she watched the dagger plunge into his shoulder.

Despite the pain he must have been in, Veska reacted quickly, holding the man's arm back and ordering her to kill him. Ara blinked once, then stared at the man. The princess put on a brave face and took a deep breath. She knew she couldn't hesitate. They let their guard down once and Veska had gotten injured because of itg. They might not get off that easily if they did it again. Taking another breath she lifted her sword and quickly struck, piercing him through the heart. It was a quick death and as soon as it was over Ara looked away. She let out a long breath, one she hadn't realized she had been holding in.

She knew that she had to do it. If she hadn't both Veska and herself could have been killed. Still, she didn't want to think about it. Besides, Veska needed to be attended to right now. She quickly wiped the blood from her blade and resheathed it before walking to his side. Are placed her hand gently on his arm and looked at him. "Are you okay? What should I do?"

Veska "Knife-Ear" Lorlilia

Veska just took a moment as he felt the man slump against him, and after a few more snarls to the now dead body he pushed it off without much thought and looked to the knife in his shoulder. However Aravae was there to speak to him before he acted on his own. His gaze shifted from the dagger to her hand and then up to her face, shaking his head, waving his other hand. "Fine. Me fine." He reached and ripped the dagger out, tossing it to the side.

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes, thinking for a moment of what he could do to quickly get the wound patched up so they could keep moving. Sewing it shut would take to much time, leaving it as is would leave a trail, even if not immediately life threatening and no plants were around. Starting a fire would send a signal as well. Veska reached for a waterskin and uncorked it with one hand, splashing the water over the wound to clean it and any blood that had followed the knife on the way out. He then motioned to the creek he had stopped them at. "Fill waterskins. Me fix." He handed over the waterskin he had to Aravae. He had some of the silk he had gotten from Aravae. It would have to do.

He slipped the backpack off and quickly moved to wrap his shoulder in the expensive clothing, tying the bandage shut. Better to be used now and prevent further incursions like this than risk not being able to sell it later because of a mistake on his part. For some reason Veska felt a little remorse to be using the gentle feeling fabric on such a crude idea, but it quickly passed as survival instincts kicked in, ears now flicking rapidly and his body tense and on high alert once again. Whatever relaxed nature he had had before the creek was gone. It was once more back to being a pure survivalist, ready to kill, run, or out think anything that threatened him or the person he was now in charge of.

Ara watched as he ripped the dagger from his shoulder, flinching as he did so. She let her hand drop from his shoulder and just stared at him, unsure of what to do. Veska was quiet for a moment, seeming to be in thought. He pulled outg the waterskins, splashing the wound, before handing them to her. Aravae gave a small nod and Tom them in her hands before walking to the small stream. She looked back at him for a moment, not able to stop the guilt from filling her. He woyldn't be in thia situation if it weren't for her. Even if he had chosen to help her, it was her identity that kept getting him attacked.

Ara sighed and pushed that thought out of her mind as she dipped the first waterskin into the gurgling stream. Now what she wondered was how Lorain had discoveered the marriage her father had arranged. Her father had been very careful to keep it confidential for this vary reason. That meant there must be a spy among them at court, someone close to her or her father. Another sigh escaped her lips, what was worse was there was no way to get word to her father. Even if she managed to send a letter to her father, if there really was a st it would likely be intercepted.

A few minutes later and both the waterskins were filled. She'd pushed thoughts of Lorain and the spy from her mind. There was nothing she could do about either of them right now anyway. By the time she had returned to Veska, he was finishing wrapping his wound with the sink from her dress. "Probably not the best bandage, but I'm glad yu found a use for it." Ara watched him for a moment. She could tell his demeaner had completely changed. The more cheerful and reaxed side of him she had seen this mirning was gone. He was back to the tactical survivalist she had first met.

"Work now. Fix later." He stated, taking his waterskin from her gently as he stood up and checked his bow. It was still good, no cracks from the throw from earlier. He moved over to the one she had killed, checking over the bow and then the quiver of arrows, filling his own quiver up and taking the second bow. His hands were then quick at work to patting the man down and he drew out a small coin pouch, he jingled it and then let out a small sigh. "Same as man. Thief now." He grumbled as he tucked it away, unhappy with the thought.

He moved on from that body, repeating the same actions, he checked their bows and then grabbed the arrows and putting them into one of the three quivers. A thinner bow than the other two was selected and he handed them over to Aravae. "Know shoot? If no, learn. Me teach." He just gave a stern nod to it and then let his ears flick.

"Nature disturbed. No like. Quiet here... They no know how move.. Upset." He let out a huff after that and like a child began to raise his foot as if to stomp on the ground, pausing after he thought about it and just letting the foot rest naturally on the earthen floor again.

Ara watched as he moved from body to body, scavenging what he could. A small smile tugged at the corners of her lips as he placed the coin pouch into his pocket witch a grumble. Most people would judge Veska as a savage, but in the time Ara had spent with him, she had seen something much different. He was gentle enough to step over a trail of ants and make her do the same. He was honest enough to not want to be a thief. He had risked his life for her many times, whether he was being paid or not. He could of backed out once he realized how dangerous it was going to be, but he didn't. He k ew how to survive, and he was good at it, but he was no savage in her eyes.

When he handed her the bow she took it carefully into her hands. She notched an arrow and drew back the string with steady hands. "I'm probably not as good as you are, but I did convince my brother to teach me when I was younger." She doubted if she could notch the arrows as quickly as Veska or hit her mark quite as accurately, but she did know how, and she wasn't half bad at it. After a moment she lowered the bow back down to her side, her blue eyes returning to Veska.

He was right, it was quiet now. The birds that had been chirping and singing had stopped. The sounds of small creatures scurrying through the underbrush was also gone. The only sound left now was the gurgling stream, but even that seemed less cheerful now, somehow. Ara watched as he lifted his foot to stop about like a child, though he stopped halfway through. An amused smile spread on her lips but she didn't say anything about it. "Once it's quiet again, nature will fall back into place." She told him reassuringly. The little skirmish had scared the animals, but once they were sure it was safe, the birds would sing again and the wildlife would wander about.

Veska "Knife-Ear" Lorlilia

Veska gave a nod at her draw of the bow. "Good. Keep. Weapon yours. Good for safe fight." He brushed off his legs and motioned for her to follow. Seemed like no rest would be had at this small brook, the eyes behind the mask lingering on it a bit longer than it probably should've. His own injuries were beginning to burn but he couldn't let that stop him in escorting this woman out of the forest.

Once they were on the trail again, Veska's ears constantly twitched and his head was always on a swivel, snapping to the nearest sound, often finding itself pointed at Aravae as some small sound escaped her movement, his free hand always slightly poised to draw an arrow. There was no more gathering and no more watching for the wild life beneath his feet. There was no hesitation in his movements as he just trailed forward in his silence.

He didn't speak unless spoken to, and even then the answers were clipped... More than they already were with his barely functioning language. The travel was no longer one of pleasantries, humor, and games, at least not in the typical sense. Now it was a game of hunters and hunted, and they were the hunted. However their hunters were no apex predator in Veska's eyes. To be avoided due to the size of the pack but if he could find small groupings of them, he was going to turn this twisted game around. They had disturbed his forest and his time in his home. He had been wanting a few more years of solitude since his last visit to civilization, and instead they had disturbed the slumbering bear from its hibernation.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Ara still enjoyed being in the forest. It was something she had always wanted to do, but was never allowed to at her home. Not to say,she didn't try. She had gotten into trouble a fair amount of times trying to sneak off the palace grounds. However, it wasn't nearly as fun or as cheery now with Veska's changed deameanor. Ara wasn't bothered by it. She understood that he was on high alert, ready to protect himself, his home, and even her. Even so, in the steady silence she was becoming increasingly aware of her nisy footsteps. She wasn't use to traveling this terrain, so she codn't do it with the same silence and grave that Veska did. She often found herself snapping twigs or crumching leaves under her feet.

Veska was on a set path. He no longer gather berries and toots as he went. He had stopped pointing out the wildlife or stopping for ants on the trail. His ears twitched at every little noise, though a lot of them were coming from Aravae. She was at the point where she could either be silent, or keep up with Veska, not both. However, as they traveled she worked to quiet her steps, being careful for twigs and leaves. Ara didn't want to leave a trail or draw attention to them and get them into another sticky situation.

After traveling in silence for Aravae finally opened her mouth to speak. "Veska," She started softly. "I'm sorry I brought the guess of my people into your home." Ara had witnessed just how much he cared for the forest and knew he hated t see it disturbed by the rivalries of humans. "I knew it wouldn't be a safe journey once we neared the boxers of Lorain, but I hadn't ever thought they would go as far as to hire bandits to kill me. They wouldn't have even known I was traveling." Her mind lingered on the spy that must be lurking around court. There was still no way for her to get word to her father, not without the spy also finding out that, she knew the tryh. That would likely only further fuel Lorain's desire to kill her.

Veska "Knife-Ear" Lorlilia

Veska paused in his tracks, glancing back to her as she spoke. He just stepped over to her and put a finger to her lips. "No speak. Already done. Live now. Forget past. Live now." He knelt down next to her and motioned for her to follow, ears twitching.

He reached for a brush and gently pulled it aside to reveal a mother fox and her kits in a small root hollow. The fox looked up at them, tilting its head. Rather than trying to be vicious or protective. Veska reached to his person and offered the animal some jerky. "We animals. Live similar." The fox sniffed at the jerky and then took it into its mouth. His hand reached out and gently pet the animal behind the ears. "Wary, but trust. We know enemy now. Has face. Has body. No shadow. Can fight it. For now, we live. That fight."

He turned, offering Aravae a peace of jerky and motioning to the fox and her kits with it before offering it back to the woman. His head then turned to the fox and he let out small yipping sounds. They were quiet, but the fox let growls and small yips back out of her own. Veska then turned to Aravae and motioned for her to come closer. "Bandits here before you. Always here. Always remain. Part nature. Part animal. How works. We better. Why okay."

Blue eyes widened slightly as he pressed his finger to her lips. Her voice trailed off and she stared at him for a moment, still slightly surprised by him. After a moment though her lips twitch into a small smile beneath his finger. He keeled down and Ara followed suit when he motioned for her, watching him curiously as he spoke. It was a lot for him, especially after the long silence. She gave him a small nod. "Live now." She agreed. It was a good piece of advice. Live in the present, forget the past.

Aravae watched as he pulled some brush, revealing a mother fox and her babies nestled up in the root. She smiled as she looked upon them. The fox watched them too, nearly just as curious. She was cautious, but not viscious. Shed watched again as Veska handed the fox a piece of jerky before giving the fox a stray between the ears. He then gave her a piece of jerky to do the same. She slowly reached the her hand towards the fox, offering the jerky. Ara let her sniff and take the jerky before she reached out and stroked her fee. Afterwards she looked up at Veska with a smile on her lips.

Aravae was quiet for a moment. As Veska's words sunk in, some of the guilt she had been feeling subsided. Her gaze dropped, watching the fox for several moments as she tried to arrange her thoughts into words. "There might be one good thing that came from this." She started, her gaze meeting his once more. "If I never would have been attacked by the bandits, I never would have met you, and well... I'm really glad that I did get to meet you."

Veska gave a nod, moving to put the brush back. "Good. See good things. Always better." He then stood up very slowly, moving to offer her a hand as he looked up at the sky. "Travel short. Then stop. Rest. Continue. City Sun High tomorrow." He pointed at the sky and gave a nod before looking back at her, there was a frown hidden behind the mask. "Clothes fix. Tonight rest."

Once they were both on their feet Veska began to lead the way. His ears still twitched, but his body began to relax again, and even though he had done well to hide it for the day, a small limp from the soreness began to show in the leg that had been gashed open the previous day. He also reached up and pulled the mask away, shaking his head as he did so to push the wrappings about his head away and his breathing finally starting to get heavy, every once in a while pausing to let out a puffed up breath from his mouth.

Not even his body could resist battle fatigue, and while it still had more energy to burn, the fact that danger was not immediate meant it could tell itself when it should rest and it was begging for a rest now. For once, Veska was actually looking forward to a city. Not due to any idea that they would be safe there, far from it. For the fact that they would be able to stay at an inn and recuperate their injuries in a place that could be easily defended. It made his ears perk up slightly.

Ara took his offered hand a let him help pull her off the ground. As much as Ara loved her experiences in the forest and as much as she enjoyed being here, she too was looking forward to getting to the city. It would be good to get out of her torn, blood-stained dress and into something more suitable for travel through the woods. The prospect of rest was also an appealing prospect. Ara was much more for It than any other noble woman, especially for a princess however, her body wasn't use to their sort of travel. Her muscles were sore and tired, but she said nothing of it and pushed herself onward.

Ara followed Veska down the path. It was quiet again, but not as tense as before. His ears still fetched at the smallest of sounds, but his body seemed to relax. Not long after they continued their journey, Are noticed the small limp that had developed in Veska's step. Ara watched him for a moment, concern written in her face. "Veska, are you alright?" He hadn't when signs of his injury hurtingv him yet today, but the tussle back at the stream must have irritated the wound. Ara admired Veska's strength. Her own injury throbbed painfully here and there, always aggravated more if she used the arm, but she couldn't imagine having to make this journey with a wound like that on her leg.

As they continued to walk, other signs of Veska's exhaustion began to show. His breathing that had been so quiet up until now was beginning to sound rather labored. Ara reached out and placed her hand gently on his arm, looking up to his face, no longer hidden by the mask. "We can rest if you need to." She t old him, though she wasn't sure he would accept. He was likely anxious to get to cover, somewhere safer, before they stopped. Ara understood the importance of finding shelter, but she didn't want him to injure himself further by pushing himself too hard in the process.

Veska "Knife-Ear" Lorlilia

Veska shook his head. "Cave soon. Then rest. Reach cave. Safe. No rest here." Veska explained as he took a moment to breath. The backpack was getting heavier and rather than standing straight he had a slight hunch to help support the weight. It would be another night with no fire. The less smoke they produced the better they were for it as it would make finding them all the more difficult.

"Me fine. Tired, fine. Ara alright?" He asked, looking to her person up and down. "Travel far. Tired? Hurt?" He moved to pull the mask away from his neck while he had time to do so, moving to tie it over the sheath of the sword, almost like it was a tiny buckler meant to protect the hand that would draw the sword when it reached for the blade. The inside of the mask was somewhat visible as well, and it carried a gentle sheen, most likely sweat from it having been worn. His breathing was already beginning to recover.

Veska reached for his waterskin and took a small sip while he waited for a reply, wetting his drying throat. Best to make sure nothing was rubbed raw while he moved. The more pain prevented the further they could travel tonight, even with a goal in mind that was close. Just in case there were more bandits there. It was not particularly hidden, but it was known to be the sleeping ground of a very old creature. It had died long ago, but he knew someone or something stayed there still if the fresh bones that appeared were anything to go by. He also knew it was an apex predator within these parts, as other predator's bones littered the area as well as the bones of typically prey animals. However the strange thing was, is that he had used it before and the creature had never been there, and the inside had always looked abandoned.

Ara nodded when he explained that they wouldn't rest until they got to the cave. It made sense, the last time they tried to rest while in the open, they were attacked. Still, Ara glanced at him every so often, worry still on her face. Not only was he limping, but the wait of the bag seemed to be bearing on him the farther they walked. Ara felt guilty for not carrying more of the load. Granted, Veska had told her she wasn't to carry much until her injury was healed. Too big a load could cause her to tear the stitches and reopen the wound. "How much farther is the cave?" Ara hoped she didn't sound like she was complaining. Really she was just curious.

Her worried subsided slightly when he reassured her he was alright. His breathing even seemed to be steadying a bit now that he had removed the mask. When he asked if she was alright she flashed him a reasurring smile. "Yes, thanks to you I am." If it weren't for Veska she would likely be dead by now. Even if she had managed to escape the initial bandit attack, she wouldn't have survived a night in this forest alone. Between the predators that roamed it and the bandits that were hunting her, something would have gotten to her eventually. Her luck could only go so far, it would have run out at some point.

"I'm a bit tired and a bit sore." She told him after a moment. "I've never traveled this far by foot before. I don't mind though, a little rest and I'll be fine." Her wound on her shoulder stung a bit, but not enough that she thought it was worth mentioning. That was a yet another reason she would have died with out Veska. If she had managed to escape, she wouldn't have been able to treat the injury on her own. "You know, Ves, I owe you my life." Ara said, a small laugh leaving her lips.

Veska "Knife-Ear" Lorlilia

"Owe gold. Not life." Veska stated simply as he pulled himself over another root with a bit more difficulty than before. He turned, offering her a hand and then nodded his head over his shoulder. "Cave ahead. Safe. Rest soon." Veska waited until she was over before he held up an open hand, closing it and opening it two times as if to signal a number. "Owe that much." Ten gold for saving a Princess' life. "For city. More after if farther."

He stepped over a few brushes, the trees beginning to thin as they began to meet more of a hilly area, the most immediate hill had a cavern that jutted out. Around the entrance bones of several large animals sat. Including bears and dire wolves. He looked to Aravae and gave a small smile. "Safe." He then began to boldly step up towards it, his limp abating now that they were at the last stretch for the day. His feet carried him over the bones as if they were just another part of the ground, and for the most part they were.

He stepped inside the stone and his ears flicked at the sound of dripping water, a small pool was in the back, though where the water came from he didn't really know. It was good water to drink. He just moved to slip off the backpack and move further into the cave until he was roughly in the center of the out cropping, having turned a slight corner that hid the entrance from sight. He set the pack down with a sigh of relief and just moved to sit down, unbuckling the furs and laying out the pile, setting the swords up on a cave wall in an eat little row before continuing to make a comfortable sitting area. It was large enough to comfortably sit two people or one person laying down. Next was the bedroll which was laid out further from the bend so that the pile of furs came first and then the bedroll. He then began to unpack a variety of smaller things that just helped the camp be more than two places to sleep and a row of weapons. The sticks for instance were set up in a small pyramid in the center as if to emulate a fireplace and various cooking utensils laid out around it. He gave a firm nod at his handiwork to make the place more homely. "New home."

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Ara gave a small laugh at his response. It was straight forward, blunt, as per usual with Veska. "It's an expression... well, sort of." She started to explain. Ara watched as he climbed over a large root, with more difficulty than he had shown thus far. Ara was relieved that they would be arriving at the cave soon, for Veska's sake. Once he was over, he offered her a hand. Ara took it gratefully and made her way over the root before she continued to speak. "You have saved my life, many times at this point. Even though I am paying you for your services with gold. Repaying you for saving my life is not something I will truly ever be able to do." She glanced sideways at him, flashing him a small smile.

As they continued along their path, the trees began to thin. The forest began to transfer into more of a hilly area. There was a cavern jutting out a head of them. They were on the last stretch now. As they grew closer she saw that there were bones littering the ground near the entrance. Not just bones, but those of large mammals and predators. She eyed them with uncertainty, her steps faltering slightly. Veska turned turned to her and offered her a small smile, reassuring her that it was safe. She still looked a tad bit uncertain, but she trusted Veska, so she followed him into the cave anyway.

Once inside the cave, they walked all the way back and around a corner that blocked them from the entrance. It was a small space, but they would both fit. Ara watched as he unpacked their supplies, lining the swords up along the wall and laying out the furs and the Bed roll. He even made a little fireplace in the center. Once he was finished it looked much more homely than it had to begin with. "You're the only person I know who could make a damp gave feel like home."
